Jötunheim has a lot of mountains and valleys. It's not cold, like Niflheim. Hel is supposedly a region within Niflheim. And Vanaheim is the home of the Vanir, not the elves...
At least he didn’t call it Helheim instead of Hel lol
@@sethwright8870 Hel and Helheim are used interchangeably. What's your point?
@@shadowthehedgehog181 Well, if I’m right, it’s never called Helheim in the mythology, just Hel, and Helheim was just something modern media like GOW came up with to make it sound cooler, or not like Hell, that’s my point
@@sethwright8870 True, I mean, Hel is the origin for the name Hell, used in other religions today. The hell described in Christianity, is the hell that originates from Judism, when the vikings started to become Christianian (together with the rest of Europe) they took the word Hel from the mythology and used it as the word for Christian Hell. GOW might have thought that using Hel, would have made people interpret it as Christian Hell instead of the Mythological one, therefore they added heim to it. GOW is a commercial use of mythology, not a factual one (in terms of being accurate).
@sethwright8870 from what I've seen it's called helheim in a few places outside that games ties but I may be wrong
Vanaheim is the realm of the Vanir gods. Freya and Frey are from Vanaheim. 🤔
I agree with you
Correct me if I’m wrong but I think that’s only in god of war, not the actual mythology but I could be wrong
@@brudderrem I haven't played God of War. But in mythology, Freya is the price paid to end the Aesir/ Vanir conflict. Frey too I think, but it's been a while since I read that story. 🤔
@@geffeternal741 Freyja is the price to pay to end the war, and I’ve also looked more into it and you are right but are Freyja and Freyr both offspring of Njord like in the game?
@@brudderrem they're twins, if memory serves right. 🤔
Can't remember what god Frey represents as, but Freya is Norse counterpart to Aphrodite with a little Athena/ Artemis mixed in. 😊
Depending on who you ask and either the folklore or mythology, there are also pocket dimensions and pocket realms within The World Tree. The Wellsprings of Knowledge, which are three separate wells, are three such pocket realms that are mentioned. Mímisbrunnr is the wellspring at the foot of Yggdrasil, where Odin sacrificed his right eye in order to obtain all the wisdom of the cosmos. There may be in fact several more realms we may possibly do know about because much of Old-Norse texts are gone or untranslatable.
Some of the realms/subrealms that I've discerned from reading the Prose Edda are:
· Iron Wood (translation) which is a land described to be adjacent to Midgard occupied by giantesses and wolves. Could be a part of Jotunheim though.
· Rán's realm, a place at the bottom of the sea ruled by the goddess Rán who takes all those who die from drowning.
· Þrúðheimr, which is described very briefly as the realm in which Thor calls home, or the "World of Strength". Perhaps there was a belief at some point that Thor was distinct enough from the rest of the Pantheon that he would have his own realm to rule over.
Also Alfheim is actually described as being "In Heaven" as well, so it could be a subrealm of Asgard or it could be on the same level as Asgard on the world tree. In a metaphorical sense.
😮❤Y'all should make a book or a video with this stuff in it!
Let me fix:
Midgard, the relm of mortals
Alfheim, the relm of elfs
Jotunheim, the relm of giants
Svartalfheim/nidavellir, the relm of dwarves
Helheim, the relm of the dead
Muspelheim, the relm of fire giants
Niflheim, the relm of ice giants
Asgard, the relm of the aesir gods
Vanaheim, the relm of the vanir gods
thank you
Valhalla?
@@Endermanmo Valhalla is within asgard. Asgard is regarded as a perfect paradise, which is why the most honorable warriors go there when they die
Alfheim is probably a location within Asgard, just like Valhalla and Folkvangr.
Muspelheim and Niflheim are primordial realms that merged, creating Ymir, whose body was used to create Midgard, so Muspelheim and Niflheim don't count towards the total because they don't exist anymore.
Helheim and Niflheim are probably the same place.
Your list is missing Okolnir, Urd's Well, Ægir's Hall and Ránasalr (which may or may not be the same place), and Útgard.
But I'm gonna pull back the curtain: no one knows what the Nine Realms are because they were never fully listed. And "Nine" probably didn't mean "exactly 9" but more like "a bunch."
The Nine Realms are more like "the Seven Seas" than a Top 10 list.
@@Galimeer5 just here to clear up some confusion. There are no nine realms, its all mythology and folklore, stories passed down around the campfire over centuries about powerful gods and mischievous creatures, all held together by magic. This means that no two accounts of these stories are ever going to be the same. But that doesnt mean there aren't similarities between all the stories: loki was the God of mischief, Odin was the allfather, and the gods were selfish and believed themselves to be better than everyone else (most of them anyways). That means that Asgard was seen as a kind of holy land, and no mortal was ever permitted within its walls without specific permission from Odin, and that includes the elves, who, just like the dwarves, humans, or the giants, had their own realm to reside in. Each realm was created for each race by Ymir to keep peace and balance. This means that if there isn't a specific race tied to the realm you're talking about, it probably isn't a realm, and vise versa. If there is a name for the place that one specific race resides in and none else, it's a realm. Thanks for giving me an excuse to talk about one of my favorite subjects.
Helheim isn't like hell, its the afterlife for those who either didn't have an honourable death or life as a warrior. Isn't a place of punishment
Yeah. The place of punishment is Midgard. Hard times create strong people.
I was about to say WHY IS HEL SO FUCKING RED!!!@
100% agree with you. It sucks that people always try to compare helheim to the Christian hell. When they are so completely different.
@@B1_1_9_7_5especially since most have described it as being cold ish and just kinda empty like a dug grave.
Finally i understood where tolkien got his inspiration from. For lord of the the rings and the hobbit

Jotunheimen is a real place in Norway
You left out the most interesting aspect of hel in Norse mythology, that it is freezing cold. In most religions/mythologies, hell or the bad afterlife was usually explained to be burning hot. It was usually described as hot, because the origins of the mythologies/religions came from countries who could occasionally suffer from drought and other things related to heat. In Norse Mythology, Hel was cold, because they would suffer from bad harvests (due to cold weather) and other things related to cold. To sum it all up, Hel is one of the very few mythological and religious interpretations of the negative afterlife, which is defined by extreme cold.
it’s explained in the christian bible too that hell is actually a cold and dark place. not burning hot like hollywood would have u believe
Yeah which is why it was very interesting to see other interpretations of the Christian/jewish hell where the center where the fallen lucifer rested would be frozen over mean while the other levels we often times scorching or bog like, honestly any uncomfortable creepy and overall bad environmental seeing you can find some depiction that someone made of it being an aspect of hell
The image of svartalfheim is straight from God of war 😂
I see Kratos on the background whit his axe 🤣🤣🤣
Vanaheim is home to the Vanir gods NOT Elves(although some live there) the
Vanir gods are a race of LONG lived super-humans just like the Aesir worshipped by the Norse Midgardians..they are basically the same race descended from the first Norse god Buri that branched off and settled in Vanaheim
Vanaheim is the home of the Vanir gods, and all elves live in Alfheim. Helheim is the land of the dead for those who die of old age, disease, accidents, or who are executed as criminals. Those who die in glorious battle are picked up by the valkyries and taken to one of two places: either Valhalla to serve Odin come Ragnarok, or Folkvangr to serve Freya. So far the only ones you got right were Asgard, Midgard, Muspelheim, Niflheim, Svartalfheim/Nidvalir, and Jotunheim. That might technically be a passing grade but it’s still piss poor
He even got Jotunheim wrong as the realm has mountains and valleys. It's not cold like in the Thor films.
No one has a correct list of "the Nine Realms" because a correct list doesn't exist. The Nine Realms are never fully listed in any of the original sources so no one knows what they are or if there even are 9.
Think of "the Seven Seas." If you put together a list of every body of water that was once considered one if them, you'd have a list of way more than 7 and most of them would actually be tributaries or lakes. Same thing with the Nine Realms -- a perfect, clean, undisputed list doesn't exist because it can't exist because there are way more than 9 and what constitutes a Realm is never clear.
Also Vanaheim is not peaceful, it has suffered many long lasting wars with Asgard
@@jimmydelacruz nobody ever said Vanaheim was peaceful, where the fuck did you get that idea?
@@brianvance1178 maybe from the f****** video we're all watching and commenting on, genius
Svartalhiem Is also home to the dark Elves as the Translation of its name is literally "Dark Elf Home" and Nidavellir is where the realm of the Dwarves

this information isnt correct If you are interested in norse mythology pls do your research
@@ohmyitztoni1301 was the aggressive tone intended?
@@bigmanjesus8881 I'm sorry if you thought there was an aggressive tone there wasn't meant to be I was just trying to say that if they want information on paganis/ Norse mythology to do research I'm a Norse pagan and I'm still learning things there is so much to learn about it your not going to learn it from a video with incorrect information
Loved the art. What about Valhalla and Folkvang?
Can you do this, but for the Egypt mythology?
Will you please do the entire Celtic mythology?
Vanaheim is the realm of the Vanir class of gods, not the elves. Alfheim is the realm of the elves. Freyr is sometimes said in the mythology to be lord of Alfheim though, and he is a member of the Vanir, so maybe that’s where the confusion comes from.
Here to read all the "Um, actually..." comments about how this list is dumb and wrong.
To the uninitiated, the "Nine Realms" are never fully listed in any of the original sources on Norse Mythology and those sources are often self-contradictory or offer a total realm count of way more than nine so no one knows what all nine realms actually are.
More importantly, 9 seems to be one of those special numbers -- Heimdall has nine mothers, Thor takes nine steps before Jörmungandr's venom kills him during Ragnarök, Odin hangs on Yggdrasil for nine days to learn about runes because he's actually a total nerd, Rán -- mother of the waves -- has nine daughters, etc...
Point is, nine was probably their version of "several" in that it doesn't mean a specific number. How much is several? More than "a couple," less than "a dozen" I guess?
So, trying to make a clean list of "The Nine Realms" is as easy as making a list of "The Seven Seas." Go ahead, try it. You're in for a headache.
Hel is thw goddess helheim from my memory is a cold swamp
Most of the realm pictures from God of war, Ragnarok and 2018
svatralhim is the land of dark elves, dwarfs are from Niðavellir which is sometimes in svatralhim but when it's not then hel is in niflheim it depends on the depiction
I love the mythology thanks for the video, Blessed Be.
this isnt correct if you want to learn more you have to do your own research

Let's collectively elevate the RUclips universe. I firmly believe every budding creator has the potential to create something big. Don't give up, all great things take time. Believe in yourself, persist in the grind, and have an inspiring day!

Muspelhiem, Hel and Nifleheim are different sectors of hell. I’m for certain
There are some errors in this video. Jötunheim isnt cold, and Vaneheim is the realm of the Venir gods.
This clearly shows the influence of norse mythology in LOTR.
And yet we watch all these movies knowing in our heart everything is a possibility when your a kid when in all reality IT IS

I SAW KRATOS IN SVARTALFHEIM
I think we will still see In the future of god of war in another game in Norse Mythology the King Beowulf and Siegfried/Sigurd in the future having connection with the dragons that released in the 1st game Enter more news Valkyries to the game and their realm And also others Creatures like:
the Kraken Which may or may not be Durlin's baby octopus and maybe he will appear in the future as another creature,The mysterious Wolf Horodviltnir and the wild boar from Freyr Gullinbursti and also from Valhalla Saehrimnir + Thor's Goats and Odin's Horse
I really want to see these Creatures and others Gods and Kings of this Mythology that have not yet been explored Just like Valhalla and the realm of the Valkyries were never shown only mentioned Who out there also thinks about this And what will still happen ? 🤔🙏🥺 like and Bye!
Svartalfheim is the realm of dark elves. It’s pretty easy transition dude
Now when I hear about Norse mythology all I remember is god of war thanks Kratos
Who notice the pictures of vanaheim and Alfheim came from god of war ragnarök
I learned most of this from god of war Ragnarok
Btw hellheim is a location in nifelheim

Odin watching the midgardian sending more men and children to kill him after he blows up 1/3 of Europe
(The indomitable Human spirit wasn't a myth)
Most of the images are from god of war 4
Svartalfheim: the home of dark elves (dark elves = dwarves in norse mythology)
Jotunheim: Realm of the giants
Alfheim:Realm of the light elves
Midgard:Realm of the mortals
Vanaheim:Realm of the vanir gods( more focused on magic)
Asgard: Realm of the aesir( more focused on power)
Helheim: Realm of those who didnt die in battle
Muspelheim: Realm of fire
niflheim: Realm of the cold and just a shitty place to live overall
new insult: I think you should head over to midgard, cuz your mid.
so....do giants come from Niflheim or Jotenheim?
Nobody's gonna talk about kratos in svartalfheim
My man forgotten about Valhalla

Isn't Vanaheim the realm of Vanir Gods. Alfheim is the realm of light and dark elves.
Nothing like getting more wrong than right in a one minute video.
