I remember the first time I saw my Palutena's reflect break. I thought I was on drugs but then it happened again a few months later and I was highly shocked by that. Glad to see it's not just her otherwise...oh god, Palutena XD
Sonicman0123456789 I thought the same thing when I saw the in-game tip for the "Squeaky Hammer". Weeks later, while playing a golden-hammer-only match with my cousin, I actually got a squeaky hammer.
Non Johns This prevents the Black Hole because the Black Hole's main component is a line of Super Scope blasts being infinitely reflected. With this mechanic, the blasts would break through the reflectors before there are enough blasts to create the black hole.
The new "treeball" Last month with a random person found in smash vs.1 for glory I invented a "volleyball" with king dedede....I launched the Gordo and if he was in time pressing 2/A pick up the Gordo in his hammer and this is infinite if you are in time.... I wanted to do a video but I decided to not because I haven't the right struments to do this.....sorry for my English, I'm Italian:/ Can you leave like to comment, then he can make a video! Pliiiiiiiz :D
***** Correct me if I'm wrong but, I think this is a glitch. Usually if enough damage is dealt to a tree, then it will sort of shrink and disappear. However, it seems that Nintendo didn't create a shrinking animation for an airborne tree, so the tree will just disappear abruptly after taking enough damage..
***** Every single move, item, and projectile in the game has different coding and animations (for the most part) that differ from the ground and air. The tree only has ground physics and animations, so in the air, it will have the same effect, but jot the animation.
Paulatena's reflector broke in my latest video and everyone was super surprised xD I would be a bit unfair if you could just hold your reflector forever
By this, can I assume that different reflectors have different durabilties? Or are they all the same but the different multipliers make the stronger ones volley less times? Possibly a combination of these two?
***** we started making the video without showing the % to make it look better.. midway in I (cFive) actually thought it might have been interesting to see the % the tree makes after breaking through the shield (and hitting the characters), but we were too lazy to redo it^^
***** All Reflectors except Ness's Bat/Lucas's stick can reflect anything that is 49% or lower before becoming useless(Or in the case of Kid Icarus characters, completely breaking since they can also take physical hits and break from them, with 50% being beyond it's endurance.) \] Lucas and Ness' fsmashes take 99% before the reflector part of the hitbox becomes useless, causing the damaging part of the hitbox to clash with the 99% Tree's hitbox and get outprioritized due to being outdamaged by more than 9%. And the more you're outdamged, the more lag you suffer, hence why Ness has insane cooldown due to being outdamaged by nearly 80%. Villager's does not break as far as I know, having 1.93 dmg multiplier and resetting all other multipliers. As for the multipliers, each Reflector has a different power and speed multiplier. For Example, Falco's Acelee-Reflector Custom has a 2.0 Speed multiplier with a 1.1* damage multiplier, while Fox's normal Reflector has 1.5 in both speed and damage.
YiToSmash Then I guess it returns to it's original+ power. I've tried throwing strong and/or reflected things at it and it never breaks. The thing thrown out always deals the same damage as it should too.
Indolent Emover You're telling me that Palutena's reflector, which CLEARLY shattered like a glass window, didn't break? The reflectors do indeed break.
Haven't gotten to testing it in Smash 4 yet, but I believe that in previous Smash Bros. games at least, Fox's reflector could break if it took enough hits and it would look like a shield break (he would be dazed for a bit)
I noticed this playing a game of Mewtwo Tennis with a friend. Since it was with shadowball, I always thought it was because the projectile was moving too fast for the active reflect box to detect and reflect back. Interesting to see this property in other stuff.
i believe most people call the it that the move is getting "stale", but I guess that makes more sense than saying that reflectors get weaker, but rather they just get stale
Beefy Smash Doods its not that the reflector is breaking (necessarily)...if you noticed, the tree could only ever be returned twice, and the third hit always "breaks" the next reflection. I think the number of times that projectiles can be reflected differs with each one. Haven't tested it though
Ness tried PK Thunder! Lucas's Franklin Badge reflected the lightning back! Ness's Franklin Badge reflected the lightning back! Lucas's Franklin Badge reflected the lightning back! Ness's Franklin Badge reflected the lightning back! Lucas took mortal damage!
Well I know that if you manage to break Fox's reflector without getting hurt in the process, Fox will be left holding his reflection device without any shield animation.
Its interesting to see that it breaks after an item gets reflected for the third time in total. It doesnt matter which player reflected it, the person reflecting it for the third time will always get a failed reflection.
Anime Forever it actually depends on the % the tree deals... since after every reflection it becomes stronger, at some point the reflectors break! (i think its about 50%, not sure tho)
I have a suggestion for one video, I don't know if you have already done it. Taking up the idea of the reflectors and how they multiply the damage/potency of objects, what about a situation where you combine them with counters, and then combine it again with another counter and so on (here I'm assuming a counter-attack gains power depending on what it returns)? Having at the end a super damaging object/action. For example: Villager throws the tree, Ness hits it to another Ness who hits again, then Marth receives with counter and at his side is Shulk waiting within his counter, then again Roy awaits absorbing all that damage ending up with an attack that can cause a high percent hit.
Tree Ball 7 (or 8) players; 3 teams 1 (or 2) Villagers stand atop, planting trees : Team 1 2 vs 2 characters with reflectors: Team 2 and 3 2 chars positioned at the sides, representing 'goals' for each team, set at 300% : Team 1
looks like every reflector has a cap of % of damage that can reflect, cuz the reflected tree gets stronger lets say fox reflector has a 100% damage capacity, if he tries to reflect a move that does 100%+ damage it wont be reflected, but he cna still reflect weaker moves, like link's arrows but its just a theory a SMASH theory thanks for reading
Jordan Ang That's obviously not true, because it was all the same item, and was very distinctly reflected a different number of times depending on the reflector.
Lucas Winsor I think someone had a better take on it, that all reflectors don't necessarily "break" (well, aside from the few with damage thresholds like pit and palutena), but that the projectile, after several reflects, grows too strong and can no longer be reflected. It's the reason why Gardevoir can't even block the first tree that hits her. In a way it's breaking the barrier/reflectors, but I think it's less "all these have blocking hp that destroy the barrier" and more "the game literally glitches the object through the character, either hitting them, or going through the reflector.
well, your kinda right. The reflectors don't have Hp, they just can't reflect if the projectile does too much damage. but it isn't a glitch, unless I i mistook what you said.
Ness' bat seems to be the best since he don't take damage from the attack (and sometime actually reflect it). I thought Lucas' one had the same properties...
It would appear the number of times an item is reflected also effects if the reflector will break best examples of this are Ness's bat at 2:16 where 2 Ness's are able to hit the tree once, but the third Ness's reflect fails on the first try and at 3:08 with the Franklin badges, the little mac on the right uses the same Franklin badge twice while the little mac on the left reflects once with one Franklin badge, picks up a new one, then the reflect fails on the first attempt with the new badge. I'd have to guess there are 2 things going on here: 1. All reflectors have a durability limit and break after so much abuse 2. An item that has been reflected greatly increases in damage after each reflect
The Omega Gamer 707 But the ending lag is hard to deal with, given that the end of the animation on shulk's isn't the end of the attack. He has VERY little time between the end of one vision and the startup of another. Not saying counters aren't punishable. But with the damage they now deal out (shulk's can KO at 30. that's fucking BROKEN.) there should be atleast SOME balance mechanic in place.
SenecystRemarks Shulk is the only character out of the over 50 fighters who has a broken counter. But for most other counters, waiting for the animation to run out works.
If anyone is wondering, this has always been a thing in smash bros. In melee, fox's reflector can be broken by abusing redshells. Soon his reflector will fail to reflect and he will go into the "Shield Break," animation.
DarkLink1996 It's probably with weak projectiles like the rapid fire from scope gun that it won't break. But it can certainly break from red shells, I know that from personal experience. Maybe they capped how much a projectile will increase in power, meaning that the weaker stuff is incapable of breaking reflectors, even when reflected many times?
Yeah I noticed the franklin badge one when playing some silly stuff with a friend. 150 stamina, franklin badge and flower on. (Intended no projectiles, hence badge, hit and run strategy). Found that Megaman's FSmash would bounce a lot of times but consistently hit the opponent regardless (depending on who fired)
Falco's down+B and Pit/Dark Pit side+B seems a little more safer though. Despite Falco's break as well, he can somewhat dodge what could've been instant death for him. Same goes for Pit/Dark Pit.
All reflectors have a durability of 50% damage, not collectively exept for pit and dark pit's, anything dealing at or above 50% damage with one hit will either break or pass right through the reflector
There's also something unique that happens if an attack is strong enough to one-hit-shield-break and you try to reflect it: the reflector will break in the exact same manner as a shield!
Well I knew about Pit and Dark Pit since I main them, but the rest I was unaware of. I guess it makes sense though, as you don't want a projectile getting too strong for the game to handle. Like how there's a way to freeze Melee using Roy's counter.
You'd think some attacks would break most reflectors instantly, like Corrin's Lunge on Mario's/Dr. Mario's cape, Corrin's Counter, Cloud's Limit Breaker, most of Ganon's attacks or even Villager's Axe cutting tree move would break them instantly for a time being because it's so powerful but not after like 3 bounces off of it which is basically impossible while actually fighting...
Incase anyone is still confused by them "breaking" Any form of reflectors are cancelled out/broken when the said object has been reflected and builds up too much damage. So I guess the reflectors don't "break" but for a better word, fail.
Captain Falcon with the Home Run Bat, Mii Swordfighter, Fox, Zelda, Mario and Dr. Mario look like they just missed the timing... and I'm pretty sure Gardivor's barrier didn't break, it just couldn't handle the force of the tree.
There's a tip in the game itself that has said as much in regards to reflectors breaking. I think the % is 80 in the tip, but it was a while since I last saw it.
There still one question to be answered: in the Pokeball Gardevoir, did the pokemon actually reflect the move itself, even though could not send the tree flying back?
Palutena: 5 (technically 6 but her reflector broke on 6) Falco: 4 Zelda: 4 Home-run bat: 3 Franklin badge: 3 Mario: 2 Dr. Mario: 2 Pit: 2 (despite not being affected in damage his guardian orbitars still broke) Dark pit: 2 (same deal with pit) Pit side: 2 (same deal with guardian orbitars) Dark pit side: 2 (same deal with pit side) Fox: 2 R.O.B: 2 Ness: 2 (there’s endlag that’s even worse than spinphony) Lucas: 2 Mewtwo: 2 Mii sword: 2 Mii gun: 2 Gardevoir: 2
It appears to me as if projectiles have some hidden reflection amount that is added every time they're reflected, and if it's beyond a certain value, it no longer reflects. Different reflectors appear to increase it different amounts. So it's not actually the reflectors that are breaking, it's the projectile gradually becoming non-reflectable. At least that's my observation. Pitt/Dark Pitt's reflector being broken by physical attacks is the only exception.
So BSD! I made a weird discovery I want you guys to study! When getting trumped, I realized I can wall jump away from the ledge on just about any stage, specifically with little Mac. This seems to put me in a much better position then trying to double jump back to the stage or recover. Thank you :D
i don't think they actually break, but i think they put a cap on how many times a projectile can be reflected. they might have done this to prevent glitches like the black hole glitch from melee.
The best way to play volleyball is with a giant broccoli.
XD
Yup
Round Pi so true
Round Pi totally not a tree
Round Pi XD
Pictured at 2:33 : Lucas and Claus's favorite childhood game, Tree Tennis.

Flurriestone But that's a horribly dangerous game! Trees explode in their world!
Just imagine walking in the street, and see a tree passing by, flying above the buildings.

No, Lucas and Claus will play tree tennis.
"Huh. Is it tree season already?"
+Crotoman111 XD

Mewtwo uses Reflect! But nothing happens!
Tree uses Ear Rape! It's super effective!!

I feel like you should know if you're on drugs.
I don't understand why this is getting so many thumbs up lol.
Sonicman0123456789 I thought the same thing when I saw the in-game tip for the "Squeaky Hammer". Weeks later, while playing a golden-hammer-only match with my cousin, I actually got a squeaky hammer.
I honestly don't understand why my comment got so many likes. But hey I'm not complaining lol
It just occurred to me that this was probably done to prevent the black-hole glitch.
Or maybe the op pikmin. We will never know...
How does this prevent the black hole glitch anyway?
Don Lam You can't spam reflect.
300PIVOTMASTER can you send me a video demonstrating this?
300PIVOTMASTER Well SM64 Fox broke his reflector with a red shell so this isn't the first game to do so. Also yes I agree this prevents the black hole
Non Johns This prevents the Black Hole because the Black Hole's main component is a line of Super Scope blasts being infinitely reflected. With this mechanic, the blasts would break through the reflectors before there are enough blasts to create the black hole.
Lol this is like a sport XD
The new "treeball"
Last month with a random person found in smash vs.1 for glory I invented a "volleyball" with king dedede....I launched the Gordo and if he was in time pressing 2/A pick up the Gordo in his hammer and this is infinite if you are in time....

LYoshi102 I did the volleyball thing with Kirby and Dedede.
Hammers only. :D
How do you know if you invented it? Somebody else could've invented it before you.
LYoshi102 Whether or not you invented it, I would love to see you display your Gordo Volleyball. Haha.
I saw you from one of Etika's videos in the comments.
So no one else is wondering what happened at the end? Ok.
Woah...wtf was that?
In a black hole xD

Silver Smasher XD

Beefy Smash Doods All good, man. It's things like this that get more questions like the one I asked out there. Great videos and good luck to you.

What Ness said when his bat broke: OH NO!
Don't you mean
OHkay
How did you know :/
Ness From Onett This is not okey!
Must have been a corked bat
Falco's reflector is one of the safest lol
Can the villager pocket things infinitely?
YiToSmash no he holds what he pockets
I'm pretty sure villager can pocket no matter how strong the projectile is
When he pockets something it returns to it's original power (unless you're using Amplifying Pocket).
SkaiCyan But the pocket itself amplifies the pocketed projectile's power by 1.5
YiToSmash
Then I guess it returns to it's original+ power. I've tried throwing strong and/or reflected things at it and it never breaks. The thing thrown out always deals the same damage as it should too.
I like how Palutena's reflector breaking has a unique sound and effect when it shatters
Yes. R.O.B's Sice Special is my favorite move.
Lucas and Ness are mine!
same
nobody cares
:(
lol
no, it's not that they break (well, pit's does), its just that after a while of reflecting, the projectile becomes too strong to be reflected.
Indolent Emover You're telling me that Palutena's reflector, which CLEARLY shattered like a glass window, didn't break? The reflectors do indeed break.
Obvious ninja not all of them break

Too strong to be reflected? Almost as if it BROKE through their defenses....
Joystick Stereo you’re telling me that because a tree went through a Light Screen that means it broke? The projectile just becomes too powerful.
Palutena's side special+villager's tree=pong!!!
*gravity pong
I noticed this playing a game of Mewtwo Tennis with a friend. Since it was with shadowball, I always thought it was because the projectile was moving too fast for the active reflect box to detect and reflect back. Interesting to see this property in other stuff.
are you sure this is the case? it sometimes looks like you jsut mistimed the reflector?
Wesley Hsieh We tried every scenario multiple times. Some moves just lose their ability to reflect again.
So yes: this is the case.
mk just wondering
Wesley Hsieh Smash does have that mechanic "Spam the same move it gets weaker type of thing"
i believe most people call the it that the move is getting "stale", but I guess that makes more sense than saying that reflectors get weaker, but rather they just get stale
Wesley Hsieh Stale it is!
Reflecting that tree back and forth as if it were nothing....
...Made me laugh so hard, my eyes became watery.
4:08 tune in next time for all trees can break
XD
xD
XDD
I think your timing is off, not that the reflectors (in some cases) are being broken. I'd have to see it closer to be sure.
BNZAZ it looks that way sometimes.. but we did it many times and i can guarantee you that we didnt miss :)
Beefy Smash Doods its not that the reflector is breaking (necessarily)...if you noticed, the tree could only ever be returned twice, and the third hit always "breaks" the next reflection. I think the number of times that projectiles can be reflected differs with each one. Haven't tested it though
Beefy Smash Doods where's megaman's skull barrier?
Mii fighters had the only custom moves

Rob: Sice special.... SICE? WHAT IS A SICE?
I have a suggestion for one video, I don't know if you have already done it. Taking up the idea of the reflectors and how they multiply the damage/potency of objects, what about a situation where you combine them with counters, and then combine it again with another counter and so on (here I'm assuming a counter-attack gains power depending on what it returns)? Having at the end a super damaging object/action.
For example: Villager throws the tree, Ness hits it to another Ness who hits again, then Marth receives with counter and at his side is Shulk waiting within his counter, then again Roy awaits absorbing all that damage ending up with an attack that can cause a high percent hit.
wow it must be 1999 in here.
breaking reflectors has been possible since smash64
because nothing has ever changed between iterations right?
But smash 64 came out in 1998...
Jan 21, 1999 was the official release date of smash64 in japan.
xxTheFallenAngelxxx yeah i just checked, you're correct
EarthBoundNess no it was 1999
It was awesome how you thought of Gardevoir's reflect and tested it to see if it had a limit.
You didn't use Megaman's skull shield with customs.
Customs lol
It says ALL reflectors.

lets say fox reflector has a 100% damage capacity, if he tries to reflect a move that does 100%+ damage it wont be reflected, but he cna still reflect weaker moves, like link's arrows
but its just a theory a SMASH theory thanks for reading

And now, Lucas and Claus playing tennis with a tree.
I'm pretty sure reflectors don't break but that items have a limit to how many times they can be reflected
Jordan Ang That's obviously not true, because it was all the same item, and was very distinctly reflected a different number of times depending on the reflector.
Hmm... Ok

I have a question
Very interesting! I like the little clip at the end too. How long did it take you guys to setup for the gardevoir test?
who noticed the c in side for rob
I've also seen that Fox's reflector can break if he's hit enough while it's up. It acted as if he had his shield broken.
Rob sice special. Kappa

Bayo's crawl can break kappa
You guys didn't notice the typo?
+Batabii kappa is a meme-ish thing lol
It's most probabily twitch's most used emote yet its buried in the middle of the list.
I love how you made this btw :P
Nintendo you may better fix those Tips.
Yeh...
Donnel Tinhead XD
It would appear the number of times an item is reflected also effects if the reflector will break
best examples of this are Ness's bat at 2:16 where 2 Ness's are able to hit the tree once, but the third Ness's reflect fails on the first try
and at 3:08 with the Franklin badges, the little mac on the right uses the same Franklin badge twice while the little mac on the left reflects once with one Franklin badge, picks up a new one, then the reflect fails on the first attempt with the new badge.
I'd have to guess there are 2 things going on here:
1. All reflectors have a durability limit and break after so much abuse
2. An item that has been reflected greatly increases in damage after each reflect
You forgot Mega Man
GoldenJoe That one obviously breaks dude.
Yeah, but it's good to see the limit.
GoldenJoe its 3 lol
he has 3 leaves around it and each hit breaks 1 leaf...
...what? SKULL BARRIER.
GoldenJoe I'm pretty sure he wasn't counting customs for normal characters...
lmao the sync with the reflect moves was great
Why can't counter break like dis... would balance it the fuck out.
SenecystRemarks Because counters suck, they could be punished so hard and if someone is spamming counter, you can read them and punish
souIess By punished hard you mean "Maybe grabbed because going for a hit is too dangerous."
Or you can wait for the animation to finish, then punish with a smash attack. That's what I do.
Sehr gut gemacht, finde ich cool wie ihr sogar die Items mit beachtet habt
2:33 the wrong brother died
If anyone is wondering, this has always been a thing in smash bros. In melee, fox's reflector can be broken by abusing redshells. Soon his reflector will fail to reflect and he will go into the "Shield Break," animation.
***** I thought the Black Hole glitch was a result of this *NOT* existing.
DarkLink1996 It's probably with weak projectiles like the rapid fire from scope gun that it won't break. But it can certainly break from red shells, I know that from personal experience. Falco's down+B and Pit/Dark Pit side+B seems a little more safer though. Despite Falco's break as well, he can somewhat dodge what could've been instant death for him. Same goes for Pit/Dark Pit.
Woah! Ya learn something new everyday! I didn't know this, interesting stuff.
That Ness set up was fresh
There's something satisfying about seeing a tree phase through Gardevoir's shield.
All reflectors have a durability of 50% damage, not collectively exept for pit and dark pit's, anything dealing at or above 50% damage with one hit will either break or pass right through the reflector
this was epic and hilarious to watch for some reason. the ness one was epic
Don't you just love R.O.B.'S Sice Special
TheHide'n'Seek Channel I know! At Christmas, I'm gonna get a Sice of that pie! Mmhmm!
nobody cares
Maceyoshiman about you
I'm kinda curious to see how this would play out on Smash Ultimate.
"Hey, you have plans for later?"
"Yeah. Gonna go throw a tree around in a park"
"K"
Its friggen hilarious to just watch that tree fly around the map
There's also something unique that happens if an attack is strong enough to one-hit-shield-break and you try to reflect it: the reflector will break in the exact same manner as a shield!
Well I knew about Pit and Dark Pit since I main them, but the rest I was unaware of. I guess it makes sense though, as you don't want a projectile getting too strong for the game to handle. Like how there's a way to freeze Melee using Roy's counter.
It's always been like this. Even back in the first game. It's just, back then when the reflector broke Fox got stunned like his normal shield broke.
Tree tennis. Great :) I loved it when pit sayed stay back... Pit you are talking with a tree....
And what about the Girahim's reflect? (Yes, he could reflect things)
On the home run bat, The fourth swing didn't happen in time, but captain falcon took the hit via the home run bat's super armor
I never knew R.O.B's "Sice Special" could break...
There still one question to be answered: in the Pokeball Gardevoir, did the pokemon actually reflect the move itself, even though could not send the tree flying back?
Palutena: 5 (technically 6 but her reflector broke on 6)
Falco: 4
Zelda: 4
Home-run bat: 3
Franklin badge: 3
Mario: 2
Dr. Mario: 2
Pit: 2 (despite not being affected in damage his guardian orbitars still broke)
Dark pit: 2 (same deal with pit)
Pit side: 2 (same deal with guardian orbitars)
Dark pit side: 2 (same deal with pit side)
Fox: 2
R.O.B: 2
Ness: 2 (there’s endlag that’s even worse than spinphony)
Lucas: 2
Mewtwo: 2
Mii sword: 2
Mii gun: 2
Gardevoir: 2
The tree moving in the air is funny as hell
@Beefy Smash Doods, i don't know if you missed that time,i think you did fox's reflector early.
It doesn't matter if it's too early. It WILL break.
I'm surprised at paluteana ( sorry if misspelled ) because hers actually broke while the others just didn't reflect at certain points.
I sure did love the part you used Pit's side special
So BSD!
I made a weird discovery I want you guys to study!
When getting trumped, I realized I can wall jump away from the ledge on just about any stage, specifically with little Mac.
This seems to put me in a much better position then trying to double jump back to the stage or recover.
Thank you :D
They've already made a video on that, look up anti-trump walljump
The pit of old has a few new fresh moves to show you!
this tree flying around looks so funny XD
I was impressed how long it took for ness to react, 8 seconds per second to get back to normal.
i don't think they actually break, but i think they put a cap on how many times a projectile can be reflected. they might have done this to prevent glitches like the black hole glitch from melee.
Try using another move after using the reflectors to reset the count on them for breaking before the projectile comes towards the characters again.
it looks like the only reason the reflectors break is if you jump and use them. Still love your channel guys! :D
The tree had enough of the shannanigans and decided to break the reflector
When did rob get a SICE special? That’s a never before seen move!
