she and I are kindred spirits . I am also an artistic type who can relate to true expressive forms of art like what she does, and also Laurie Anderson, and (please dont be aghast) Yoko Ono, to a lesser extent. :) and Jim Morrison in a way, he was similar to Patti in his own way and thought himself much more a poet than a musician or rocker. I can really feel and connect with Pattis singing and movements, almost like they are my own. I can see how she connects to that and feels what she feels as she does the music, if that makes sense.
That keeping the money going is key. Bit stars like MGK and other around today who love to claim their “punk” status, are greedy and contribute nothing back to the communities they wish to be apart of.
I met her after Springsteen wrote her only hit, she was haughty & dismissive in her tailored velvet suit, a total contrast to her public image. A spiritual thief with a fur coat, what a fabulous oxymoron which reflects her true being. Bowie & The Kinks challenged gender stereotyping which was important in the early seventies, a bandwagon she quickly jumped on. She had a good voice & wrote a few catchy, controversial phrases but soon became banal with her empty mediocre faux mysticism. Most of her songs lacked substance evoking the need to pad early albums with soft obscure lyrics & pseudo intellectual ranting. I recall her when younger showing a rich BBC geek around NY talking crap in an annoying, nasal, childlike voice. When Kaye made her the vocalist for his band she became juvenile & attention seeking by being disruptive in interviews, perhaps that was her trite vision of rock'n'roll rebellion. Joni Mitchell is a true poet & was a thriving folk artist in the early seventies, adapting her style of music & insightful lyrical expression. Allegedly she had Blondie banned from CBJBs as she diverted attention, forced to move to England Harry soon eclipsed her musically with a string of hits in her own distinctive style. For decades Smith has been little more than a proxy award collector. To describe herself as a poet or painter is ludicrous.
I love Pattis music, but this comment gave me a different perspective on her. I guess she's admittedly like Jim Morrison in that way, or bob Dylan. we all remember when bob Dylan made his only poetry book tarantula it was received terribly. it all stems from them all being inspired by Allen Ginsberg, who was probably the weakest writer amongst the beat generation, but the most alike to that rock star archetype. Bowie is an underrated POET. {I enjoy everyone's art I listed here, since my personal standards aren't too high, but I think the best writers in music are Joni Mitchell, Lou Reed, Leonard Cohen.
She will forever be an icon
There's no money in poetry, but then again there's no poetry in money. Poets write because they have to...
This woman has changed my life in ways that I didn’t know was possible 💗
Patti Smith is the Poet Laureate of Punk Rock! :-)
I love Patti!

She's not broke anymore, and hasn't been for a very long time.
Fascinating 🙏
