An introduction to the generator project.

  • Welcome to one of the biggest projects I have ever had, well, heaviest at least!. this thing is a monster of a generator for a hobbyist, probably weighs 2.5 metric tonnes, and it needs a lot of work.
    Sadly it looks like a winding is burnt out, at first I though the errant reading was damaged or shorted wiring in the cabinet, but one armature winding is toast, but it may still output 2 phases that we can use. if not, I will keep the skid, engine and radiator, the rest can be scrapped.

    Great to see that you picked it up! Depending on how adventurous you feel, you might be able to find the shorted winding, pop the shorted turn apart, and re-lacquer it.

    • @Aussie50
      @Aussie50  5 лет назад +1

      Unfortunatly it looks like the entire armature winding is torched, even has a 1/4" hole blown in it at one point. it might pose a problem if I want to run 2 of the phases into an inverter.

    Once you get it going and have some fun with it. It would not be that hard to replace the bad wynding. Just food for thought.

    Great you got the genset safe at home. Look forward to hear it running. Try to keep the cables to the starter as short as possible, less Voltage drop and more torque for starting. I have been using Filmora editing since RUclips ditched the free editor. That works pretty good and costs $57 a year.

    • @thingyee1118
      @thingyee1118 5 лет назад +2

      RODALCO2007 tried the free Kdenlive?

    • @Aussie50
      @Aussie50  5 лет назад +2

      $57 a year is much more reasonable than Adobe suite that I hardly use. the battery cables are double the gauge of the old ones but that is a good point, I will shorten them when I build a battery box for it, after its mobile that is.

    • @RODALCO2007
      @RODALCO2007 5 лет назад +2

      I think there is also an unlimited option for $85 and no expiry date, I tried for 1 year and am very happy with it. It takes all formats and very user friendly. Shorter starter cables are always the best option. Any extra milli Ohms wasted in cable losses will reduce torque at the starter motor.

      @TradieTrev 5 лет назад +3

      Sent a small 70's electric chainsaw motor away years ago to the rewinder, that was worth a couple hundred then so I could only imagine how much it'll cost now for decent 3 phase number.

      That's the trouble around where I am, machine tools show up, but they are often things that you couldn't fit even in a large home shop. Things like industrial lathes that are 10'' or more between the chuck and the tail stock, or milling machines that are 15'' tall, giant drill presses, etc. . There were a number of machine shops that repaired logging equipment, or stuff for pulp mills, and they needed huge, expensive tools to do it.

    Id still recommend giving it a crack though as at first glance, it appears to be fairly powerful.

    • @boelwerkr
      @boelwerkr 5 лет назад

      No every diesel engine can have a run away. It's because they are self igniting.
      Put in fuel and air and it will run. With no load it will rev up until the crank, piston or cylinder head breaks.
      Turbo diesel can and will rev higher before breaking because the turbo reduces the need of long strokes and heavy moving parts for the compression. A high revving compressor will create extreme high pressures. I've seen cylinder head parts blown trough a hood 10 meters in the air once.
      Old diesel will often blow the head gasket before blowing up completely.

  • @Sixta16

    2 phases are useless. Have the generator rewound professionally. Should not be as expensive.
