On the one hand, I appreciate that In Flames finally did something to embrace their roots in melodic death metal that helped define an entire genre... But on the other hand, this wasn't the best way to go about honoring their legacy. The guitar frequencies are so scooped that Bjorn sounds like he's playing with his instrument hooked up to dual Metal Zone pedals. This mix is so bad it sounds like I made it. The original Clayman has a sound that some producers have been trying to figure out how to reproduce for fifteen years. This rerecorded version sounds like it was recorded at a Guitar Center. If nothing else, it makes me appreciate the mixing on the original that much more, and realize the problems In Flames has been having with music recently aren't limited just to writing.
You nailed it. I am definitely happy that they are FINALLY acknowledging their "roots" as Colony and Clayman are my 2 favorite "extreme metal" albums ever made...but yes...on the other hand, what the fuck is with the production? Also the guitar bridge thing in the middle was, to me, so anticlimactic and the synth was added to fill sound which could have been fixed by a better guitar tone...same with the solo (which is now harmonized...lol). Idk, all I hope is that they don't get discouraged with all the negative feedback (because there is SOO MUCH of it) and harness the fact that THEY KNOW how good their old material is. Meaning...do something like a "Throwback Tour" or something. Where they only play songs up to the era of Clayman or Reroute. I like everything up to Playground. But jesus, they really dropped the ball recently and it sounds like they have lost their passion, and just doing this to make money (which it is their job so they do need income of course). ON A POSITIVE NOTE, Ander's screams live sound much better these days than they did during 2006ish when he was hammered all the time lol.
The band I listened to longer and more intense than any other in my life and I can't believe you guys managed to sound 5 times better a lifetime ago than today

Wtf are in flames doing. They needed to hang it up like 20 years ago. In flames may have defined a genre in the late 90s, but they are doing a great job fucking their legacy up.
It's an alright song. It's their song after all and they can do as they choose with it, original version wasn't replaced by this one so you can go and listen to it and appreciate them for recording the original. Best
Anders literally said this was just for fun the difference is George Lucas doesn't let you see the originals, these are just bonus tracks again just for fun, people act like this denies them access to the originals
I've been listening to you guys for 25 years. I swallowed my pride and backed your transitions when you wanted to explore with "A Sense of Purpose" and "A Playground Fading". I went back to the older albums when Anders's vocals just couldn't do what he wanted in "Sirens" and "Battles". I regained hope when "I, The Mask" was released, because somewhere deep inside I was hoping that you were travelling back to that raw sound you once had. I was not expecting you to time travel and undo the beauty that was your old works. Please, leave the past alone. Focus on what has still not been made. Or not. I'm just a commenter on RUclips and a fan, what would I know...
Hey! A sense of purpose is what got me into this band, still one of my favorite cds ever. Granted I never really went past the previous cd of theirs so, all this stuff before then I never really listened to.
Yeah, I have been listening to them for around 23 years myself.. They were always my go to band..and I always said they were my favorite..but now..This is just sad..they should have never gone back to corrupt these old amazing songs we love... Need to go listen to the old one so I forget this exists... Good luck and stay safe to everyone reading this!
It's, sadly, exactly what I expected it would be. So long as the original recording remains available its fine. I don't have to listen to this one again.
This demonstrates the impact of the studio, producer and mixing on songs and albums. Though this is a really great, legendary song, it ultimately lacks the aggression, urgency and EXHILARATION of the early '00s metal scene.
I know that feeling. Grats dude! (for me it was Dreams from the cranberries, which is even less cool, but i was a child back then) Pinball map one of the best songs of their last acceptable album. If i liked synthesizers i would listen to techno,... but i'm not angry, They made some of the best music i ever listened to in the early years, nothing can take that away.
I know these re-recorded songs aren't really being received well, but this is easily my favorite so far. The original is amazing, but this is a fresh take on the classic. I really like it. Good job guys.
Please In Flames, if any of you reads this (which i doubt)! Go back to the era with great solos heavier distortion and more screams. I don't mind singing, but this version of In Flames is like a light version of the metal band i used to listen to.
I dont mind them re-record their old songs if they want to. They DO sound different but that's somewhat a part of the point. Its different equipment, people and state of mind. I think it's cool they re-imagined the songs! I think both versions are good and if you like the older one, nothing stops you from listening to it...
you're right, people change and ofc their music will change too... but sadly, in flames is full of crybabies who keeps saying "in flames died in this old album" or the classic "they're not what they used to be so this modern songs are all bads"... they cant accept that every composer needs to change their music and always try new stuffs, otherwise they will be trapped in the same style and end up being repetitive...

Don't know what "darker metal" means in this context though. In Flames has always been upbeat, real sugary rays of sun with your mom type of metal. Not that it's a bad thing, I adore Subterranean and Whoracle.
He just went full pop my friend. I was getting worried after the album sounds of a playground fading and unfortunately I was right. But then again, in 2008 when I listened to a sense of purpose people were already complaining on how they preferred the "old" in flames
The guitars just feel off, like they belong to a totally different song, and the vocals sound like Anders was forced to sing, like if he's reading but not actually singing with emotions put in there - it's even possible to hear the lack of pauses and stuff like that... Dunno, sounds way too linear, but yeah, in general, it's a pretty nice song, if the quality of the original is not considered (very bad mixing in this one). I was expecting some growls during the low tones part tho
And they changed my favourite riff at 2:20... Whyy?? It was pure sweet metalness with pinch harmonics and all... :/ (No need to tell me to go and listen to the older songs if I like those better.. I get it, but you still can't deny that I'm right :D Peace y'all)
When the song started. I thought they were doing a lofi style intro and the full production would hit when the first verse started. Boy was I wrong. Video was sick though.
IF: "You thought clayman 2020 was a step back? Well, check Pinball Map!" The guitars sound like 8-bit, the drums sound like recorded through a wool blanket, and the chorus backings sound like that Indian autotune guy. The Verse vocals are okay. Probably due to the fact that they sound more like the original than the rest of the mix... Hope the IF guys read YT comments. If so: GUYS, PLEASE NEVER DO SOMETHING LIKE THIS AGAIN, PLEASE!!
When Pink Floyd played live, and redid, "Comfortably Numb", I was like, "Wow, I like this new version better." That's because I heard it first, then I heard the old version, and was like, "Nooo, new version is better." That's going to happen to the Clayman re-recording..a choice will be made,( and even those these versions are somewhat similar ) one version will most likely have to be killed off within the heart, so the other may survive. I still don't think anything on Clayman needed to be redone. I'm not always into bands re-recording stuff, because usually, everyone will choose the first version they heard. This song was already in your heart, it is dear to you, and the band comes along and they're like, "Hey, I'm going to turn something you love into a total stranger..isn't that awesome." When bands re-record some songs, ( especially when they are close to the same ), I keep imagining the debate, "You heard Pinball Maps?".."No sir, I'm not old like you, I don't listen to The WHo?"..."No, not Pinball Wizard, Pinball Maps, have you heard??don't worry, it's totally new again, re-recorded by "In Flames"..."Ohh Yeah I have heard it, it has such a clean sound, it's awesome. My favorite part was the little trance thing they did in the song, I reminded me of Muse. ".."Have you heard the original?"..."There's an original?"..."Yeah, it's a little more aggressive.".."Ohh, that..I..uhmmm..I don't know if I can handle that..."..."You should at least check it out."..."No, that's ok, I mean, I'm already comfortable with this version."..."Well, maybe you should give it a try, and then, if it's too much for you, you can retreat back to your Imagine Dragon CD."..."I don't have CD's, it's on my Iphone."..."Well, did the radiation on that Iphone kill off one of your balls...", and it just gets ugly from here. Bands need to stop re-recording us into these conflicts.
The original sounds like it was made with the intention of unleashing fury in the listener's face. This re-recording sounds like a lifeless live in studio and maybe it should have been just that , a live in studio.
I love how they included their old melodic death albums into this music vid. The Jesters fortress from The Jester Race, the faceless woman from Whoralce, the cyborg from Colony and the new Clayman.
Nuclear Blast, please, never pay any money to a band to re-record a classic album. There are many bands with fresh new ideas. And send In Flames to a bar, they're sober.
Ok, the sound is very controversial, though I like the vocals, but I actually like the video. Has anyone picked out all the Easter eggs? The main characters are Whoracle, Clayman, the Jester. There also was a reference to Satellites and Astronauts (a rather thick one, tho), the castle resembles the one from The Jester Race album cover. But who was that multi-ball metal dude? And is there anything else?
I've been listening to In Flames since the release of Colony and I gotta say I love this! I didn't expect it to be so nice after the rerecording of the song Clayman. I dig how the rerecorded Only For The Weak sounds too!
Guys...why? Pinball Map was one of your most exemplary songs. The drum fills, the bassy tones; the straight up OOMPH. You stripped it all away for the sake of overproduction and I simply don't understand.
Why are all the instruments / whole song so flat? It really annoys me. I love guitars and i love songs with high dynamic range. These flat out songs ... make me cry :(
Conspiracy theory: In Flames re-record their classic material with confusingly poor production in an attempt to make the new stuff sound better in comparison
It would make more sense if they'd re-record the whole album instead of remaking four songs as bonus and replace the old versions on streaming platforms.
There is 2 thing i believe it is happens here. 1 they wont be of with Nuclear and have deal with maybe couple albums left so they just wann to this faster and dont worry with recodring new stuff. They have deale which say they need to relese new album in this time but they dont have new material so we got this
The-Jesterhead Of course it is meant to sound better. That is why you re-record. You have better technology to record now than in the early 2000s. The problem is that this does not sound better
@@Bugge5001 its a newer touch! Re record of their new sounds and ideas! Still the old is there if you want to listen 🤷♂️ always people crying like babies.. the remastered is coming next month with the original sound. And music is a taste thing! Everyone does not have to like it 👍 ps these songs is only bonus songs for the remastered. I knew this would newer be better in any ways because the original is already a masterpiece 🤷♂️ if you go in with a mindset that this should be better than what can i say 😅
Smth the band has said various times is that they used to record songs with like 6 guitar tracks and it was imposible to replicate live, this is a lil more stripped down so it's closer to the live sound.
It's like... there's no bottom end, and there's way less distortion in the guitars... oh god I just got to the bridge before the solo... why??? This is one of my favorite songs. I... what???
*scrolls through comments, is proved right If these guys want to try something new they can. They got different producers and mixers for these, so yea, no shit, it’s going to sound different. I swear if they don’t try something new, the “fans” accuse them of being tired and stagnant. If they do something new those same “fans” accuse them of being a different band and abandoning their original sound. Anders did a great interview on i the mask, to paraphrase: he doesn’t give a shit what you think, if the band likes it, that’s all he cares about.
Cool to see modern takes on the older stuff. Even if some fans can't see the neatness of it, it's like.. they're unappreciative little.. bastards. Ungrateful that you're still going and having fun. I for one, am so fking glad you're still making music and having fun with the old songs. Kick ass, forever In Flames.
I think the same way, even though I don't really like the new recording of pinball map I don't automatically have to listen to it instead of the old one. I personally love the new version of clayman and tbh I kinda have forgotten it between other In Flames songs from that album. Also if it would sound the same it wouldn't be re-recorded
@@Bootleg2.-nv7zc Yeah, to support the band for like 30 years, buy records and tickets for shows, put them where they are now just to see them drive Jespers vision of the band been driven off the rails and rerecord one of monumental melodeath albums with this sterile, terrible production..a real living garbage these people are.
@@mVujic92 Well the originals still exist. If people don't appreciate that the band wants to have a little fun, then just don't listen to the re-recorded versions of the already-great song's. I like the older stuff more but I appreciate the effort they put in and it is interesting to see how the older songs would sound if they were made now. I do wish they would make more songs the way they used too but either way I am happy just listening to what we already have.
@@Bootleg2.-nv7zc It ain't about about having fun, it's about trying to be relevant even after the last nail has been struck into coffin. Will we ever see At The Gates rerecord Slaughter of the Soul? Or DT albums like Skydancer or Gallery? We won't, and there's a reason for it. If any of albums In Flames has put out since Come Clarity has been released under any name but In Flames, noone would give a fuck abut them, and this rerecording of Clayman is one more proof that In Flames in nothing more but an empty shell of what it once was.
This is the song that got me interested in In Flames back in 2000. All I can say is NO! No no no. I never thought I'd say this about In Flames, but this is junk. I have to listen to the original, just to get this out of my head.
Totally with you, Chris! Pinball Map was the first song I heart of In Flames and it took my heart by storm back in those days. That was great stuff; 2020 version is just a simple disappointment from start to end. Let`s be happy, that we were lucky enough to hear the original song in 2000! Cheers!
it would've been so much better if they're just remastered properly original album, cause vocals there can barely be heard,so as Reroute to remain and Soundtrack to your escape albums
It's recognizable as Pinball Map. That's the nicest thing I have to say about this.

I am definitely happy that they are FINALLY acknowledging their "roots" as Colony and Clayman are my 2 favorite "extreme metal" albums ever made...but yes...on the other hand, what the fuck is with the production? Idk, all I hope is that they don't get discouraged with all the negative feedback (because there is SOO MUCH of it) and harness the fact that THEY KNOW how good their old material is. Meaning...do something like a "Throwback Tour" or something. Where they only play songs up to the era of Clayman or Reroute. I like everything up to Playground. Dude 😂 „...sounds like I made it.“ killed me haha
They use the Behringer Eurodesk straight into the board with no external preamps, only the built in ones if I remember correctly
The band I listened to longer and more intense than any other in my life and I can't believe you guys managed to sound 5 times better a lifetime ago than today
Please put the old version to this nice clip
I loveD this song... I will go back to the old version to love it again
The raw 5150 guitar sound which defined the Gothenburg style replaced by this lighter and clearer tone bothers me.
It's not even lighter or cleaner.
It's just plain dull and sleep-inducing
Its the mixing. The tone is similar to how they always played live and likely on the album. The mix is just different, putting the guitars in the background and not compressing them.
This change in sound likely has more to do with the engineer used than the band. Though they did sign off on it in the end.
I kind of dig it, but it is very different.

It seems that life's so fragile

Early morning moments

But soon it's over and I return to dust
As I try to be
Everything and everyone

When bands re-record some songs, ( especially when they are close to the same ), I keep imagining the debate, "You heard Pinball Maps?".."No sir, I'm not old like you, I don't listen to The WHo?"..."No, not Pinball Wizard, Pinball Maps, have you heard??don't worry, it's totally new again, re-recorded by "In Flames"..."Ohh Yeah I have heard it, it has such a clean sound, it's awesome.
I guess they thought the original sounded just a bit too good.
Nuclear Blast, please, never pay any money to a band to re-record a classic album. There are many bands with fresh new ideas. And send In Flames to a bar, they're sober.
Son: Mom can we get *Pinball Map*
Mom: We have *Pinball Map* at home.
*Pinball Map* at home:
This sounds really anemic compared to the original.
The Multi-Ball dude looks like the Cyborg from Colony's cover art.
It was a cover of my band. Best memory.
Clayman.exe has stopped working.
Why are all the instruments / whole song so flat? It really annoys me. I love guitars and i love songs with high dynamic range. These flat out songs ... make me cry :(
Nuclear Blast. Ya'll shouldn't encourage this behavior.
How can make money if not???? Hahaha shame on every person who involved this shit to come out
Love this!!!! 🔥🔥🔥
I hope you never re-record some albums like "Whoracle" or "Colony". You made a mess with this cool old song.
+++++
Colony's 20 year anniversary has passed thankfully
Used to be my favorite band, I even have The Tokyo Showdown Jester mask tattooed on my leg. WTF
They better not ruin Lunar Strain.
@Doctor Aven in 1999, when they were already a reference of Gothenburg's style, not that shitty metalcore band.
Keep complaining about complainers 🤣🤣
Please don’t destroy the music. This disc re-recorded is realy sad 😢
In Flames. The only band that can ruin their own creations.
I couldn't lose THAT much hearing from the time when original was released... wtf is that pillow smothered sound?
I remember when they were my favorite band, by Sound Track to Your Escape I hated them, life is crazy
Conspiracy theory: In Flames re-record their classic material with confusingly poor production in an attempt to make the new stuff sound better in comparison
why does that even make a tiny bit of sense lmao
It would make more sense if they'd re-record the whole album instead of remaking four songs as bonus and replace the old versions on streaming platforms.
There is 2 thing i believe it is happens here. 1 they wont be of with Nuclear and have deal with maybe couple albums left so they just wann to this faster and dont worry with recodring new stuff. They have deale which say they need to relese new album in this time but they dont have new material so we got this
@@jacekbrodka2264 they had this and that 8bit album too. there is 2 "new" albums.
Jacek Bródka I think royalties have to do with it too, they did Jesper dirty with this re-recording
When the new music video is better than the re-recorded song.
The original still sounds better than this.
Yeah this sounds horrible af
Go listen to the old one. I heard it’s still available 🤓
Its not meant to be better.. an original is an original... go listen to it 🤷♂️
The-Jesterhead Of course it is meant to sound better.
Dont try to reason with the horde...they already have their pitchforks and torches ready to go. 🙄🙄🙄
Guy Raffa Preach man hahahaha guess it’s just me trying to shed some light in this comment section
i heard this song live two times 2006 and 2007 and it sounded x10 better than this.
I played this to my Pitbull. He's a Chihuahua now.
lol
Hahahah believe it....its ultra gheyness
It's like... there's no bottom end, and there's way less distortion in the guitars... oh god I just got to the bridge before the solo... why??? This is one of my favorite songs. I... what???
Why it sounds like bad cover of original pinball map?
*scrolls through comments, is proved right
If these guys want to try something new they can.
I agree, i like this version maybe a bit more than the original.
People are acting as if they removed the old versions from the internet.
Yes, thts why jeppe, daniel and peter leaves the band. Differences in musical direction
Same here! A bunch of ungreatful pieces of living garbage these days. I love IF and will likely never stop loving it.
In flames for grandmother...
Why this cool song was St Angerized?
3:17 accurate representation of 'remastering' clayman
re-anything; they're butchering it
This is the song that got me interested in In Flames back in 2000. All I can say is NO! No no no. I never thought I'd say this about In Flames, but this is junk. I have to listen to the original, just to get this out of my head.
Right?! It's my favorite song on the album. I can't say I like the re-recording. Cool video though
Totally with you, Chris! Pinball Map was the first song I heart of In Flames and it took my heart by storm back in those days. That was great stuff; 2020 version is just a simple disappointment from start to end. Let`s be happy, that we were lucky enough to hear the original song in 2000! Cheers!
Amazing as always
it would've been so much better if they're just remastered properly original album, cause vocals there can barely be heard,so as Reroute to remain and Soundtrack to your escape albums
They've done that too
First time listening a cover from the same band..maybe that was the idea at the end!
