  • This is our third annual apple-grinding gathering of best friends. Diane and I brought over golden delicious apples that we had harvested from our tree and combined them with apples from David and Barbara’s trees and from their neighbor’s apple trees resulting in a mixture of a variety of red, yellow, large, and small apples. Mixing the apples up for each batch results in a much more interesting tasting cider. All six of us took turns feeding the apples into the grinder and turning the press to squeeze the delicious cider out of the mash through a pillowcase. To lighten up the monotony of the process, Barbara prepared a delicious alcoholic drink adding Fireball Cinnamon Whiskey, Vanilla Vodka to a warm glass of fresh apple cider, then dropping in a cinnamon stick for an additional explosion of flavor.
David designed and constructed both the apple grinder and press out of oak wood, and over the last three years has made some improvements to these machines. It was a fun and delicious experience, and a wonderful way to make use of so many apples, instead of letting them fall to the ground and rot like many people do.
