Question: In an expression such as 2x + y the operator is obviously + BUT should we consider the hidden multiplication sign in 2x as an operator as well? In other words, are operators only the visible operating symbols in an expression? Are the often hidden multiplication signs considered operators or we shouldn't call them that since they are not really represented by a symbol?

@Aura Zero, I see that you posted this (excellent) question a year ago, yet no one has attempted to reply. Your observation about operators is an astute one. The use of the word "operator" rather than the word "operation" is a small semantic issue. However, thinking of 2x + y in the context of "operators" is slightly different than thinking of 2x + y in the context of "operations." If I ask a young learner how many operators there are in the expression 2x + y they may be inclined to only look for those 4 signs: addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. If so, and they see only 1 addition sign, (and none of the other three signs) they will likely answer that there is only 1 operator, seeing only one sign, as you pointed out in your question. But if I ask the same student how many operations are in the expression 2x + y, perhaps they will think not only of the signs. If they consider each term independently, they may recognize the "hidden" multiplication in the variable term 2x (2 times x). If so, they would answer that there are 2 operations in the expression (yes, the correct answer: 1 multiplication operation and 1 addition operation). For this reason, I teach young math learners to focus on operations rather than operators, at least until they are aware and comfortable with those hidden operations. (By the way, fractions are hidden operations, too. Though there is not a division sign visible in a fraction, every fraction is a division operation in which the numerator is divided by the denominator. For this reason, many consider the fraction bar "/" to be a division sign, as it appears on a 10-key and many calculators.)

In mathematical notation, the symbol "x" is commonly used to represent both multiplication and an independent variable. So, in an expression such as 2x + y, the plus sign "+" is considered the operator.
While the multiplication sign is often hidden in expressions like 2x, it is still considered an operator because it represents a mathematical operation. In this case, the operation is multiplication between the number 2 and the variable x.
In general, operators are symbols or functions that indicate a specific mathematical operation to be performed, such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division. These symbols can be visible, like the plus sign or the division sign, or they can be implied, as in the case of the multiplication sign in 2x.
So, even though the multiplication sign may not be explicitly written, it is still considered an operator because it represents a mathematical operation.

no, -3 is a constant because that's -3 means negative 3, basically what im saying is that "-" isn't a variable

Why is 2 divided by a number? But the letter is G it should be N because it should be written as 2 divided by a number G. Easy math
