Scooby is the most earnest guy on the internet. My wife is not into bodybuilding but she has overheard Scooby videos over the years bc I watch them so much. I was watching this one and she randomly says to me “man I’d be so bummed if it turned out Scooby was a bad guy in real life.” It’s true! I believe in Scooby. Still inspiring me after so many years, Scooby! I try to remember how lucky I am to be able bodied and to have generally very good health whenever I'm feeling unmotivated. I try and tell myself it's a waste to not workout when I can. I still remember early in my gym going, I saw a guy who was missing an arm below the elbow. He took out a special prosthetic that had an end which coud be screwed onto a bar. He put it on and proceeded to do benchpress! If that guy can work out, so can I!

I agree with your two secrets. Even though I lift moderate weight to about 10 reps, I do them to failure which ends up around 8-12 depending upon whether it is at the beginning or end of the workout. Also I do a pull exercise the go immediately to a push exercise without rest. This keeps my heart rate high the whole workout and I finish my total body workout faster.

Well, I'm sure healthy T levels are optimal. And at 63 requiring supplementation to remain at normal levels is expected. The problem comes when 20, 30, 40 year olds think they need it when their normals are within the normal range (low end is fine).
Taking TRT is not without serious risk to your body's natural ability to create testosterone. Only take it if you truly need it. It is not a magic pill to manliness at all.

New to the channel and inspired to see Scooby in such amazing shape at 63 and Greek God level at my age (46). One thing that surprised me is his recommendation for high volume. When I was younger and completed I used very high volume, but as I've gotten older I've reduced repetition which seems to reduce joint inflammation. To compensate, I've slowed reps and hyper focused on negatives and hard contractions, which seems to work, but I'm seeing Scooby and that massive chest 😮 thinking I need to do what he's doing. Hmm.

@@scooby1961I don't know if it's because I'm unfit, achieving god level rep intensity or involving too many other muscles but even when I'm doing regular 20 mile bike rides with 3,000ft of elevation (with no cheating like stopping or standing on the pedals) I struggle with super sets! I'm absolutely gassed the whole time but I do feel good afterwards so I'll be sticking with it.

    • @kennethg9277
      @kennethg9277 Месяц назад

@@cwillatts your comment raises interesting points; all training is to some extent specific (ie an expert cyclist isn't automatically an expert runner, even though both are high level cardio pursuits). Resistance training cardio is a different beast again. Perhaps it's because cycling is LISS compared to weights even on relatively challenging rides, or perhaps the body adapts so efficiently to cycling that those rides have effectively become non-challenging... or a combination of both.
Personally heavy deadlifts always get me more out of breath than sprints do.

Scooby is right that you must always train to failure, but there is nothing wrong with failing at the low end. I was doing the traditional 3 sets of 8 to 12 reps and had decided for safety reasons that my limit for squats would be my body weight - 195. So when I could do 195 without failure, this is what I did - I went to 5 sets of 195, 185, 175, 165, and 155. I failed at 165 and 155 meaning I could do more than 8 and less than 12. When I finally passed, I added another set at 145. To make a long story short, now I'm doing 195, 185, 175, 165, 155, 145, 135, 125, 115, and 105. I fail at 125, 115, and 105, and I got good results. Furthermore, my joints thank me! Of course, I do other leg exercises, but that is another story for another time. I'm 66 years old

Then you've got to have another 3 hours or so before you go to bed. You should slowly get tired and wind down after eating. You can also try a walk after the meal. i dont body build but train for a fitness look and keep a very slim waist which i consider essential to highlight gains to best effect... staying around 13% bodyfat suits me and allows a healthy social life and the odd day having a blast.....

I have one question, because I am thinking of getting a TRT. I read a ling time ago that you are getting TRT treatment, too. What's your experience so far about this? In what way would it make it harder for you to keep your muscle mass, if you stopped using TRT and are there any negative side effects you have experienced so far, if I may ask?

Plus it might trigger some people to file lawsuits (about personal statements about medicine). I did it in the spur of the moment, because I always ask unbiased people about their OWN experience instead of relying purely on the words of those who could be influenced by "other motivs and intentions" ;-) Thank you again for your answer anyway, Scooby. Hey Scooby, out of curiosity, I was wondering if you have given any thought to the possibility of going to failure caused any of your current joint issues? I train to failure myself and I am creeping up on 50 now and avoiding joint issues is my concern at this time. I have started using very slow tempos and more focused on maintaining muscle mass rather then building. I was really curious if your issues are due to training or rather an injury from long ago or just genetic issues?

Its only my right shoulder that is the problem so I suspect decades of beach volleyball for my shoulder problem. One would expect both shoulders to be shot if it were lifting that was the culprit. As far as going to failure, I suspect that made my shoulder last longer.

Amazing how I came to the same conclusion. What's the point in doing 3min+ rests between sets when you can do at least another exercise in between on a different muscle group?I still leave about 30sec-1min rest after supersetting. my body doesn't recover that fast and the heart rate and breathing is high right after the exercise

I know you clearly stated this superset routine is for you, but in another video I believe you said if you could do it all over again you'd do more reps (less weight) and a full body routine to avoid injury to your shoulder? Am I remembering that correctly?
I know you you can't go back in time but have you transitioned to a full body routine? A kind of better late than never thought process?

3 things, 1, your cardio capacity is crazy high because you do properly cardio, in my case I don't do a lot of cardio and my capacity is not great, so yes, I need rest after a challenging set of pulldowns. 2, going to failure for me has not worked always, for instance when I stopped going to failure in incline dumbbell press my strength shot up dramatically, but still close to failure, left 1 or 2 in the tank. I know, I should train cardio more seriously. 3rd thing, for me I enjoy having small conversations with people I work out with, some people might enjoy a little social aspect to their workouts especially if they have a workout buddy, so I don't think this hurts especially if it keeps you consistently getting to the gym because you enjoy your time there. Of course within reason. Gyms can be a little like the ancient greek agora, especially nowadays that fora have moved online it's one of the last few spaces remaining an in person forum to talk to people.

Since then I got a brilliant PT who corrected my form and have been doing a lot better. My question is would going to failure with perfectly controlled form mitigate CNS fatigue, or should we still expect it? what preventative measures can we take to slow it down if going to failure is the objective?

Scooby, you may be right on failure but we must understand what are we speaking of when we say failure. What I see is a tremendous lack of intensity and it takes intensity and I agree if you do not have a plan for every set and are doing something like 3 sets of 10 or 3 sets of 15 with the same weight or increasing weight and never hitting at least positive failure, you are just going through the motions and your body will quickly adjust to this and there will be no gains.
I am 64 and have trained since 17 and I take no phone to the gym, I want focus and atmosphere. We would have to have a conversation about what is failure. God bless you if you do not become cardio taxed during the muscles groups you mentioned ( I know you are big on the bike) , my cardio taxing might not be anywhere near complete but being taxed my next set cannot be as good a set until I have full control of my breathing.
Back to failure. I work out alone and the body gyrations of which you speak are part of my going to failure. I am going to perform as many in a strict fashion as I can and then I am going to cheat to some degree after coming to positive failure and now I am taxing the muscle toward negative failure. I am going to incorporate negatives, mechanical change ( thumbs opposed, to thumbs up) both arms to single arm, holds at the mid point or contracted point some way to increase TUT and intensity.
For example, Monday I am going work my low back hip complex with deadlift, RDL and hip thrust, they will tax my cardio but I super set these with shoulder raises and light DB presses (Scott and regular) for pretty much every set. Most exercises will be 4 super sets. I just breath hard through the shoulder work and then a 1:30 - 1:45 - 2:00 min rest, where I stretch hamstrings, shoulders getting ready for my next super set.
Your partial, full body is a super workout. I highly recommend them as I noted above incorporating lower movements and upper movements in each workout but emphasizing one or the other. -CD

Avoid low rep flyes. Or even dumbbell flyes at all. Dumbbell flyes are hard on the shoulder joints. But doing them medium weight to light is ok, I would say. And listen to your body. The signs it gives you. Anticipate when getting bad signs. Drop an exercise that does gives problems to you. There are many exercises, no need to do one that bothers your joints.

    • @scooby1961

IMO the reason that most people are "hardgainers" is that they dont push themselves hard enough nor understand what it means to go to failure. If your CNS gets destroyed doing a bodybuilding workout to failure then you might want to get a full checkup from a doctor. A powerlifting workout taxes your CNS, not a bodybuilding workout.

He spoke about volleyball maybe part of being the culprit. The overhand serve, hence the one shoulder problem only. And also heavy flyes. They are hard on the shoulder joint. The push ups he does now, are way less taxing . Still very good for the muscles.
Low rep flyes are not a great thing for the joints...I've done flyes myself for decades. But quit them recently. Right shoulder gives issues for quite a long time now. With push ups zero problems.
