Today we’re continuing our journey on Alaska Airlines' famous milk run. In the last episode we left off in Juneau, Alaska (JNU). Today, we pick back up there, as we continue to the largest city in the United States. That's the largest city by land area, not population. In fact, this city has less than 10,000 year round residents. Today we're flying to Sitka, Alaska (SIT). Last week I said that Juneau was the most beautiful city I'd ever visited. Well, Sitka sure gives Juneau a run for its money. The views on this flight are somehow even better than the views on the last flight, which frankly, I didn't think was possible. As I just mentioned, Sitka is the largest city in the United States, covering over 2,870 square miles. To put that into perspective, Phoenix, which I've often heard quoted as the "largest US city" only covers 516 square miles. Sitka is situated on the west side of Baranof Island and the south half of Chichagof Island in the Alexander Archipelago of the Pacific Ocean. The runway is literally sitting in the ocean. I felt like we we landing on an aircraft carrier. It's also worth noting that this is where we switch from AS66 to AS62. There are multiple flights on the "milk run." After reaching Juneau, AS66 flies directly to Seattle. To continue to other small Alaskan cities, you must change flights in Juneau. It is not possible to do the entire milk run on one flight number. Anyways, this flight was breathtaking from start to finish! I told you these flights only get better as we go. So sit back, relax, and enjoy our fourth segment on the milk run.

I plan to. I don't know when, but it's on my list. I was looking at going back in September, but the weather gets significantly more... rainy in September. It's a lot of expenses to go up and maybe get rain on every flight.

Love seeing all those mountains. I’ve wondered where the term “milk run” comes from. Can you clarify that?
Sure. So, a lot of these small cities in Alaska are only accessible by air and boat, and those that are accessible by roads may only be reachable during the summer months. These roads are also not like the “roads” we have in the 48 lower states. Driving these roads often takes a substantially longer time to get from point A to B. For example, Sitka and Ketchikan, which are both on the milk run, are technically accessible to each other by roads/ferries, but that journey takes nearly 20 hours to drive, even though they are only 183 miles apart. In contrast, the flight is roughly 20 minutes. So, the term “milk run” comes from years ago when there was even less infrastructure, when these flights were literally the only lifeline that these communities had to the outside world. Everything that they needed, including milk, was delivered to them on these flights. Over the years, the flights have changed a bit. Alaska Airlines now runs dedicated cargo flights and dedicated passenger flights. At some point in the past they used combination aircraft, that were half passenger half cargo. Regardless, even today, these flights are still one of the only ways that people can easily get in and out of these cities.

Thanks my friend. Believe it or not, this was not my shortest commercial flight ever. A lot of my island hopping flights in Hawaii have been shorter, both in time and distance. My shortest commercial flight was actually unplanned. After diverting to Springfield, Missouri (SGF) after a failed landing attempt in Joplin, Missouri (JLN), we sat out the storms and boarded back up, with a new flight flight number to fly the 62 miles back to JLN. The flight took 18 minutes, and that included the taxi times. A lot of people time their flights by how long they were in the air. I time them by how long the door of the aircraft is closed. After all, you're still on that flight, even when taxiing. So, in reality, the actual in air time of that flight was like 9 minutes. To give some perspective. This flight from JNU-SIT covered 95 miles, and a flight from Kahului, Hawaii (OGG) to Kona, Hawaii (KOA) is 84 miles. As always, thanks for watching!

Apparently,JNU has the capability of the paranormal--that Alaskan flight doing the pushback vanished without any gasps from the passengers! :) Noticed that the pilot pulled back slightly on takeoff power,simply incredible views on takeoff,this is definitely NOT Joplin! :) The cruise altitude must have not been much more than 10,000 ft, I heard the engines reach cruise thrust shortly after the cabin announcement. Looking at all that water between the two cities,the fishing must be plentiful but would not want to experience ditching the aircraft,the water temp would be VERY chilly! Noticed you changed your seat for this part of the milk run--any extra charge? Don't know about the -700 series but know that the -900 series does offer a 'premium economy' section ahead the wing--so far, who has the edge on scenery--Hawaii or Alaska? At JNU,waiting for pushback(why the long delay?)noticed the wing guy simply leaning on the baggage loader,looking impatient and bored--guessing there was an Alaskan cargo flight arriving in the background,interesting to watch the various a/c moving about. Being that JNU isn't far from Canada,if Alaskans want to drive to the lower 48,they would have to pass through BC just to get to Washington state--being that Canada is closed to US citizens,how does Canada handle Americans just passing through?
It's Alaska's new cloaking technology haha. As for the seat. Yes, there would typically be an extra charge for most passengers. However, since I have Oneworld status, and Alaska is now part of Oneworld, I can select those seats for free with my status. If you don't have Alaska or Oneworld status they do cost extra. As for the scenery. Both Alaska and Hawaii have breathtaking scenery. And I LOVE Hawaii. I'd live there if I could. But.... Alaska wins the scenery battle. The sheer scale of everything in Alaska was just unbelievable. Both are well worth visits. The long waits for pushback seemed to be a common theme on all the milk run segments. I just didn't always record as much of it as I did here. I think Alaska pads the schedules on these flights a lot. Even with all the sitting we did on the ramps, waiting for pushback or taxi, we still ended up landing well ahead of schedule on every segment. I think the pilots just had a lot of time and they knew it. As for the border question. I'm not actually sure. I know that, even though the border is "closed" that doesn't mean no one can pass. My brother and his girlfriend, until just recently, lived in Montreal, and they flew down to the Joplin area and back several times in the last year. So, the land border closures aren't all encompassing. But, I don't really know all the specifics.

How do you Exactly filmed these types of videos? I know you use your iPhone but do you use a go pro stand or do you just use your hand to hold it against the window?
I hold the camera by hand. The whole time. It's the best way to get the best picture. No vibrations transferred though a mount etc. It's not easy, but I only want the best for my channel.

I've actually looked at those flights. Even recently. But, with Covid, they've been very difficult to actually fit in with all the restrictions. Hopefully soon, as things return to normal.

You're missing the point of it being the "full flight." Regardless, I make it as easy as possible for people to skip to the portion of the video they're interested in seeing, by listing detailed timestamps in the video description.

How do you book the Milk Run?
Anyone can book a milk run. Any flight between Seattle and Anchorage or the reverse, whose flight number is between 60 & 69 are milk runs.
How many hours or minutes is the flight?

Sometimes Alaskan airports are made in a place where they have to take off in only one direction, like at JNU a landing on runway 26 is not safely possible unless you’re on your own and have perfect visibility. Everything must be done on runway 8.
