  • What's up, folks! I'm back with another Ace of Base reaction from the US version of their album Happy Nation (1993), and this time we listen to "Young and Proud," an AoB tune I'd never heard before. And indeed, I wondered in advance whether this would have that reggae-pop style, but it's more of a 4-on-the-floor dance-pop tune, and a quality one at that (which sort of mixes house and trance vibes). So join me for some great electronic pop from Ace of Base. Cheers!

You're very welcome! I'm enjoying reconnecting with them (I remember when they hit the scene in the '90s, but didn't end up following them closely at the time), and I know I'm just at the very beginning of the journey still. :)

You’ve gotta listen to Dancer in a Daydream from that album if you liked Young and Proud.

Their debut album basically has two different styles. The Reggae Pop they were known for and their techno/trance/Eurodance style they originated from. „Young & Proud“ was one of the songs that was very much of Ace of Base‘s early times when they were a Swedish local band called Tech Noir.

Can't wait for your reaction to "The Sign" which should be the next track.

Indeed, and that reaction was supposed to happen last night, but I ran out of time. Will be in the next batch for sure, though. Looking forward to re-connecting with that song!

By the way, there is one song that didn’t make the US Album. It’s called „Münchhausen (Just Chaos)“ and was only on the European version of the Album. It’s pretty much in their Trance/House style with a bit of Goth influences, I’d say. Maybe too obscure for the American label.

Oh, I see! I have access to the European album too, so I'll make sure we listen to that one too.

Not so true that their sound didn’t catch on, btw. Ace of Base’s blend of Eurodance, reggae and pop music helped inspire many other artists to incorporate similar sound elements into their own work. Some artists who were influenced by Ace of Base include:
Robyn: The Swedish singer-songwriter Robyn has cited Ace of Base as one of her biggest musical inspirations. She has mentioned that she was a big fan of their music growing up and that they played a part in shaping her dance-pop sound.
Katy Perry: has also been influenced by Ace of Base. She has talked about how she loves their upbeat and catchy style and how it has inspired her own music.
Lady Gaga has mentioned that she was a big fan of Ace of Base and that they were one of the groups that helped inspire her to pursue a career in music. A lot of her songs have the Ace of Base sound.
Carly Rae Jepsen: The Canadian singer-songwriter Carly Rae Jepsen has cited Ace of Base's music as an influence on her own work, particularly their catchy hooks and upbeat rhythms.
Charli XCX has mentioned Ace of Base as an inspiration for her own music, and has even covered their song "All That She Wants" live in concert.
Apart from that 90‘s Pop bands like Mr President even copied pretty much their Reggae Pop styles.

Hey there! I apologize, I meant that name you used (for their flavor of reggae) didn't catch on, though maybe I misunderstood that too. Either way, sorry that came off incorrectly, but yeah, I meant the genre name.

@@mattsnider2667 No worries. I think someone else in the comments section last time said their sound didn’t catch on. I still hear it in modern songs. But you are right, there is no actual name for it.
