- Elderly spindle gouges with little or no flute remaining can have another life. Here you see a ½" spindle gouge become a small spearpoint scraper that's good for turning small grooves and shear scraping.
Sorry to see your old friend converted to a point tool. I'll miss that stubby little spindle gouge. I just hope I'll enjoy its new role as much as I enjoyed the old.
Wow, this tool really can get a clean grove going
I've made a bowl bottom scraper similarly. Sort of like a bottom feeder gouge with no flute, it can not only scrape, but do a shear cut at a very steep angle
Really great way to repurpose an old tool. Thank you for the great idea... I think I have just the candidate in my collection.
Great tool for decorative rings in a recess or large tenon.
I made one some years ago from an old gouge that had more shaft than flute which gave me 3 equal sides. Great for rolling beads too
looks good Richard I must make one now. I have a round skew chisel that I have never used which came in a set.
Nice tool to my eye.
Looks interesting.I look forward to seeing you use it 'in action', and the alternate version too. How long did it serve you as a gouge?
Very nice tool
Never say die to an old tool Richard.
So, old gouges never die, they just get reground.🙂🙂
Thanks Richard
Thank You!
My friend, you continue to amaze me with your ingenuity.
Would you consider this a good tool to have in your arsenal? Will you use it fairly often?
Cheers!
Great idea. What is the honing device you're using? Diamond? stone?
Diamond
Great idea, Richard. It's nice to see "old friends" get back into action. I am still grieving for your faithful old shear scraper. What can you do for that one?
The old shear scraper will probably get some teeth.
@@RichardRaffanwoodturning that sounds intriguing 🤔 for threading purposes or decorative profiles?
Cool idea! It's always nice to get a little more use out of work out tools. I've made a scraper/gouge like the Turn master but with an old spindle gouge instead of flat steel and it worked pretty well, but this looks interesting. Thanks for all you do!
@@naturaIIydifferent I was thinking beads, but now I'm thinking decorative spiral as well.
@@RichardRaffanwoodturning I hope you film the process, I'd love to check it out!
Richard, what is the best way to turn Pine, Softwood?
As a general rule, slicing cuts will leave a better surface off the tool than scraping, especially open-grained soft woods.
Well the point is a little lop sided but no issue. You usually use asymmetric grinds anyway. Couldn't resist the bad joke. Nice re-purpose.
Dreadfully pointy but the what fellow wouldn't be happy with a sharp tool? Nicely done RR
