Excellent idea! I have been buying tactical bags for my ham gear off of Amazon, and most run anywhere from 10 bucks up to 32 dollars. I don't care about tacticool, other than molle is pretty sweet for lashing things together. I have a Goodwill within a mile of my house...may go check it out tomorrow.

I have that backpack from the 4:20 mark in the video in both foliage green and coyote brown. Bought the foliage green one at the PX at Camp Shelby, MS in 2009 - took it on a Caribbean vacation and on an Afghanistan "vacation." That pack held up remarkably well through many travels, and is still fully functional today. I use a toiletries bag to store my antennas, coax, spare connectors/adapters, etc., and the infamous "Bovke" case for my Xiegu X6100, both fit in the large back pocket. The middle pocket carries my two Talentcell brick battery packs, and the associated wall warts. The front top pocket carries a mini logbook and pens, and the front bottom pocket carries a bag with stakes and a very short hammer. I carry my DX Commander pole in hand, there is just no bag that will carry it. I love using the Rybakov antenna as it gives me access to every HF band and 6 meters in a vertical configuration that is so easy to setup and take down.
Great video, brother. I enjoyed it! Never overlook cheap thrift store items, you will always find something useful in there at a bargain!

Being resourceful is a great skill to have learned. Thanks for watching and the great input. If you feel comfortable, what year did you go on vacation? 09 here. Learning how to be resourceful with what was around you, was important. You take care, Brother.

Some of the tackle bags are super helpful for small components. Most aren't terribly affordable but once in awhile you'll find a wicked deal on a waterproof bag with storage for components. 🤙🏽

Several years ago, someone made waterproofing spray, in a can. It would waterproof any cloth material. Ie. Tents, tarps, cloths & backpacks. It was sold at Lowes Home Improvement. The downside was that it made the cloth stiff and rigid. I know people have used Scotch Guard, for years, to apply a waterproofing layer.

That one bag in the thumbnail looks like one of the range bags on the market. Radios (or other 'range accessories ') line up nicely across the Padded bottom section.

It is definitely a range bag (I love it for that). I have seen it sold under multiple names with different designs:
      The One I have - www.tidewe.com/products/tidewe-range-backpack-bag-carrier-range-pack?currency=USD&variant=37639141982367&Google%20Shopping&stkn=11e9cc7b2bf9&tw_source=google&tw_adid=&tw_campaign=20942072074&gad_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAjw4f6zBhBVEiwATEHFVp3pE25XgAtka7lTbAuhHXt_4DCVt1CnFg_Yb-Z9pGVECBT1CXPtpxoCGp4QAvD_BwE
I also saw it the other day at my local Pew Pew Store, under a different name (and slightly different design).
Great bags! Fits an Icom IC705 well :)

I live on Ziplock bags. I always throw a few into the thin laptop pocket or the water bladder pocket. They are also great for compressing a sweatshirt or something in a pinch or putting the radio into to protect it. I am still on the lookout for a bag to do POTA and SOTA. One of the ones I want and would love to see someone do a review on is that Eberlestock backpack for carrying a rifle. I think that would be awesome for carrying my 12m fiberglass pole. You really hit the nail on the head though with it depends on what you want to do with it. I think it is time that a ham RUclipsr create the perfect POTA/SOTA bag. Kickstarter? Good video.

You can always put small electronics, into waterproof locking lid containers. Used for food storage. Those are much lighter weight and clear. Versus a heavy, Pelican case, which offers padded protection. Even a ziplock bag works to keep stuff dry!

Thank You SrA....for your service and this great video. I hadn't even considered going to GoodWill to look for bags. What a great idea! I'd really like to get a small HF radio like the FT-891 so I can do some fun stuff that involves motorcycles and POTA/SOTA/QRP etc, and if I get a bag than I have to get a radio to go in it! Gotta go shoppin.....thanks again!!

Oh thanks! that was an old patch. I finished out as SSgt. Just kind of threw it on the bag. I do appreciate the kind gesture.
Definitely take a look at some Of those thrift stores and you might get real lucky. Good luck

@@HAMRADIODUDE I remember the days of those patches and hope I can still find one of mine. I retired in 2000 and can't remember exactly when we wore those, but I'm guessing it was the late 80s to early 90s sometime. Anyway, I just went to the closest Goodwill to my home but didn't have any luck this time. Still have lots to learn though, so there's still time to shop around the thrift stores and explore your channel while I figure it all out. 73

I'm a huge fan of the big one compartment (or one big primary compartment) filled with other containers approach. The inner bags or boxes can be specialized so that they meet the needs of their contents and I can mix and match what inner containers I need.

you should consider the mission darkness backpack too, its completely faradayed and black, perfect for your backup/pota setup for when the SHTF. i got one to keep my electronic backups in, so radios, antennas, laptop, chargers, hacking tools, antenna analyzer, batteries etc. bit pricey but is worth the outlay.

A fishing backpack, may be a good choice. They have many compartments for tackle boxes, and tools. They are usually water resistant. But are not cheap.
