To me alot of why Germans kept fighting even when the war was lost was their never ending thinking of the future and what would the future generations of their own people and their enemies say of them. I think had the Germans buckled and sued for peace after Stalingrad Germany wouldn't be what it is today perhaps. Because of Tenacity, they have earned the respect and fear of the surrounding nations and this respect brings with it alot of power and influence economically. By this theory perhaps giving up in effort to save lives at any cost isn't always the best long term plan... I am not sure i may be wrong

      1. Have the 2nd Polish army could not be larger than 400 tanks and assault guns. Tank forces of the 2nd army of the Polish Army: 1 tank corps - 3 tank brigades of 65 tanks. 3 self-propelled regiments of 21 assault guns (su-76, isu-122, su-85); 1 heavy tank regiment and 1 self-propelled regiment of 21 tanks and assault guns, respectively. 16 tbr in the composition of 65 tanks was in operational subordination. Total - 281 tanks and 84 assault guns. This is the full staff number, it could not be more, it could be less. 2. Total losses of 16 TBR were 69% of the personnel. not 90%, and 70% of tanks (45 pieces). Most likely you are confused with the 2nd tank brigade of the Polish Army. In total, 250 tanks and assault guns were lost in the battle (143 pieces - 1 tank corps of the poles (from April 17 to may 10), 45 pieces - 16 TBR, 17 pieces - other regiments and 45 tanks and assault guns - 7 guards mechanized corps) 3. the German Assault on Bautzen took 2 days - April 24 and 25, 1945. Against 2 red army divisions (1 mechanized division and 1 rifle division (the red army mechanized corps was equal to the German mechanized division (15,000 men))) 5 divisions (3 tank, 1 motorized and 1 infantry) fought. 4. The fascist offensive was stopped by Soviet counterattacks on April 26 and the red army's steadfastness in defense on April 27-28, rather than a lack of fuel. Sometimes they are hindered by mud and rain, then frosts or lack of fuel. Bad tanor always has something between his legs that prevents him from dancing well. 5. Temporary tactical success of the Germans in a secondary direction, the Soviet troops repelled the German offensive on the flank, with difficulty and with the involvement of additional forces.

It's tragic that so many people died in the final days of the war. Allegedly Świerczewski often was drunk while commanding. He was an old bolshevik who actually fought against Poland in the Polish-Soviet war and took part in the Spanish Civil War under the pseudonym "Walter". When he was killed in 1947 in an ambush of the Ukrainian nationalist partisans, the communists propaganda tried to make him a Polish national hero. It didn't catch on.

The Poles also had the bloody incompetent general Świerczewski on their side, and many of his men believed he was drunk while in command (which was not out of realm of possibility, it was well known that he was an alcoholic). But, because he was a veteran of the Spanish Civil War and a devoted communist, no bad word was allowed to be spoken about him during the Communist era. The battle of Bautzen was largely forgotten by the Polish historiography, and Świerczewski's incompetence and bravado was only made public after 1989.

I wonder to if the Red army manipulated the Polish units into being defeated. Everybody knew that the war was going to be over in a matter of weeks, and there were already disputes among the allies regarding Soviet occupation of Poland and the Polish government-in-exile in London. The LAST thing Stalin would have wanted therefore is an intact Polish force of 90,000 men that could be siding with the western allies and/or the anti-communist Polish government.

As for me I consider it a phyrric victory because it did have a great positive effect for Germany. It only increased the numbers of casualties on both sides. However, it is interesting to see how a smaller force of experienced and battle hardened soldiers can overcome a much greater force. The German tactics did prove to be successful once more.

without the British code-breaking, it has been reckoned that the war would have gone on 2-4 years longer, however, the combined efforts of all and some from within brought it to a timely end. The Russians were fortunate USA/ UK we were with them and supporting them, we were all fighting different wars, some more brutal than others. It was a mistake to start it.

Sadly, unlike the 1st Polish Army who had General Zygmunt Berling, the 2nd Polish Army had General Karol Swierczewski as their commander (Polish Armed Forces in the East). He commanded the Battle of Bautzen drunken. He was temporarily relieved of duty by his Soviet superior. However, at the insistence of NKVD (Soviet political police), he was reinstated. The problem with communism, one of problems, was that competence mattered less than political loyalty and Swierczewski was extremely loyal to Stalin.

The same thing happened with Premier Gierek in the 1970's and early 1980's before General Jaruzelski staged his coup d'etat (Soviets wanted the Poles to start producing weapons again). He did take loans and started consumer-goods economy (we, amongst other things, bought a juicer) and it could have been successful, if not for corruption in the Polish communist party. He could not punish any high ranking communist for corruption, except to exile them to a distant embassy. This lead to huge debt.

I remember hearing that even though the German army lost the war, they were the most efficient army in the whole war, even when they lost battles they would still inflict more damage than the enemy did to them. The only reason Germany lost is that they had too few resources and fought the most powerful nations all at once. For instance, if they had to face only the allied forces, they might have pulled off the victory, if they had battled only the Soviets, they would've probably won too. Also, the allies that Germany had were more of a hindrance than a help.

Recently i found your channel and i am glad i found it. Very interesting stuff. Altough i knew the battle of Bautzen before, i did not know it in details. Thanks for that. I have one more forgotten battle, i am sure you never heared of. Well, its more a series of withdrawn fightings. The story of the 11th Jäger Regiment in Western Germany from January 1945 till its end at the beginning of April 45. Not much info is available. The only good book in english is In Final Defence of the Reich. But it left out some american units, like the 87th US infantry Divison Golden Acorn or the 76th US Infantry Division. Some descriptions in english available maybe arent correct at all or are overdone or shorten the fighting events. Best book yet available is the german language book Die letzte Schlacht im Taunus by Dr. Roland Krebs. There is a memoir book called Black Edelweis by Mister Voss, but it doesent cover the time untill the end of the Regiment in the woods around the town of Büdingen, northeast of Frankfurt am Main. Of course the 6th SS Nord lost, but low on men, ammo and low on fuel, these ss soldiers gave the US soldiers a hard time and bloody noses. When the 11th attacked, always german civilists, US Soldiers and SS Soldiers died.
