Im rather weary of the calisthenics cult preaching its virtues. When was the last time you saw 60 year olds at the local outdoor workout area doing muscle ups and handstands on the bar? "A lot of calisthenic athletes"? Name just three over the age of 65. There are hundreds of millions of people on instagram so surely it will be easy for you to name three seniors who can still do tricks on the bars.

TLDR: Reach your natural limit as early as possible and maintain it, because it's easier to maintain muscle than build it from scratch when you're older. Scooby has always maintained a high level of muscle mass, that's why he hasn't aged as badly or lost much of it. And preserve your joints. And don't do drugs.

This. 100% this. I more or less peaked genetically mass wise at 205 (lean) when I was 26. I’m 46 now and still 205 lean and, you guessed it, I look pretty much the same. But my friends, who are not in shape, the same age look MUCH older. Most people I meet assume I’m still in my early 30s. Even if you’re not trying to gain mass, resistance training in general is so good to help your body regenerate in general. It makes you look younger! :)

Scooby you're an inspiration. Thanks so much for the content, it helped me lose weight and get my health in order. Your physique in your 60's is better than 90% of the human population in general. I'm really working on cleaning up my diet and bad habits further. Looking nice is fine, but man the feeling when you're eating clean, exercising, sleeping well. It changes your whole outlook and approach to life. That goes for the mind too. Anxiety is way lower, I can think clearer, solve problems better at work... Health is the foundation of everything else we want in life. I wish I took it seriously when I was younger, but I'm making progress now.
Some old common sayings that are so damn true: Mind and body are one, Movement is medicine, and You are what you eat. This should be tattoo'd into every young person, showed the consequences of being overweight, diabetes. Its no joke.

Love this video, learning a lot. I never trained as a bodybuilder, but I trained for the sport of hockey since about 25, IM 49 now. That looks like a strength training workout with low rep range compound lifts, Olympic style lifts, plyometrics, circuit training, and some odds and ends for shot, core, for stability and balance, short sprints, ladder drills. And the results of this have been more explosive strength, and not too much size increase. Good cardio for shorter periods, high agility, foot speed, and dexterity.etc.
Recently, I was unhealthy for a few years, and when I got back into the gym, I wasn’t ready to begin all out sprinting right away. So I was jogging, and that turned into longer and longer runs.
Well, eventually, I had this problem, which was that I began to loose the explosive intensity in my legs. To try to run faster and faster was hard. I felt as though maybe be I was ill, or worse, that my age had caught up with me, which really depressed me, because I just didn’t have the energy. And then one day I was doing research about tigers-specifically about their muscular property’s when I was reminded that fast twitch muscle turns into slow twitch muscle depending on what you do with it. I realized then that I’d been turning myself into a distance runner, rather than a sprinter.
What I did was to stop running distance-my cardio can come from circuit training, which is an anaerobic as well as an aerobic activity, as well as on ice workouts. And I began sprinting again, maybe 60% of all I’ve got, and slowly increased my effort and speed without increasing running time.
And wouldn’t you know it, even as a 49 year old, that lighter feeling in my legs came back. It’s the feeling that I could explode off one leg to a considerable degree, that came from a couple of decades of squats, deadlifts, etc. and the plyometrics to coordinate my leg strength. I’d lost it completely at one point.
So I guess the takeaway is that at the very least I know that 49 is not too old to play ice hockey with men that remain in their prime of life so long as the off ice training is right. Ill update you at 50, LOL
Thanks again for your video, and the inspiration. Cheers.

No drugs, no needles, no anything ever and I believe that's why I'm still in range to get a touch-and-go bench press of 315. That's unusual for my age class. Once (if) I get the 315, I might start thinking about getting into better shape. Per pure health, I guess strength doesn't count for much. In any case, for me, a big difference has been simply building my own garage gym when all the public gyms went down during the pandemic. There aren't any excuses when all you have to do is walk 15 feet to the gym. My biggest problem though is common to anyone my age: energy -- but I'm never going to take any artificial B.S. to pep myself up.

I will turn 68 this November, I know, big deal. I have a nice gym in my basement that sees me going hard for 80-100 minutes four times a week. (push-pill split). The poundages have gone down through the years. The pump doesnt blow me up any more. Who cares. I still enjoy ascending and descending pyramid training. Still shoot for 2 heavy sets then 3-4 sets around 8-12 reps then a fast final set of 20+reps. It is what I have done all my adult life. Maybe one day I will struggle with a naked aluminium bar. With any luck I will be dead before that day comes but then again if it is a challenge I will show up for it. Thanks for this educational posting. You have always told it like it is. Good luck with your surgeries and a speedy recovery.

My goal is to build muscle, get lean (15% BF range) while remaining injury free. At our age, being buff is great, but being injury-free is the best! Good luck with the shoulder replacement!

I'm about to reach 62, and I started back at the gym after a long break. I started 3 months ago, and I can't believe the gains I'm making. I work each body part twice weekly, doing a four day split. My metabolic rate is high, always has been. I have no joint issues. I see myself as lucky right now. I listen to my body and never overdo it. I'm not on drugs of any sort, and I feel great. I suppose that puts me in the top 1%, right? I feel blessed.

It took me years to see a difference in strength and size but it eventually payed off. I'm glad I never went the steroid route and followed the sam sulek types because putting in the hard work with diet and dedication through lifting is better than taking the easy route just because its faster. Your videos are great for young people like me that get it. Also enjoy other videos you do that are non lifting related.

Thanks but I never left. I have been doing at least one video every single week since 2006. The reason you have not seen me is that about a decade ago, the recommendation algorithm changed. The first 10 years I was on RUclips, 100% of the people who subscribed to me got notified of my new videos. After the algorithm changed, the "subscribe" feature was no longer used and RUclips would recommend new channels to you rather than showing you the people you had actually subscribed to. The day the algorithm was implemented, my views dropped to 1/25 of what they were. I am VERY fortunate that I was one of the first fitness channels so I could enjoy the golden age of RUclips in its first decade.

69 years old and still weight training 3Xweekly and doing cardio 2-3 X weekly. I've been doing this most of my life. I'm nowhere near as muscular as you, but I still have good strength and flexibility. I won't be able to build large muscle mass but, other than a few pounds of fat I would like to lose, I am pleased with my appearance. I have had shoulder and knee issues since my 30's so I work around them. No barbell bench pressing, no overhead pressing (because of shoulder issues) so I do dumbbell benching (for flat benching). I can do decline benching with a barbells, but no incline benching at all. I do pushups with elevated feet for upper pecs. I can squat low (Using a safety squat bar to take the strain off my shoulders and elbows) and can do several versions of a squats for legs without knee problems. I can also do leg extensions/curls without problems (actually improves my knee stability). I use an elliptical machine and walking for cardio. No running or vigorous activity involving fast direction changes because of knees. I use lateral dumbbell raises and reverse laterals for shoulders (the anterior deltoids get enough stimulation from various pressing movements).
