Should Non-Natives Be Allowed to See Sacred Artifacts?

  • We often hear people lament the loss of Dine' culture and language, but inside Ned Hatathli Museum in Dine' College, as curator Nonabah Sam says, everything is here for us. There is a strong sense of being part of a continuing story of a people who have endured through time, rather than the last gasp of the victims of colonization. Nonabah doesn't just envision how to best display the pieces in the museum, she speaks to the pieces, she prays--and these divine conversations permeate the space. And, importantly, the museum is moving back towards a more protective approach to certain pieces and stories in order to preserve their sacredness. This means that well-meaning (and not so well-meaning) non-Natives may experience pushback against their requests to view certain items or hear certain stories. Perhaps for the first time in history, non-Native visitors are being asked what their intention is before having their requests denied. It's part of the complicated process of reclaiming Dine' culture and history. Join us as we continue our tour with Nonabah Sam.

As a non-native, I should never be offended by not being able to participate in sacred things that I will never completely understand. I am not so naive or narcissistic as to think that I could. But I deeply appreciate the beauty I see through my own perception of a people living and enduring in the origins, traditions, language, and the spirituality they were born into. I see this in the stories that you let the people tell in their own words. We (non-natives) have forgotten our own origin stories.
Your storytelling is a bridge of words and video images across a great divide. I appreciate all that you choose to share. AND, I bought a Spagoshi cup! It will bring great memories every time I have my coffee. I will always be here for this.

The land in between is so beautiful. The people are in between too - on their way to the true freedom of their own creation. Thank you. Great interview. Wonderful videography. Fascinating objects. Best wishes.

People need to understand that that the artifact are tools that our people used. Their not idols that are to be worship like she explained, just like every with most cultures they have tools they use to such as drums, rattles, flutes, and to make sounds to call on to the Spirits. Anything that The Natives wear on one self is to identify themselves

Thanks for your insight and comment. Agreed they are tools but I think what Nonabah meant was the museum is full of history and stories that give us the tools and resources we need in life. Again, much appreciate your support! Ahe' hee 🤙🏾
