Here you go Mel..... In the 13th century the word hobby referred to a small horse or a pony. It later came to describe a toy horse - a hobbyhorse. It’s from the hobbyhorse that the word’s modern sense of “favorite pastime” evolved. A hobby is something that you do for fun - not money - and you typically do it fairly regularly.

Hobby comes from hobby horse, or a tourney horse, which was a children's toy, a horse head on a stick as it were, that a child could "ride" around on. The hobby part of the toy eventually caught in as a term for playing with your toys (get your mind out), and then the usage widened to cover activities of leisure.

In the novel Tristram Shandy, the term 'hobby-horse' was used to refer to a whimsical obsession. This eventually progressed to the term hobby being used to describe a regular activity that is done for enjoyment, usually during one's leisure time...of course, due to the ramshackle nature of the English language, there might be a few places the term came from.

I actually really like the vallejo texture paints/weathering effects paints. They work really well for basing miniatures and actually I use them a lot of times to attach a mini to the base instead of super glue. I'm not sure I would use them for a large base for like terrain. The pots are kind of small for that, but they do make large pots of texture paint, too, which could be better for larger bases. But I would use one of your tecniques if I was going to try to do a whole tabletop with texture.

You're doing a fantastic job, Mel.
Both with the terrain and in bringing the park up to an enjoyable condition. Would be wonderful if a local gaming or modeling club would join you in the effort. Been watching Flawless Cleaning for the past few months. Fantastic family and great people. They help folks to tidy up their properties, get rid of brambles or simply pressure wash the entry way. Because, as Ben says, "Kindness ripples".
One thing I learned from them is that councils over there are pretty much like the municipalities over here. Rack up them taxes, do nothing with the money. Just my 2cc of vitriol about that whole lot.
On the filler thing... I thing you had something reacting with the filler medium. Probably a thinner or medium in the washes. Or the other way around. Only time I had Vallejo go white on me was while spraying a varnish coat on a model, some twenty years ago. Turns out I had royally botched the thinning ratio.
Lichen and moss are fascinating stuff. Tying up to Ben's channel, they remove a lot of it on some videos. Moss is incredibly colorful, depending on its age. Sometimes it leaves a reddish residue in the water, others it's black. Same with lichen. A myriad of colours, up to an ash white, when baked by the sun.
    But I digress.
Keep the spirits high, mate. You deserve to be happy.
    Cheers.

Rather than using Vallejo Texture paints, I use Acryllic tile grout. If you get the white, you can use acrylic paints/ink to "dye" it to whatever color you want. Plus a jug that is 10x the size of the Vallejo stuff is $10 to $20.

Philosopher Thomas Hobbes and his son Calvin would be seen fishing, but throwing the fish back. This was strange, at the time this is how people fed themselves. When asked why he does this, Hobbes replied, "I just fish to relax and have fun, I've plenty of food at home." So activities people do for pleasure became hobbies, as opposed to jobbies(as they were known at the time).

I once bought a big jar of Vallejo dip/wash, and had the same whitening problem. Apparently, they don't like being mixed with tap water, so I started thinning them with airbrush thinner to good effect. Distilled water may work as well, but I don't remember offhand if I ever tried that.

Problems with the park authority issue could be do to corruption or something playing politics. You're in the UK? I'd contact the offices of everyone from your local council all the way up to your MP (I think that's the term for the person representing you in the commons? I live in the US so I'm not completely cognizant of how y'all have your government set up)
It's always frustrating when something turns out defective. But hey, I learned a new thing about weathering with how to apply green washes! Not that I think I'll get a chance to use that information as I'm more of a table-ready crafter lol. But listening to you talk through your methods while I'm carving bricks into foam is a good way to go.

The name derives from the word 'hobin', a French word thought to be derived from the Gaelic term 'obann', meaning 'swift. Part time light cavalry , non professional soldiers , serving as light cavalry. Irish in origin ,although popular in England also. Hobnobs , popular biscuit, from Hobnobbing ,riding with the nobility . Hobnails , the type to affix he shoes t a horse ,later for soldiers boots. Hobgoblin , a small, swift and cruel fey creature, all deriving from the term. Scottish Isles town Oban also in with the original word.
