Allot of airlines, especially in Asia, use 747's for short routes. One time I was Cathay Pacific and I was on the 747-400 from Hong Kong-Singapore, 3 hour flight. I guess it depends on rate of passengers going to each destination. Like my flight to Singapore was packed full, so that's why I guess Cathay Pacific used the 747.
Some Airlines use large planes for shorter routes, like United (UAL), they use a B777 to get from Denver to Chicago. Japan Airlines (JAL) uses a B747 to fly domestic routes within Japan. Singapore Airlines uses an A380 to get from Tokyo to Singapore. It's crazy, but because of the 'overflowing' amount of passengers, airlines have no other option.
But sometimes Saudia uses 777 for domestic routes in KSA, they use 777-200 From Jeddah to Medina and back. Saudia also did the 777-300ER Riyadh to Jeddah in 2018
