    Hey I think most hs kids need to take 1 day off bc most of them DON'T know their bodies yet. And their bodies are still developing fast. As a pro runner or an elite collegiate runner, it makes more sense to take less days off... bc you know your body much better than the average hs kid does. You prob stayed healthy enough to have a pro career bc you did regularly take days off during high school. But I guess we'd agree that kids needs to progress up to a point where they don't need so many days off. But in the beginning I think it does make some sense to schedule days off regularly.

    I think that quote was from Michael Phelps who didn’t take a day off for 5 years. Except he said that it was 52 days out of the year he was training on that his competition was not. But, Michael did struggle with major depression because he had identity issues since he only viewed himself as a swimmer. But, runners tend to take less off days then swimmers in general for some reason.

    • @CasaBenny

    Last spring when quarantine hit and it ended my Track season, I still went out to run anywhere between 3-6 days a week. All the runs I did were very chill and easy runs. About in June when we started training for XC I was able to do the longer easy-medium effort runs with general ease. By the start of the XC season I was In a lot better shape then I had been the previous year and got a PR in the first time trial we did of our official season. Was the #1 runner on my team for the whole season and got some PR's. Although during the latter half of the season I got a decently bad foot/knee pain that persisted till the end of that season. Thinking now I should've eased off a bit at the mid/end of the season (before I got pain) and probably stretched/rolled more. Epic thing the quarantine did for me running wise, but now it's time for Track season to start this year and I'm hype for it :)

    @maxoesterling4008 3 года назад

    Nick, at first I was inclined to disagree with you...but as you started explaining your reasoning and exactly what you meant, I totally agree! Although one thing I discovered for me at least is that I've had my best races after taking 2-3 days off before the race. 2-3 days out I'll do one last workout at near race pace, then take 2-3 days of rest (maybe one short 2-4 mile really easy jog) and then on race day I feel fresh and fast! This has worked almost every single time as opposed to working hard right up to the race. I think this depends on the person...I'm the kind of runner who pushes hard in workouts, and will run hard just because I feel good that day :) So saving energy by forcing myself to take a few days off, PLUS eating a lot of healthy food during that period, I have had some really great races doing that!
    Thanks for explaining this! I'm also a coach for a team, and this info could come in really handy!

    Well---when you start "really" training--of course you train twice a day-----most top runners do-possibly using 1 day as a long run.
    Personally---I won SO many races with no days off & twice a day 7 days a week for very long training blocks.( 6+ months!)
    Basically,I was running 12K barefoot in grass( am) & 8K pretty quick on a slightly graded treadmill.w -3-4x flat out miles & 10-12x mid 60's 1/4's on the track----def did the trick for me. Most people it's not so much as Nick said a question of " durability" it's more a case of mind over matter & constantly answering " why am I doing this?"
    Come race day---surging that last mile---hitting the tape----its def worth it.

    As long as the definition of “training” includes workouts, nutrition, and recovery, then this is dead on.
    This totally works as long as the easy days are in fact “easy”. Years ago, I thought “easy pace” was slightly sub 8 per mile......looking back, I’m pretty sure that I never raced in a state where I had shed all of the fatigue from training, mostly due to doing easy days too fast. That being said, I totally agree that a 7 day running/cross training schedule is best when the easy days are done right. It’s pretty telling when you see world class runners doing easy pace at 9:00-9:30 per mile, sleeping 10 hours plus per day, Using water treadmills and even the ElliptiGO to log more miles without the leg beating. Heck, some of the top long course triathletes in the world are older than 35......unheard of just 15 years ago other than a few outliers.

    That's why you can't be married to a schedule. You can schedule days off but if you feel good and you're not overly tired, then by all means go train. I'm almost 45 now and I schedule one day off per week. If I feel okay, then I'll do something active but not running. Unless I feel extremely good and the weather is nice and bla bla. You get my point.

  • @markmolloy1381

    I go on a run everyday. I'm fortunate to not deal with injuries. I'm doing 50-60 miles each week usually with 1 long day, 2 workouts and I usually double on Fridays. I just really enjoy going for a run, especially my long run each week.

  • @seandunlap1743
    @seandunlap1743 3 года назад +3

    I'd point out that RANDOMLY doing any single part of a training plan is not a plan at all... rest is training, just like consistent aerobic miles, prehab, hill running, and then the various types of "quality" work. The cycle of overuse, injury, time off is no way to build an aerobic base... so let's not dissuade people from scheduling off days... better to be missing 52 days sprinkled throughout the year, than missing 52 days in a row while you're hurt twice a year, from "pushing through it". (Wait, am I the old man screaming, "get off my lawn" right now ??) Love the vids Nick- just realize there are a lot of younger viewers on this channel... a day off every week or two or three is better than injury... #$.02

      @@shravanpradeep8434 I’d start running half of what you did before you were healthy if there’s no pain 3 times a week and go to 4-6 after a month or so and then getting back to where you were in terms of time running. Ice like 3 times a day if it does hurt and do toe raises on stair case. Dig into your fascia(muscle of calf) with foam roller or a backend of comb with coconut oil and just massage it like 10 minutes a day. Stay off hills best you can if your Shins currently hurt. If your shins hurt in a small spot get it looked at by doctor. Also for future get your easy days easy, workout days hard(tempo runs and repeats, and run like 3-4 top speed sprints of 30m with a running start (look up flying sprints) 1-2 times a week(not only helps strengthen legs but loosens them out from your typical jog stride.

I've been running 5 days a week for almost 3-4 months now and randomly chose mondays and thursdays as my rest days. At the start training and working 3 days at a restraurant felt hard on the body so the rest definitely helped. I used to be 100% in your camp Nick, but this is one that I pretty strongly disagree with now. Like you, I LOVE training, which is exactly why I NEED to schedule days off to force myself to get enough rest/recovery to make the necessary adaptations to get stronger.
    Last year, I did months in a row of no days off with doubles a few times per week, often doing 15hour weeks with 1000 TSS (cyclist/runner/triathlete here, easier to get big hour numbers riding the bike with low impact). My biggest strength is that I'm durable and mentally engaged to do big hours- I never was injured during those big weeks, and teetered on the edge but avoided complete overtraining.
    That said, my fitness plateaued in the 2nd half of the year and my motivation waned to keep doing those big week. I could handle the volume, but it wasn't performance maximizing to have no days up and to back up big week after big week. The chronic fatigue of never giving your body more than 24hours to rest and repair takes a toll after a couple months, but it's so slow and gradual that you never notice (think of the frog in boiling water analogy). Sure it won't hurt once to go out and run on a nice day, but for me, the temptation will be too strong to do that unless I put my foot down and say absolutely no training.
    I took 2 full weeks off all training to reset, and since then I have incorporated 1 full day of rest/week. I'm still doing similar total volume but the one day to reset each week is huge for staying mentally and physically fresh. I feel sluggish at the start of the next session, but overall I'm more fresh and better able to hit the critical sessions needed to build fitness. So far it's working- I've hit PRs in both cycling and running. Particularly in endurance sports, we're prone to work too hard, and many people like me need the reminder that rest IS training.

    Is this the same no matter your age and ability, for example I am a 61 year old man that just ran a training marathon on monday in 3:37 with a zone2 avg HR and an easy recovery 9k on tuesday and a relatively easy progressive 10 miles wednesday but now being advised I should not have done this but have had at least a day or two rest.

      Depends on how you feel. I'm doing a time trial next week and taking a day off before It, mostly because I've just started picking up training hard and Ik my legs need a bit of a break from the pounding. Would prob recommend doing a light easy day or something, but It really just depends on the person and what your body can handle rn

      Hopefully your lungs are better than mine. Give yourself time and grace. I had it in early 2020 and I was able to run a 12 minute 2-mile (I'm 37 now) without a problem the week before I got it. When I felt "better" after a week, I tried running again. I couldn't run more than 100 yards without feeling like dying. That reduced lung capacity lasted for 4-5 months.

    Hey Nick, I’ve been training in my aerobic base stage for about 5 weeks, but on week 3, some how I felt like I burnt out while increasing my weekly mileage from 30 to 35. Since then, my heart rate’s been higher than it should be, resting and especially running. Someone told me to just run very slow each day until I feel better, while someone else told me to take a week off. What do you think I should do?

    • @davidmontalvo6761
      @davidmontalvo6761 3 года назад

      Maybe you can change things up by trying different routes or running with someone. You can try taking a day/week off and cross training. Listen to your body as Nick said.

      I found with so much base training that I got a little stale and was getting slower at any given heart rate, I added in some strides to get back some form and efficiency and I cemented those aerobic gains.
