It's hard to believe that anyone thought that The Monkees weren't worthy of a book! They are so under appreciated. They contributed so much to the landscape of pop culture and music. One of the biggest insults is that they aren't in the Rock n Roll hall of fame. We fans are very grateful for pop historians like you guys!
Hi Andrew. I was a big Monkee fan back in 66 and still am. I play piano for a living and often add a healthy smattering of Monkees and Beatles at many of my gigs. Back in the 60s I could not wait to get the albums as they came out. I stumbled upon you on one of JR's excellent podcasts a few years ago and noticed your (and his) passion for the beloved band was phenomenal. Anyway I got onto your mailing list for the Day by Day "book" (tome, I think!) and just recently was notified you had printed more. When I told my girlfriend I was ordering it she HAD to disclose that she had ordered it and Micky's book for me for Xmas already! I was so excited. What amazing printing and attention to detail from you. I alredy have found several new facts from before the TV show and love the journal type approach. I have just started the "Here they Come" section. I am trying to read it very slowly ad absorbing the great photos and old ads as well. I know these labors of love are very time consuming and require painstaking attention to detail but us die-hard fans are out here. I itend to check Beatland Books for any more gems you might have. Keep up the good work. Pianoman Craig from Canada.
Glad you've cited Eric Lefcowitz's book from 1985. While it's all b/w photos, the stories, the insights and chronology were super helpful for my Monkees knowledge then.
Received my "Headquarters Mixology" booklet yesterday. It delivers as promised! I treasure my deluxe "Monkees Day by Day" since I received it during the first run. Please continue keeping The Monkees legacy alive Andrew, and inspiring others to preserve knowledge like Craig and Derek are striving to accomplish.
Thanks for this! I feel less alone - I remember wondering why Pete’s sake was on the closing credits too before it came out and thinking I would never have more than just a handful of albums. We have so much now - thanks for all of your hard work and research!
Andrew, with all the hidden gems of unreleased songs and their alternate versions, has anything ever been found on Daydream Believer? Seems the only version is the released version we know and love. Would love to hear the outtakes, mistakes etc on this. While I am aware of the longer version without horns and strings found on The Monkees 45 rpm special vinyl release which I have. Would like to know if Davy had some demo of it when he was given the song to record at the end of the Pisces sessions. Unless Davy nailed it on the first take (which seems possible) this would be the holy grail for me. Thanks for all you do for us Monkees fans out there. (Full disclosure, was there in 1966 watching on NBC as a 12 year old enraptured by the Monkees)(Fan ever since)
Thank you, thank you!! Loved them since the 60"s, and I recently found Axis TV is re running episodes. It's interesting knowing back stories and behind the scenes things!! Been back listening to the albums again. They don't make things like they used to!! (does that date me?}
Fab! There has been some discussions about the Stu Phillips incidental music from the TV show. I'd love to hear some of those recordings. Also, the incidental music from HEAD.
Hi! I appreciate the work all of you do. I was a subscriber to Maggie McManus's zine -- so well done. I recently re-read the issue packed with news of Justus, the ABC '97 special and the U.K. tour of that year. A Monkee highlight experience for me among many was the 2018 evening which Andrew hosted at The Egyptian in Hollywood (50th anniversary screening of HEAD) with Michael and Micky on stage. "Day-By-Day Story" is an epic read!
The Monkees were the best American rock/pop group due to the number of enduring great songs and good. Beach Boys close second. The Monkees were the only Americangroup to get the wild love and attention from Great Britain especially preteen/teenage girls and boys. The kids were right.. They deserve such great research as done in this book. Very few others even from the 60's. Thanks from Canada.
Andrew…do you think there will be a proper vehicle to release the unreleased Changes track Which Way Do You Want It? Would also love to hear the stereo version of Lady’s Baby. Thinking some kind of updated anthology or box set for the 60th anniversary would be a good place to sprinkle in a few of those lost/discovered gems or an expanded Missing Links box….which could include all the original ML mixes and unique Arista-era mixes, with a handful of previously unreleased mixes/tracks/etc…would love some BB&M-era backing tracks. We plant the seeds, you help make them grow…they don’t all grow, but always thankful for the bounty.
Please do more of these! I'd love to join a live streamed discussion too if that is something you'd consider. I'm very curious about what's still unreleased (outtakes from Good Times?) and if there are any possibilities to get Micky to finish off anything else from the vault? As someone who buys all the releases you guys put out, thank you and keep em coming! Looking forward to what's next.
"More recent history is less well-documented than the 1960s." Interesting point. We know an almost unbelievable amount about many of the popular music acts of the 60s, far more than the average fan had access to at the time, or for many years after. I wonder if top acts of today will ever get the same kind of research treatment in the future. Probably some will and some won't, I suppose. It is not hard to imagine well-researched books being published in the 2050s about Rihanna or Taylor Swift. But mostly I think that the young fans of today will not be quite as obsessive about their idols as many of us are about ours, particularly when it comes to matters which lie outside of the traditional gossip column topics. Finding out how these things play out is one reason to live to be old.
Great episode. I’m a Believer was the first single my older brother bought, I really got into the Monkees with the 1969 CBS reruns. I also watched the Chicago area (WGN?) weekday afternoon Monkees syndication rerun 1972-1975. Back then Monkees records were basically the Bell/Arista best of and nothing else so I would regularly record songs from the TV. There was a syndication TV mix of Daydream Believer w/o strings. Have always wanted to find that mix, does anyone know where to find it?
Will there be anymore Super Deluxe releases? We definitely need one for “Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn & Jones Ltd.” “Changes,” although unlikely, would be the icing on the cake.
Have you ever checked with Underground Vault & Storage in Hutchinson, Kansas for the 1969 airings? There are hundreds, if not thousands, of shows and movies kept there because it is completely underground and in a salt mine. Around 20 years ago when “Elvis: That’s The Way it is” was restored, many of the reels were found there. Hope this helps!
When Davy refers to "Listen to the Band" as the groups next single, at the HEAD premiere, is he referring to the Nashville recording or some edit or variation on the song as presented on 33 1/3?
Love the insight guys and thanks for all you do. Could you provide some more info on the 60s songs considered for Good Times, if vocal attempts were made etc and any more juicy details on Nez' Spanish version of Magdalena mentioned recently? I've been a fan since the MTV Marathon and the first time I ever saw The Monkees in concert (Oct 2021), your book arrived earlier that day. Quite a magical day for me!!
Terrific conversation. Hope to hear more. I have two questions I hope you could answer for me. 1.) I’ve recently grown extremely fond of the Nesmith co-written song “I’ve Never Loved Anyone More” and would love to know if perhaps a demo version exists of Nez singing the song? 2.) Do the tapes of Jack Nicholson and The Monkees ‘writing’ Head still exist? Who owns them? Nicholson? I would love to hear them, as I’m sure you all would. Thanks so much! Excited to get my hands on Andrew’s book and the Headquarters session booklet. Cheers, Dennis
Nice table-setting conversation, gents - looking forward to future editions! I'd be curious to know: (1) What is the most interesting/unexpected audio that has come to light recently, barring "Which Way Do You Want it?" (2) Have there been any leads on a better quality live 1969 recording? Further PAC&J session tapes or masters?
I bought your updated Day by Day but am passing on this one, whoever runs the Written In Our Hearts page on facebook shares all your photos (without crediting your book) so I guess I will seem them there shortly.
I'm wondering if any of you have any knowledge of a mail order company I bought from in, I think 1981 or 1982 called "Goin Back Interprises" out of Hawaii, they had one of the first Monkees extensive box sets which was who knows how many generations down.
Love these discussions. Have any.of you listened to "Podcast Valley Sunday"? Two 40 something gentlemen who discuss each monkee episode in detail and then created their own song rankings from every album. They are not historians but they do present data re character actors in each episode.

I've been on the waitlist for so long, and now I will finally get a copy of this book! Thanks for re-releasing it Andrew!
I love all of the information on the 1969 tour! I would also love to know more about the 1989 tour.
Oh my God, did I love this! It is so rare to hear a conversation on The Monkees on such a high level! Thank you so much.

I loved this conversation. I can hardly express my gratitude for your thoughtful work and research--thank you. Thank you, so much.
A great conversation. You guys need to do more of these. I always enjoy hearing Andrew's insights. Derek and Craig were delightful!
Yes, I am very interested in a book dedicated to the Monkees television series!
Fab! There has been some discussions about the Stu Phillips incidental music from the TV show. I'd love to hear some of those recordings. Also, the incidental music from HEAD.
Thanks for another great video. I first saw The Monkees on WPTT (Pittsburgh channel) in 1976.

Looking forward to the next episode. Just bought the Headquarters booklet. Let me formulate a good question...

The Kinks "Day by Day" project is of great interest and anticipation. Are there similar plans for The Bee Gees "Day by Day" from 2012?
