Converting a Ford Generator to Alternator
Episode 497
We convert our tired old generator to an alternator in our 1964 Falcon. We show exactly how to wire the alternator into the existing car using a new harness we make from one of our existing wire bundles. We also show existing parts from National Parts Depot that you can use to make your own harness to convert from a Ford generator to an alternator. This is not a one wire alternator conversion because some folks do not wan to use a one wire alternator.

Us too!
When I built my 64 Ranchero I used a Painless harness with a Ford alternator. Just not enough power so I switched to a 100 amp one wire alternator. Wasn’t happy with voltage at idle. After starting the engine I had to rev the engine to over 1500 rpm to get the alternator to start charging. After reving the voltage was just ok. So 8 years ago I replaced the alternator to a 3 wire internally regulated 110 amp GM style alternator. I now have plenty on voltage at every rpm. So if you don’t care about factory correct the GM style is the way to go, plus they are available with even higher output than the one I’m using.
That the way I’m leaning on my 64 comet build. I’ll be filming for that kick off this weekend I hope.
It is a good option. But we wanted to cover the original swap to set up the next video.
Hey jeff, I had a generator on my 61 for 20 years, yes all orginal carl...but I love it and worked great....
Isn't soldering electric connections a better way?
That one wors fine but won't do the things we need it to do amperage wise.
That is one of those things like what brand of motor oil. BUT my theory is that solder can be shaken lose quicker than a butt connector.
@@AutoRestoMod I have heard that too. Supposedly it’s not used in aviation because Of that reason. But I’m no expert.
Have used a 30 amp Generator to power Halogens and Pertronix Ignitor 1 for 20 years now, so it's news to me that it won't work but I'll be sure to keep an eye on it now ;) Generators work but if you want A/C it's not gonna be enough.
Okay, there has got to be a reason you chose an external regulator. As Rickie would say, OK Lucy, you got some 'splaining to do!
This will come next week.
Best thing you can do with a generator. Toss it. Installed the 3g alternator on my 63 Falcon, not sure if you can run a v-belt with it. I’m using a serpentine setup.
You can.
Surprising that you used an externally regulated setup. The 1G alternator is a little bit smaller, but if you can fit it a 3g internally regulated would seem easier with a lot more power output. Other options would be a 1-wire but there are some downsides. Also , if you have an ammeter you might need to pull that circuit out.
We will be covering this in the next episode.
Using a torch to shrink the butt connectors is the only way I do it at the house. I use a heat gun at work or a bic lighter if it’s only 1 or 2. Probably going to do a swap on the Comet. But I’m looking at maybe a GM one wire.
Cam was like..."cheap skate" LOL
@@AutoRestoMod I’m better than I used to be, but yeah, I work with what I got to get the job done right now.
I need to do this for my 6 cylinder comet
Why use an external regulator? I was just looking at electric fans for my truck just yesterday!
Lots of Folks like the original stuff. We are just showing one way to do the job.
Thank you Cam
Cam for President 2034!
I was just looking at doing the same thing to my '57 F100
Hope this helped!
@@AutoRestoMod I believe I will be going the 1-wire route on my Y-block.
Im one of the three that feel attacked 😂🎉
You guys are great
Thanks!
I replaced my regulator and it was causing my headlights to flicker. So I put the old one back on and it works fine. What would cause the issue with a new one?
Some of the electronic ones are not as good as the original mechanicals. We may do a mini episode on that.
I’d like to see that episode. I replaced my external regulator and now my gen light is on when the key is OFF.
Made in China
Do you have the no wire no alternator upgrade video available..? Also interested in the no battery upgrade.. Thanks,
Ehhhh no.
What's the best size battery for a 1956 Fairlane with a 272 y block first ford battery not staying charged
I'd look at the generator and make sure it is charging like it should.
FYI
Alternators that LOOK LIKE GENERATORS are readily available.
And REALLY expensive.
Of course, the next step is to upgrade to a one-wire alternator. Good information as always.
Is that an upgrade or a shortcut?!? 😅
I am looking at doing a video of 1 wire vs. 3G Ford.
@@AutoRestoMod after the wagon gets up and running!!!!
Nope
Why did you use the old voltage regulator. The new alternators I thought had the regulators internal to alternator???
You can do that. I wanted to show the old school way since we did the 3g Ford style a while back.
@@AutoRestoMod oh! I am working as we speak on my 1962 Falcon 2dr Sedan 170. My Generator light was coming on and decided to upgrade to alternator.
I want to eliminate wires to have a cleaner look and not use the existing regulator. What's the easiest way to do that? And do I need special brackets to hold the alternator?
Also should I use a 3 wire or 1 wire altenator?
Any video suggestions on line you might suggest?
wear is the best place to get parts for 56 f100 , to change over to alt. thanks
Depends on the engine. NPD has one for Y Blocks: www.npdlink.com/product/bracket-kit-alternator-conversion/143119?backurl=search%2Fproducts%3Fsearch_terms%3Dalternator%252Badapter%252Bbracket%26top_parent%3D50000%26year%3D1956&year=1956
Alt that look like gens are available. Just put one on.
Why not use a 3g from a 3.6l 97 Thunderbird
We'll be talking about that next.
No battery hold down?
Yeah, we have one, but we need that battery to move other cars right now. LOL
I don't know if your going to see this because your video isa few years old. I would've like more on connecting the factory wiring, (horns, etc.)
We do see them. The big issue is that there are differences between the big 3 and how they handled an alternator set up
Cam had a hot date?! 🍻⚡
Yes, but she was tired...
Will this work for an FE ?
It will work on any engine.
Unless you're restoring an all original car, alternators are universally better.
Better camera angle next time, while he unfastens bolts
Why not a one wire alternator
We wanted to show an alternative. This style of alternator is easy to get at the local parts store. We'll be doing a video on the pros and cons of one wire and 3G Ford.
Where is the fender cover!!!
Where is the fender covers?
We ummm covered that.
Some care about even poor paint. Some dont.
What was the last year Ford used a generator?
My 64 1/2 Mustang had a generator. I thought they used them that year until they ran out and later ones from that year used alternators. So it was somewhere around 65-66 (probably depends on which model Ford as to what year they swapped them). My understanding is all 65+ Mustangs had alternators.
Mid 64 on Most of the Ford line.
Haha literally threes!
Yup!
A highend generator beats the dumb alternator
OK!
50/50 paintjob

LOL it is more like 100 yards away...
