    As a doctor, every time there's a Keeps sponsorship, I feel obligated to tell men to not overpay for their services. Just ask your physician for Finasteride 5mg (one quarter of a pill daily). It's what Keeps would prescribe you, but you're going to pay cents per pill instead of the ridiculous price of the 1mg pill plus their consultation fee.

      @@I_couldnt_use_ram_as_my_handle No, just ask your physician to prescribe you the pill. This way you don't have to pay Keeps' outrageous fees. They advertise their services as if they can offer something special, whereas any general practitioner can do the same.
      (Not sure if it was sarcasm, preferred to err on the side of caution.)

    As a professional translator, thank you for this acknowledgement. So many people think that merely speaking two langages is qualification enough to be a translator....

      I can see that being a stigma. Translation would require intimate knowledge of both languages in terms of grammar as well as vocabulary. I can barely keep up acceptable grammar with my one language: translators are talented!

      @@hellfrozenphoenix13In my province, you are required to do at least a Major (so 2 years of full time universality) to he allowed to call yourself a translator. And although I don't work in localization, I did take a localization class and believe me, it's hardcore!

      @@hellfrozenphoenix13 And it's not just grammar and vocabulary. You need to have a good grasp of idioms and speech patterns and other such proclivities of each language. I've seen some translations that were all technically correct, but extremely stilted because all the character got sucked out by being a literal translation.

      I'm personally bilingual, but I never got how some people can translate between languages so easily. I have a hard time doing it because my thinking "switches" depending on the language I'm talking in, which leads me to knowing words, but just not being able to translate them well. I have a lot of respect for translators out there, and really impressed by their abilities. Good work out there!

    Within a fan translation of Fire Emblem: Thracia 776, the villain Kempf sets a trap for the main hero by locking him in a fort and shooting at him with Ballistae. He needed a filler text line to talk about him locking the gate, so the translators put "In America!" This was a reference to Yu Gi Oh abridged where Bandit Keith would add "In America" after all of his lines. The meme stuck, and now this random villian has been stained with the American flag for as long as he lives, even after we've gotten a better fan translation.

    should've included all localizations of metal gear solid save for the english one.
    they were all so bad that hideo kojima decided to just stick with japanese and english from then on, the german one for example has plenty of grammatical errors and cases of "nobody talks like that" (as if someone just dumped the script into google translate except that didn't exist yet) as well voice acting that sounds like they just had random employees reading the lines instead of hiring actual voice actors.

      @@meganinten0078 May I remind you that the Deleter's identity had to be revealed in an Other M strategy guide, because they killed him off and never resolved that plotline in the game. And that the Varia suit sequence still has the same problem of completely undermining Samus as a character. And that Samus having any reaction beyond "god dammit, how" to Ridley appearing makes little to no sense. Just because Other M got a botched localization doesn't make the base story any better

      B. Saying Samus was "well-written" (she wasn't, but not the main point), doesn't do anything to dismiss the fact that she willingly entered a hostile environment without the proper protection. Or the fact that the entire visual metaphor (which are Lexicon's words, by the way) sequence using Ridley only works if you discard the fact that this is the third time he's been resurrected, his return isn't an issue of Samus being weak it's an issue of Ridley not knowing when to stay dead. Again, even if Other M didn't get a botched localization, it still would not have been a good story

    Important knowledge: For a competent translation, one always translates TO their native language. Even if you are great at it, a little bit of Zero Wing may always happen if you do it the other way around.

      to be fair there are people out there whose second/third/etc languages are at a near-native level, which i think would be good for translation too. english is my second language, and i dont think i would have too much trouble translating something from my first language to english, and have it sound reasonable

      @@Alias_Anybody Depends of the languages, I have done some translation work about scientific texts, from My native language to English, and that is simpler than the other way around, English is kinda dumb but simple, spanish is much better for many, many things but so damn complicated. I could translate an entire novel with no Big issues from spanish to English, the opposite would not be that different but I would have to take much longer for the proof reading.

    Yu-Gi-Oh! Legacy of the Duelist is also a sight to behold in German. The game's text was obviously translated from English and it reads like a machine translation that has no idea about idioms or where to put commas. Sentences also tend to not make a whole lot of sense or just end abruptly, but there are no spelling errors, leading to the conclusion that is feels like a bad machine-translation.

      Doom Slayer from Doom, he very rarely speaks, but instead he shows his personality through actions. Take for example the first time he has to remove a cell from a facility, Hayden is telling him how important they are and why he shouldnt mess with them while the Slayer is looking for a button, switch or something to disconnect the cell, but when he realizes theres none he just decides to rip it off.

    I've recently played three games where the spanish translation drove me up a wall. The most recent was SMT Nocturne, which is generally fine except for certain in universe terms translated with the wrong definition of the english word, such as Hell Exhaust now referring to someone who is tired instead (despite the fact that it is Hell Biker's signature move and spits out exhaust). Next there's Ys Origins, where they mistakenly translate Boost as pushing and the names of the extra modes are incomprehensible: the Arena mode now has a name that tells me nothing about it despite most games translating it as "Coliseo" or leaving it untranslated; Speedrun mode is now just Speed mode; and Time Attack (which is made even more confusing by the existence of Speedrun mode, but it actually refers to beating bosses as fast as possible as opposed to the whole game) is translated as if Time refered to an actual entity that is literally attacking. Finally there's Shantae and the Seven Sirens, which botched menus so bad that the first thing I did was go to the options menu to switch to english and never change it back.

    Persona 2 Eternal Punishment was released on the PS1 in the US, and thankfully, that translation is much better. P2 characters keep their names, but P1 characters have their Revelations names. It’s not perfect, but the story and locations are intact.

    The opening montage reminded me of Ys 8's terrible first translation, which was shocking because it was handled by people that usually do a great job of translating (NIS America), though they did go the extra mile and completely fix all the text in the game in a later update, as well as redubbing most lines. Still a mystery to me as to how that first translation happened...

      NISA is usually great, but they seem to have problems with plurals. Like they don't have the corresponding scene with the dialogue and just go with the singular because that and the plural are identical in Japanese.

      @@CarbonRollerCaco Even that wouldn't have made much sense, given her backstory. She was trained to fight solo on purpose, after all, on top of it not making sense for the styling in general. Her depiction in the Prime series makes a lot more practical sense.

    Oh gosh, that Persona 1 Music was like a brick to the face, I wasn't expecting it...
    Yeah, I was one of the people who actually played the PSP Persona 1! I actually like it a lot!
    Not enough to recommend people *play it* though, unless you like clunky dungeon crawler rpgs with weird mechanics but interesting stories.

      @@Chocolatepicklesauce God, RIGHT? And then you get to the final boss and it turns out OUT OF ALL YOUR HIGHLEVEL PERSONA/CHARACTERS ONLY MARK CAN MAKE A DENT IN THE BOSS. Mark, who due to a quirk of the EXP system, is a lower level than everyone else.
      I also managed to get through the first part of the Snow Queen quest- I beat Tartarus first in that 2 hour time deadline. It was hell, but I did it.

    For "translations that changed the original material fundamentally", I'm going to throw a darkhorse vote to Fire Emblem: Three Houses for a death of a thousand cuts. The Treehouse team, for whatever reason they deemed fit, minimised much of the symbolism around Crimson Flower, flattened Claude's characterisation, and polished Dimitri up a tad. This isn't one *big* thing, just a lot of little notes.

      Yeah I've heard about a few things here and there through fan fiction of all places. Annette being threatened with being married off to someone who'd mistreat her if she didn't behave and perform well, Ionius wanting to end Adrestia's consort practice which lead up to the Insurrection of the Seven....always shocked when I hear about that, because 3H isn't egregiously bad like Fates was.

    There are two games from the same studio I remember not necessarily having a bad localization, but some slightly iffy word choices. Beyond Good And Evil and Rayman Raving Rabbids, both games developed and released by Ubisoft Montpellier, were on the whole, translated pretty well into English. The one thing that sticks out in my mind, though, is that in some cases the games were tripped up by synonyms.
    In the menus of both games, for instance, the X button (going off of the PS2 releases in both instances) was not the 'confirm' button, it was the 'validate' button. Additionally, if spotted by the Alpha Section troops in Beyond Good And Evil, when they deployed the gatling laser onto your last known location, such a request was 'accorded' rather than 'granted' or 'acknowledged' (my guess is the original French was d'accord, meaning OK). You can still glean the intended meaning, but it does make for some mild head-scratching the first time you see or hear them.

    gotta shoutout Fire Emblem Radiant Dawn because for some reason the localisation team decided to translate ONLY the super barebones "easy mode" script meant for people new to story driven games meaning we missed out on the actual script which had a lot more interesting character stuff.

    Zero Wing's English localization is so famous it named at least two tropes on the site TV Tropes. Somebody Set Us Up The Bomb and of course All Your Base Are Belong To Us.
    Top 5 Games With Amazing Localization. Zero Wing is disqualified due to it being terrible no matter how entertaining it is.

    Megaman Battle Network 4 is a standout miss on this list... that game is one of the best selling games on the GBA and has a localization that is just the absolute worst. Spelling errors, typos (Leg's go, Megaman) and poor word choices mar the game.. just as much as the poor choices made in developing the game do.

    I always took Samus in Metroid Other M as an accurate portrayal of the ultimate badass brought to their knees by the one thing they thought they escaped.
    Their own past.
    Adam showed this off by having Samus be a lot more of a soldier than a bounty hunter, bringing her down to a more humble skillset in a believable way.
    The infamous Ridley freeze up?
    That was the FIRST time she had seen Ridley in that exact form since she was a child when he and the Space Pirates first attacked her home colony. So she was literally STARING into the very REASON she was the badass she is, in the form that utterly TERRIFIED her, and SCARRED her for LIFE.
    No, not temporarily.
    SHE NEVER GOT OVER IT.

      "That was the FIRST time she had seen Ridley in that exact form since she was a child" not even close. The first time she saw Ridley after her childhood was the first time she went back to Zebes in Metroid 1/Zero Mission. Then she fought him several more times over the Prime Trilogy, and AGAIN on Zebes in Super. In terms of actual boss fights, this is like Ridley's 6th appearance. And Ridley showing up in Samus Returns retroactively makes Other M even worse. Even if we only count "that exact form", this is still the third time she's seen Ridley.

      @@jedimasterpickle3 I think Sakamoto had a vendetta against the Prime games or some shit. Foreign-made? Even though Metroid before them was already deliberately Western-flavored? That could explain all the Japanesesque imagery. Maybe he was some xenophobe trying hard to market the series to Japan. Shiro Maekawa did similar shit when writing for 2000s Sonic.
      Then again, that "exact form" of Ridley could've been what was necessary to set off Samus's PTSD as it specifically was associated with the most terrifying moment of her life. Too bad MOM's story as a whole was done so pretentiously and implausibly even if the base elements are sound.

    As a video game translator I admire the respect for the usually thankless craft in this video. If you see a bad localisation of a game, I can guarantee you it's because either:
    - There wasn't enough time
    - There wasn't enough money
    - There wasn't enough communication between the devs and the translators
    - All of the above

      Not necessarily. Sometimes scriptwriters deliberately punch up the translation with slang and/or humor, and that has a lot of opportunity to go wrong. And, of course, there's localization that alters the script to "shield the natives" from "naughty" foreign references. In both cases, the original creators and/or marketers can agree with it or not.

    Yep, I already knew that game on the thumbnail would land a spot on this list lol. It’s turning a game with an already pretty weak script into a terrible one due to piss-poor localization.
    And even if I still overall enjoyed it, FE Fates has a pretty weak localization overall due to changing plenty of the support dialogue or even the characters’s whole personalities. Of course, Fates already has plenty of writing issues even in the OG script, but I still believe it had some really great characters, so it’s a shame Nintendo Treehouse had to dumb them down for zero reasons.

    honorary mention should go to the gba version of tales of phantasia which is already vastly inferior to the other versions of the game, but the english translation takes it up with such iconic lines as "it is known to us as kangaroo" where the original line is "it is known to us as the ragnarok war." we also have bad voice acting which is EVEN FUNNIER with the audio compression of the gba

    the original FFVII english translation had a lot of issues. The plot was considered too complex and they believed that English speaking gamers would be that invested. A lot of plot points are altered/ simplified/ not thoroughly explained. I’ll hold back from details to avoid any spoilers for the new games, but the changes are rather significant and can be easily googled. Also there’s lots of fun goofs like the famous “This guy are sick”.

    Suikoden 2 definitely deserves an honorable mention, what with it's very frequent spelling and grammar mistakes, mispelling of item names such as the Circlet being called the Circuret, and Stallion's unique rune being called True Holy, implying that he somehow got a true rune when that's definitely not the case.

    At first I was confused when I saw Tales of Berseria in the opening montage but then I remembered how weirdly inconsistent that game's script could get, where what's being said doesn't at all match up with what's being written.

    Thank you for at least keeping like a slight reference to Treehouse's butchering of Fire Emblem Fates with the music at the start. The Japanese version is like a 6/10 but Treehouse managed to turn it into a 4. Wonder if that's why the teams started working closer for Three Houses to avoid a repeat. (Even if 3H has its own problems, but it wasn't Fates levels of bad.)

    I would say the Sonic adventure 1 and 2 are great examples of terrible localizations. I just recently watched the cutscenes for the games in english subtitles by a youtuber named Windii Gitlord. Long story short, the english localization butchered a lot of the dialogue and characterizations, especially in adventure 1.

      To be fair, Sonic was characterized differently in Japan vs everywhere else pre Sonic Adventure. They way some of the shows and comics made Sonic were carried over to the translation. It's all entirely due to how Sega of Japan and Sega of America didn't communicate. It's more complicated than mis-characterization

      I'd say SA1 got IMPROVED. The Japanese version had rather flat dialogue, and the English version largely either conveys the same ideas with different wording or replaces things that were already obvious from how the scene action plays out with new dialogue clarifying some bits. SA2 and Heroes, though, outright got plot points and even some jokes mangled to Hell.
      And Windii also translated the Japanese Sonic game manual stories for Sonic Retro, though they warn that such translations may be too literal to make sense in English.

      @@absollum Japan had the right lore, but too mild an attitude. America conveyed a more sardonic attitude for Sonic and his friends, but had the worse lore, though it did come up with "The" and "Robotnik" that the games adopted. I'd say the SA1 localization is a good halfway meet of personalities: sassy but also knowing when to stop joking around.

    Really teasing me with all those clips of the first Yakuza game - a localization so poor that for every future game for the next 15 years they simply didn't bother making an English dub until they decided to appeal to a new audience with a different protagonist and style of gameplay. That being said it was ballsy as hell to bring back Kiryu's original voice actor but actually give him some good voice direction this time that makes him a perfect fit for the role; a hell of a gamble that actually paid off.

      I was confused too, so I looked up 'Berseria localization' - and got reminded of just how many typos there are in various side stuff late-game. Personally, I'm not certain that's a localization problem, but SOMETHING definitely went wrong.

    Sad Megaman Battle Network 4 wasn't on here, as it fits pretty squarely with some of the other entries here, with highlights such as:
    * "There's so many electrical store!"
    * "Leg's go!"
    * "What a polite young man she was."
    * "A giant figure of an elephant in a giant elephant figure"
    * What looks like a find and replace changing every use of the singular "virus" to the plural "viruses" (e.g. Look! It's a viruses!)
    * Missing action notation so a character smiling might look like they literally say "Grin"
    * A mechanic in the final dungeon that requires you to mash A rapidly to escape; the only thing the game tells you is "Careful, Megaman!"
    * The final boss scans Megaman for evil by saying "Boo!"
    The game has other structural issues, and it's hard to tell how much of this is actually the localization's fault, but what I can say is the localization did it absolutely no favors.

    Here is a little example of bad localization.
    At the end of the King of Fighters 97, it is very common that everyone who played that game knows the New Faces Team (Yashiro, Shermie and Chris) died when they sacrificed to bring back Orochi but that is only in the western version of the game because the dialogue in the Japanese version was different.
    The New Faces Team never died, instead their souls ended up sealed with Orochi at the end of the game.
    That was the canon in Japan for many years until the current SNK staff finally accepted the canon of the western version confirming now that Yashiro, Shermie and Chris have revived.
    In other words they made a retcon in the story.
    It wouldn't be the first time SNK makes retcons like these, for example the case with K9999, a character who was erased from the canon because the actual SNK hates the poor bastard.

    Devil Kings/Sengoku Basara deserves a spot on here. I mean, aside from trying to tie it to Devil May Cry, making it significantly darker and more fantasy-based, screwing up the story/ies, changing EVERYBODY’S names, and removing almost everything related to Japanese history (because someone at Capcom was convinced that Western audiences either couldn’t appreciate Japanese history and lore, were too stupid to figure out that this was based on history, or wouldn’t like some over-the-top whacky hack-n-slash; sales numbers proved that person or persons EXTREMELY wrong and we’ve been denied most of SB ever since), the English script is just so incredibly stupid. I love this series, and I am still completely insulted that we got this condescending mess of a localization when games like Koei’s Dynasty Warriors (of which we had gotten 5 by the time DK released) and the original Samurai Warriors (which is literally the SAME time period and names!!!) had already proven that a decent number of American and European gamers had zero issues following the story or the history, kept track of the characters just fine, and weren’t bothered by the Chinese and Japanese settings and lore. Seriously, there was no excuse for that mess.

    My personal honorable mention, and I mentioned this in your poll, is Spyro. The PS1 games were god damn classics. Not only do you get to play as a dragon, but the world the dragon inhabits has some of the most convenient level designs on the PS1. Bosses aside, of course. It got even better when it wasn't just remastered, but completely remade as well. And I hope that the remake we got was the same for Japan, because I truly do feel sorry for them considering their version of the PS1 games. And in this case, I'm not talking about the dialogue; that dialogue was pretty decent, as far as I can tell. Spyro did sound pretty cute. No, what they messed up was the controls. Japanese audiences were left with a fixed camera angle akin to Silent Hill probably because they couldn't handle the dynamic cameras we got. And Spyro was not made with a fixed camera in mind, let me tell you. I cannot tell how the fixed camera angles fixed the motion sickness problem considering it still swivels and gets stuck on walls. Charging around to get through levels faster just doesn't exist since your charging speed is almost the same as just walking. There seems to be more graphical errors, and they remove some of the aesthetics by not showing Spyro landing in the levels anymore. It got so bad that the third Spyro game never released on the Japanese PS1. Spyro 2 got a release, though. And it retains many of Spyro 1's issues, only there is a dynamic camera mode this time, and they added in a dragonfly virtual pet thing. So, it fared a bit better. But I only recommend looking at Japanese Spyro 1 if you're very curious. The sad thing is that Ripto, Spyro's rival, got his name from how Spyro in Japanese looks like the word Ripto. Damn shame that's the best thing it could offer.

      Funny enough, Season of Ice actually had improvements in the Japanese version, such as the map system that would appear later in Season of Flame, and some sprite animation improvements and other graphical changes, mostly to stay consistent with the Japanese designs in Promotional material.
      The same can't be said for Spyro Orange, as it is the same as the American version details-wise, just translated to Japanese.

    I have to disagree on one case. One localization done exceptionally well with The Witcher 3. Despite being a game made in Polish, the riddle in blood and wine was translated to be wordplay in every single language. In english, you have to substitute letters. Apparently in Japanese it's a kanji pun. It's so rarely done that it highlights just how good the localization was

      Undertale. They retained and adapted a lot of the wordplay to Japanese quite well and even IMPROVED Papyrus's text by writing it vertically, matching how ancient Egyptians typically wrote hieroglyphic text as a play on the actual papyrus material.

    It was a kickstarted game, but Shenmue 3's localisation annoys the heck out of me as a long time fan. Plus, when I'm listening to Japanese dialogue, reading the English subtitles and saying "that's nothing like what was said!" its a pretty good sign of how bad the localisation/translation is. Aside from the diabolical English voice track, there are so many sentences that are mis translated that change the context of sentences to varying degrees - the end fight has a "humorous" exchange between Ryo and Ren (in English) that has a pretty different, more serious meaning in Japanese.
    Plus then you have an ending that has mistranslated dialogue and subtitles that literally makes no sense in places. Basically, the whole end of Shenmue 3 (what end wasn't cut at least) was really messy.
    Oh and shout out to Mega Man 7's USA translation that takes a pivatol ending scene (Mega Man pointing his buster at Wily, while saying NOTHING) to him pointing his buster at Wily straight up threatening to kill him. No wonder why fans are still asking for that dark "Zero kills everyone" game!
    Oh, and nice to see a couple of scenes from Yakuza 1 in the vid. I wouldn't quite say its the worst localised game out there (or even close), more of a bizarre missed opportunity with how much voice talent they had. A couple of lines actually landed better in English than the retranslation in Kiwami, to the games credit.

      MM7 English had the infamous line come after Mega Man LOWERED his Buster. That's even WORSE. I suppose, considering Wily reminds Mega Man of Isaac Asimov's First Law of Robotics, they might've been trying to make a reason for Dr. Light to create Mega Man X-to fix personality flaws in the original Mega Man by giving him a more advanced "soul"-but FFS, let the original staff handle that. That said, either version does suggest that Mega Man is so frustrated with Wily that he ends up forgetting robotic ideals when making decisions. Perhaps Light needs to install more memory in him and teach him the Zeroth Law…
      Speaking of that number, that "Zero kills everyone" thing was inspired by Zero having flashbacks in MMX4 in which he appears to have done that. It wouldn't die even if everyone knew the truth behind "Die, Wily!" or the flashback; said flashback's imagery is still strong, and it seems to be genuinely and appropriately tied to Zero's past.
      And being able to understand the REAL dialogue as it was INTENDED to be witnessed is part of why I studied Japanese to start. I'm still not perfect at hearing it, never mind reading and understanding it, but I do know some bits and nuances such that I can be better at getting the meaning in occasional spots than some high-profile translators that focus far more on raw vocabulary than how the meaning's informed by cultural appropriation.

It got bad enough at one point that I seem to recall Inafune speaking out and saying that he was never planning for that to ever happen, with classic MM being a pretty bright and breezy series that wouldn't touch on darker topics. Then again he isn't at Capcom anymore...

That sounds like a tie to MM8's Evil Energy. MM&B and onward could be interim games. Heck, MM10's Roboenza, goofy as the name sounds, could've been derived from leftover Evil Energy with the help of the donations that Wily got in MM9. I wonder if Legends 3 would've finally answered the question of where Duo and the Evil Energy robot came from.
      And if Inafune really said anything like that, it was probably knee-jerk.

    There's a LOT that had to be done for the localization of Fire Emblem Fates, much of it was for the better (upping character ages & toning down petting, etc) but the overall handling of supports is something I STILL can't get over. Sure, some questionable supports with the child characters were removed, but the supports overall are just stuck on one singular topic instead of being about 3 different scenarios like Awakening handled it. Worst is how the supports feel like 1-2 conversations stretched across 3, which gets aggravating when that one topic is the ONLY thing they talk about. Some characters do still get good supports (Charlotte, Oboro, Felicia, Niles, Arthur, the Awakening trio) but the Saizo/Beruka C-support exists, & I can't overlook that.

IF anyone's curious you can actually get it quite easily in the UK on the playstation classic mini, though it is a chore to play after Persona 4 or 5 lol

    When I hear discussion on localisation, I always think of the logistics nightmare that went into localising the second Trails in the Sky game.
    I haven't played the game (yet, I intend to once I finish Let's Playing the first), but actually getting that game out was... quite, quite challenging, and not helped by the first translation was done in a text document, when it was needed in an excel spreadsheet.
    Also, as a very long-winded JRPG... there's an awful lot of text to translate.

    HOLY TAR! I was about to comment that I had just recently replayed Breath of Fire 2 and wow the translation is pretty rough, but ultimately decided during the Persona segment that "nah, it isn't worth it to comment that".... ONLY TO HEAR THE BATTLE RIFF in the beginning of the next segment! Doesn't that just beat all? Special shoutout to BoF2's shamanizing system, where you fuse shamans to your characters for stat gain and transformations. The lady at the desk will ask you "You want me to explain how uniting works?" [Y/N].... and the 'Yes' and 'No' responses are actually reversed. So if she asks if you'd like an explanation and you say 'yes', it appears as if she ignores you and just says "Alright, lets get to work!" It's pretty great. Still an enjoyable game. Katt's adorable, Nina's adorable, and the game introduced both races and mechanics into the series that would become mainstays until the inevitable heat-death of Capcom's hatred for money resulting in "Breath of Fire 6" being a terrible Japan-only phone game.
    BoF1's translation wasn't amazing either, but nowhere near as bad as BoF2's. Still a major fan of BoF3, and hoping beyond hope Capcom will do more with the series beyond the mobile-game-hell they've thrown it into.

      Some were good, but there were a lot of shaky ones. Paula Tiso sounded too old as Camilla, EG Daily sounded super scratchy in every role she had, and Marisha Ray's voice for Effie is a disaster.
      It doesn't surprise me that they have not gone back to that same recording studio since Fates.

    Number 1: Digimon World for the PS1. It's english only legible by people that used MSN in 2006 (becuz instead of because, etc), it actually looks like it was translated by a 13 year old blonde girl talking about her love for Justin Bieber

      I actually just played it for the first time recently. II had its janky moments, but it was fun. I went to try it because of a series of videos online called “Creepy Bad Endings.”

    Another problem is, as shown in entry #4, if translation mistakes are made by people whose native language is English, it's not immediately apparent, unless someone points them out, unlike with Engrish, which is a byproduct of people who do understand the original Japanese, but not English so much.

    In the game Odin Sphere, they left the original Japanese audio intact, while using subtitles for English.
    You're playing as a princess and your father (the king) calls you "princess" when referring to you. There is a dramatic scene when instead of saying princess, he says "daughter", however, they still translated it as princess completely removing the emotional impact of the scene! Still a great game

    I'm from Germany, and Breath of Fire 2 didn't even get a German translation. We were given the English translation instead. And back then, I was at the interesting point that I knew just enough English to understand most of the games plot and dialog, but not enough to understand that a lot of the text was a bit... weird. If my English skills back then were as good as they are now, I definitely would have noticed a lot sooner just how unpolished the translation was.
    Still doesn't change the fact that, apart from the translation, it's a spectacular game with awesome characters. And I wish it would get a remastered version, maybe in HD, with improved translation this time around please.

    Not a translation, but one of the most nonsensical localization changes I've seen is that they replaced DBZ Trunks's sword with a stick in Dragon Ball Fusions. It's not that people who play that game have never seen the show or read the manga where Trunks uses a sword on numerous occasions..

      Oh, that is censorship rearing its ugly head. They didn't just remove Trunks's sword, they removed ALL of the swords from everyone who wielded them.

    I didn't know what localization was when I first played Breath of Fire 2, but when an NPC asks you if you have questions on how a process works, you pick Yes to know more and then their response is, "Great, let's start!" and your request is IGNORED, you know you're in for a treat.

      I'm assuming what's meant is "Do you _not_ have questions?". Japanese treats negatives literally and Japanese people frequently use the negatives of verbs when asking yes-or-no questions so that "Yes" is negative and "No" is positive. Japanese frowns on direct rejection because it creates an impression of disharmony, which old-fashioned Japanese strive to avoid in literally every way. Yes, it's THAT nutty.

      @@CarbonRollerCaco That's very interesting. I assumed that someone just messed it up and switched the two selections. So that's just an even bigger localization problem then switching two things around. They just did a literal translation without realizing they SHOULD switch the answers. Because if someone asks me if I have a question on something and I say YES and then I get ignored, then I'm just angry at you.

    Breath of Fire 2 is still one of the best RPGs on the SNES. Depite the god awful translation, it joins the ranks of EarthBound, Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy 6, and Mario RPG as a truly great. It just relies on its other aspects a little more.

    One thing that people don't realize is that translation from Japanese to English also requires a decent programmer(s).
    The reason?
    You can say a lot more with fewer characters using Japanese than English. And, due to how text works in most games, a lot of the time, lines have to be added to the output in order to say everything as it was in Japanese, in English.
    It's normally not as simple as just a good translation.

    You know, there's a certain game that's known to crash during a certain boss in the English version that wasn't a problem in the Japanese version. I forget what game it was, exactly, though, I think Ars Technica or something?
    I knew either it would be in this video or the comments would go crazy about it.
    That, or Final Fantasy 8 making Squall seem way more edgy and somehow even more aloof instead of a kind of "standard teen apprehension to being a miitary leader"?.
    Mostly because I've seen basically this video before, although it may have been from another channel...
    So anyway it's really weird to see neither of these in the video *or* any of the top comments.
    The *pinnacle* of bad localization, or at least translation, to me, though is...not actually that bad in terms of "ruining the localization", but still the pinnacle in the sense that it's probably the most common "weird translation" I've seen?
    So you take the fairly common sentiment of "Be careful," whatever that happens to be in Japanese, and turn it into the somehow technically correct but never used phrasing of "Have a care."
    "Have a care", not "take care", not even like "have care" like you might say "have fun", but "Have a care" like a "care" is a physical thing that you can pick up and keep in your possession.
    There was a game I played a while back, where I didn't really notice any other translation issues, but that phrase kept turning up over and over again. I'd say minimum 5 times per chapter, and the game had 5 chapters. And while I kind of understood it by context, it wasn't until like the 7th or 8th time it was used that I finally understood "oh, they were translating 'be careful.'" And ever since then I've actually noticed it turn up again in like 3-4 other games or other media sources that otherwise had no real noticeable translation issues.
