Thanks for this. I've had a plumber in twice over a couple years to fix/replace my bathroom taps, and it's exorbitant in price each time. This time, I did it myself. Cost me $15 all up and no more leaking!

Definitely stronger! I have found the fix a tap brand (vandal proof tool) super flimsy, there are others that make the vandal tool that are much stronger but I found they did not fit my Caroma taps.
@@thebettlesemporium I literally bought two fix a tap kit and the spanner tips broke 😥...was a waste of money. I will lookup the 90° Circlip pliers hope it works.

Thanks for this video! Is making my life somewhat easier but how can you loosen the cone if it’s way too tight? I can’t get any grip on it to even do the first step haha
In my video how to fix a leaky shower, I have the same problem. Just use your spanner, best to use a cloth and tap around the sides, should loosen up pretty quick. Cheers for comment
I live in Adelaide and we get so much build-up from our water that I can't remove the tap head OR bonnet. It's driving me nuts. I have one of those handy tools for the handle but it's still got so much build up that I can't remove either. 😔
You may have to hacksaw it off and buy a new handle set. Not sure what your tool set is like but if you can apply some heat..If it is soap buildup it should melt....1 dollar shops often have those little bunsen burners that you fit a normal lighter into.
Same here… it’s a ‘cute’ design, but problematic. I have the same problem myself and you could minimise this issue with a bit of Vaseline on the threads but after you pull it apart 😢
@@sylviagarcia722 Ok, hopefully you have taken photo so you can see where the tool has to fit in the grooves of the screw? The screw is upside down so you will have to turn to the right not the left to undo. If you have the tool fitted properly, try turning the tap head and hold the tool in a stationary position. Good luck!
The other solution which you alluded to was turning off the water, unscrew the tap to fully open, unscrew the skirt, but don’t use conventional spanner. There are ‘slim jaw’ adjustable spanners that will minimise potential damage to the porcelain basin. Unscrew the entire tap unit which then gives better access to the stupid locking screw 😉. Gonna put my theory to test the afternoon.
Best or worst? If the plumber who installed the taps overtightened the nut then definitely the worst, the tool has very little purchase and just slips out. Thanks for the demo, at least I know it isn't reverse thread.
Vandal proof my arse!?? A vandal would just rip the whole basin out of the wall.!?? Like, WHO steals tap handles??? I've known people that never paid for toilet paper because they stole it from public toilets? I've known of people stealing copper pipe, BUT I've never heard of a TAP thief!???
This is the worst tap design I’ve ever seen. Once the tap has any age and gets a bit crusty underneath the tool just can’t handle it. Even the circlip tool will struggle and fail on particularly crusted up taps. Thanks for teaching me that these kinds of taps exist though.
You are a legend, I would never of worked out I needed that spanner, cheers from Oz
Brilliant, thanks for that, especially the shower tap tip....description whereby the tap is deep into the wall. Tap head has to be removed... Cheers.
Seems simple but I cannot get a grip with the tool - just keeps slipping out of the grooves. Taps pretty old do the screw must be stuck 😢

I used a small pair of 90° Circlip pliers, either internal or external circlip pliers work fine. 🙂🇦🇺
Thank you! The taps I have in the shower has smaller lock nuts. I have been trying to find a tool to get those out. You sir, are a legend!
I always wondered how you got this design tap apart, cheers and thanks.
Thanks. Brilliant. ! I fashioned a tool from a corn cob holder.

Great video. I have a problem I can’t remove the screw under the tap??? Don’t know what to do
I gather you have tried the secret tool? Try using your mobile phone to take a picture under the tap head. So you can see what you are dealing with.
The nut seems to not want to move the tool which you mentioned which I have used does not grip or move the screw. What do you suggest now? 🤷♀️

Love to hear how you go! If u get it off that way, might be able to drill plastic so tool fits. Goodluck.

Hey thanks for the comment, try keeping the tool stationary and turn the tap head instead.
What brand faucet is that?
Caroma
That why I couldn’t remove the tap head ,no spanner 🍻 cheers 🥂
What is that small spanner you got there
It is called a Vandal Proof Spanner.

Grab some long nose pliers and try to pull out that way...It will come, because it went in. So grab the stem of the washer with the pliers and pull.

Definitely worst invention. Too much build up to get it too work. So looking down at the tap it’s clockwise to loosen. Thanks for the video.
