Patti Smith - 25th Floor (live) [flawed intro] + Interview + Because the Night (live) [1978]

- [Mono] Two live performances taken from "The Old Grey Whistle Test", as broadcast on USTV, for "The Midnight Special". Includes a short interview by Lisa Robinson.
While the footage has some visual glitches, and the beginning of "25th Floor" is missing a few seconds, there did not seem to be any other version of this song on RUclips, so here it is, for better or worse. "Because the Night" appears elsewhere in better quality, but is included, as the original broadcast intended.
Patti...Respect & Love from Romania-Bucharest!
Thank You! ❤
She deserves the status of one of the most exciting rock performers on the planet. To me , she is up there with Jagger and Iggy in her ability to commit completely to the intensity of the moment and channel that energy....THAT is why the kids go crazy....they can FEEL it
Coming through her. Patti and I share the same birthday, maybe that's why I get her, Lol..
So glad the prophetess is still with us.
Jagger's always been an Act. It's never felt real.
Thanks for the magic in your words
She’s above them both
@@orianamejer346Agreed, Patti is above and beyond mere rock stardom..Just like when Gandalf spoke to Saruman at Orthanc:
"I think that I am quite beyond your reckoning..."
Lol!!
She gives those of us who are fearful and with no voice courage...and encouragement to express ourselves...
yes
G L O R I A !
I think her voice has grown even stronger as she aged.

Some of us discover Patti later in life and then we have the pleasure of reaching back into her early work. In this same year Patti appeared on Tom Snyder's "Tomorrow" show. That is one of my favorite interviews. Patti is at times lovably awkward and then she launches into a philosophical monologue. "This woman has real dimensions!" In a world of talentless wannabes and ditzy personalities Patti Smith is courageously authentic. I can listen to "Dancing Barefoot" over and over and it always makes me happy to hear her.
Dancing Barefoot is a big favourite of mine
The real mother of punk-rock-poetic!!! forever !!!!!and ever !!!!
Absolutely!!!
would German singer Nina Hagen be considered alongside her?
@@TheBobbymcd yes!!
I love Patti since the 70s, the most relevant artist alive!
I can't get enough of Patty Smith, past and present. She's an artistic genius, a badazz and the "Godmother of Punk" LOVE YOU PATTY!
You can’t get any more real than patti smith, thank you for sharing this
There is so much energy in her music and still today it sounds wonderful. She belongs to the best musicians, i've ever heard.
Patti Smith is the reason why I'm in a "punk" band

* We met in 1971 after my first poetry performance, Lenny accompanying me on electric guitar. Sandy Perlman was sitting cross legged on the floor , dressed in leather , Jim Morrison style.
After the performance , he told me I should front a rock n roll band but I just laughed and told him I already had a good job working in a book store."

I pray I'll get to see Patti one day!
I waited decades and finally saw her 3 months ago. 9/17/22
Incredible.

This is so good! The guitar tone at the start with her voice is incredible! I'd love to get the whole take from this show. Thanks for putting what you got up.
Glad you liked what there was to see & hear, and took the time to say so. Much appreciated :)

She’s my hero. Love Patti
I saw her in Austin TX many many years ago; I was in the front row and she gazed briefly at me and it was too strong way too strong I had to look away.
Great footage. I guess the reason the complete 25th Floor clip is never shown is the sh*t word.
Great interview, hadn't seen it before!
I first saw this performance and interview on Night Flight in the 70s. Patti was the real deal.
she so cool man
I love Patti’s guts - her courageous guts!

First Fe-male Rock Star
Janis,suzi quattro,grace slick
Patti is awsome,,not the 1st
@@1369buddy OK buddy I'll give U Grace Slick and of course Janis Joplin ... but Suzi ... wasn't she just a tad bit later ? .. mebbe not
Perhaps Patti woz the first Rock Chick who really didn't give a damn ... and really did transcend her gender ... just as happy to adopt the guise of male rocker in Gloria and Pirate Girl in Land/Horses
But then as U say there woz little leather clad Suzi blasting out Devil Gate Drive !!!!!
And on The West coast of The US we had Joan Jett and The Runaways !!!!
She’s fukn awesome
"I'm definitely into the future" yeah, loved it, keep on rocking dear Patti!!
She looks Pretty God to Me She looks Pretty Good
What was the flaw in the intro??
Rough tape edit left the intro to the song out, so it is incomplete [previous owner tried to use up space between recordings, and didn't stop the tape in time.
Noise!
Why didn't I heat about her till now? I like her more than Mick Jagger,. Well I never really cared for Mick's style. For musical poets, I preferred Leonard Cohen over Bob Dylan. She is a bit more like a cross between Mick Jagger and Bob Dylan. Her humanity is one of her greater assets, like Dylan, and Cohen. I'm pretty sure Jagger's a fairly kindly guy, but I just don't feel that part of him when he sings, say like I do with the Beatles. Rock and roll to me is more pre Beatles. There are more Rock and Roll songs inserted into the 6o's, 70's and early 80's than were actually produced by "bands". I know that was a naive sounding statement, but a lot of non-rock and songs were done by poets, balladeers, egomaniacs, creative geniuses musucally, or word-wise, but not all of it is rock and roll.
It looked to me, by Patti doing this song that her poetic ways were overtaken by REAL rock and roll.

I wonder what she thought of Wendy O Willaims & her crazy sometimnes considered violent stage antics, Wendy didnt come along till 78 but wonder what Patti thought iof her . Wendy made quite an impact.
I saw Wendy/The Plasmatics at CBGB's some time in the seventies.
She cut a guitar in half with a chainsaw.
I couldn't hear well for three days.
The Mideval Knight-charletin..

I never got it. I like Patti but I never considered her punk.
Really? For me Patti Smith defined the word Punk.
@starshinemoonbeamlight Patti is cool. I just thought it was an unfair label. I listened to so much good music in the 70's. Punk included Patti was just more to me anyway. Have you seen the TASCHEN book "Before Easter After"?
oggi venduta al potere
No girls play guitar the way you do ... It's not exactly demure
She looks like the lost Ramone sister whose music was a combination of The Doors and The Pretenders.
I enjoy her music but she has the opposite problem Prince has. She is viewed as more than what she is where Prince was never fully appreciated for his wide talents until his death.
When you think of the 60's and 70's it seems like women in music today have gone backwards. Some are good but they are not unique or pushing the envelope. Of course you could say that broadly about music today. This is probably why you hear a lot of 60's through 80's music, with a sprinkling of 90's, being played everywhere still.
I think you have got Prince and Patti round the wrong way but I appreciate that you are thinking about the music, even if we take a different view.
Her nose is smaller. Damn then, I’m headed for a real schnozz when I get older I guess
In old photos my nose looked larger. My face was thinner as a teen.👃
hate new fans🦀
who is this woman.......i am pretty much her age and i don't remember her during the 60 and 70's or after for that matter.....she is nobody and all of a sudden she gets some kind of award...............wow if i had any doubt this nails it the game they are feeding us is all rigged........think how much they change history confident nobody can contradict them....................excuse me punk was in much later years
Little Lulu you never heard of Patti? Where were you? She exploded when she went a bit commercial with because the night. Bruce Springsteen wrote it for her as far as I know. Punk emerged with a bang in what 76/77. I guess it just depends what kind of environment you are living in. There are lots of things going on now I wouldn’t have a clue about because I amnt following the media chain to see them or mixing with people who will ever make me aware of them. Doesn’t change the fact they are here and happening. Just not for me but I couldn’t say it was wrong because I wasn’t aware
You don’t know shit and your comment is embarrassing quite frankly. Good grief.
Patti Smith cannot sing!
lol, she plays one guitar. find a song lol that she plays. she fell of the stage. lol lol
horrid ==== ridiculous ===talentless=== she has never been any musical wonder though people treat her like she was a musical geninus junk
what talent do you have? fuckin L bro
When she sings it kind of reminds me of Nina Hagan way back in the 80's/90's.
