The first gig was with a different bassist, and they had a dancer on stage called James Maker for that and the next one. So this is really the true debut of the Smiths as we know them!
This is the true debut of the smiths - Andy was not in their first two performances. The smiths without Andy just ain't the smiths, listen to that man rip it! God damn!!!
Andy played with them at their second gig (at Manhattan Sound in Manchester on Jan 25th 1983). It was only their first gig at The Ritz (on Oct 4th 1982) where Andy didn't play x
Great spot! Thank you! It’s hard to know why they stopped doing that together when it sounded so good? Well,I wonder If it was because Johnny simply had enough on his plate with that truly amazing live guitar performance then - fair enough 😊 it looked pretty effortless for him here though.
Because it's totally new and unique and it's the awkward English personality not to express approval unless it's been sanctioned (by the NME) but 3 songs in the crowd are getting it...
i’m literally obsessed with this - their so young and still haven’t found their groove as a band but somehow their still the best thanks sm for putting this out there 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Have to admit i never liked the band back then but years later i realised just how good this band were - and this footage is priceless - RIP Andy and thanks for the music...
Thank you so much for posting this! Incredible to see a professional recording of only their THIRD performance ever as a band with Marr on backing vocals! And the crowd didn't seem to realize they just witnessed greatness except for the handful of people who clapped, lol.
Tried getting the lyrics of this Wonderful Women. It's a completely different song. Oh, the nights are too long When I pressured along I tried, but I will never understand What do you see in her? What do you see in her? Oh, da da da da Oh, da da da da See the life that I grieve As you will hand in hand and I try, and I try, and I try But I will never understand Oh, what do you see her? Proof positive that they had the chemistry and sound right from the outset. Thanks for the upload and respect to the late Andy Rourke who was brilliant on this- their third, but his first gig with them!
Just 18 months from this, their first gig with their definitive line-up, to the “William…” single in Aug 1884, which also contained “How Soon is Now” and “Please Please Please…”. The only other major group that advanced so quickly was perhaps Led Zeppelin, but 2 of them had been session musicians for five years.
Playing great considering it’s only their 3rd performance together- but you can see Morrissey is still pretty rough round the edges in terms of his vocal style

@@muziktrkr You needed two fake ids in 1983 when you were 15, one which said you were 18 to get served in the pub and the other which said you were 13 to get you a child fare on the bus. Really pissed me off that I had to pay an adult fare when I was 14.

Joe Moss was trustworthy, it was Morrisseys insecurity/paranoia by not allowing power shift away from him but this is a trade off with true genius and like Sex Pistols short lifespan of creativity it's better to have 5 years of greatness than 40 of diminishing returns.. Blur is exception to rule and maybe because I assume each member is fairly paid.. Lesson to learn for up and coming legends.. If you have a great band don't shit on your rhythm section because they are your foundation even if they don't write words or melody...

No one talking about Johnny Marr doing backing vocals?! 8:50
Unbelievable, this might be the only video in which we see him do that with The Smiths...
Also at 4:40 and also sans shades!
i know right just thinking that . and also barely any applause ...

Amazing to hear what would become iconic songs received in near silence.

Greatest band of all time
That guitar intro to “what difference does it make” gives me goosebumps
I think they sound so much better live. Really captures the essence of the band better. Also it’s crazy to see this is only their third time live!
For a "superfan" this is incredible!

They are incomplete, but somehow fully realised. The vision was there, even if they were still rough around the edges.
2nd song in is a groove the rolling stones would kill for!!!

Thank Yah for declaring how you were "Brought Into The Light" & Thank you ABSOLUTELY FABULOUSLY for adding that sweet RIP for Andy at the end...

I can’t believe this is the Smiths live and just one person is clapping 😁 That soon changed.
This recording of “Handsome Devil” was on the b-side of “Hand in Glove” two month’s later.
Saw them at Portsmouth Poly later that year, thanks for the memories
