Oh man, things are getting so much better! I have a few older laptops that can’t support newer software. With KASM and bottles, this might make life at home much MUCH easier, like as long as I keep up on server technology, I can save some $$
This is a killer app for chromebooks.
School tech here, raspberry thin clients don't really cut it when using it for anything multimedia related cost wise, especially with today's prices, namely to get it to somewhat apples to apples when you need to use a gpu the server cost itself and for a "professional" gpu (to share it with multiple vm's) eats the cost benefit right back up.
DEFINETLY do a spreadsheet comparison before you start buying, also taking into consideration that the thinclients might have noticeable lag (was shown a 150 ms lag thinclient) and also shouldn't be run over the general network to connect to the server, heh there's a reason stadia didn't live on.
Weigh your options and think if some bleeding through the nose now will help you avoid bleeding later (for the savants- pay upfront versus pay later).
Otherwise Cool Video!
I use this and host it myself at home, the 1 tip I would give is have two network adapters setup in vm for kasm so you can actually update and get images (pulled from the net) like kali for example!
This video earned my subscription
Thanks Don for the post. These are containers (you keep switching from VMs and containers). What I'd like to see is their docker compose files. I do think kasm is on to something. Thanks again, Don.
Can you do a video on the installation please?
Yes please
Very cool thanks for this video! Definitely needed/wanted.. will check it out this week for sure.
Man i've been using windows sandbox for all my questionable online shenanigans, but this is so cool!
Thanks for sharing this, been dreaming about something like this for a while.
They actually have docs and info on how you can docker up your own stuff into this. My estimate is that within weeks, the pi-hosted mob will explode the number of docker applications and services - but I could be wrong.
It would actually be world changing if the two projects combined to build out what pi hosted does - in KASM. You think I'm jesting, but I'm really not.
Hey thank for this video. I wached Chucks video on it and saw yours l. And you killed it. Maid it way !!!! More simple faster good shit my man.
This is so cool. Thanks for making this video, I will definitely check this out.
Could you also do persistent VM?
Hey Don, I hope you are doing well. Woow... 👏👏What a nice and beneficial solution... I would like to mention about it on my channel to my subscribers in Turkish language if you don't mind... They need to know about KASM...🤙
Thank You so much I have been trying to crack it since 2 days.. Finally it worked.. thanks
For a long time NixOS & Guix have provided an ability like this with VMs/containers, just not with a browser. Integration with KASM would be worth the effort IMO and shouldn't be too hard. Something to look into...
This is amazingly good. Thanks so much!
Best solution for schools on a budget.
Sounds cool, is there a way to create a persistent image between session (like a normal desktop environment) but with snapshots so that if something did go wrong you could backtrack to a previous state?
Great video. Just got up and running. Can you share how you right click into Tor from your regular browser?
Nice video. Could you mount a permanent volume in the Ubuntu desktop container for example? If so how? So no need to upload/download files?
Thanks
@Don - would you consider this to be isolated the way Qubes operates? How hardened it is to handle potentially malicious items? I'm wondering if this is a useful set of virtual gloves for inspecting potentially nasty files.
They are ephemeral, so as long as you isolate the networking it should be good for file forensics.
There is a pretty significant difference between container isolation and VM isolation, last I checked. If you're a security researcher, I would continue to use Qubes over KASM.
@@minifig404 I've not had cause to build a Qubes environment yet though I've read a fair bit about it - would you consider it worthy of its reputation as most commentators laud it to date?
This is awesome!!! Nice1!! 👨🏽💻🙌🙌🙂
nice video, very interesting
Good video. Do you know if it would be possible to have an timeout for a login after a period of inactivity. Thinking of use as a public access computer in a library.
Can you open VMs in a different tab?
How are they streaming the A/V so well 📺
They could make a Chrome Extension for the open link in Thor tab for normal chrome users.
I struggled to get Linux Teams to work too. I never got camera or desktop share working.
Can you make a video in which you open a malicious website or a known piece of malware on a container so we can see what happens?
That would be interesting.
Seems cool. They have said on their page that Ubuntu 22.04 is supported, but I was unable to make it work. Two of the containers keep restarting and it seems related to python so I did not wanted to deal with any of this and just downloaded Ubuntu 20.04. Running the installation now, I hope it will work fine on it
Awesome and I have a question 😱😱😱
Can it be installed on a Chromebook with penguin container?🤔🤔🤔
I took a look at it, and it seems to only support Nvidia cards right now for acceleration as it relies on you having the Nvidia container toolkit installed on the host. Shame tho because it seems like a good way to 'teach' family members how to use linux and that their games 'function' on linux. Still, I might be able to get my Father used to the gnome interface enough to let me install Fedora on his system.
try manjaro plasma, ive recommended other releases in the past but manjaro kde plasma is rather easy in my mind for windows users to adopt
Amazing!
will there be a Docker Container for KASM for ARM64 and AMD64?
I tried this with an Oracle arm instance. Looks like only a handfull of the docker containers (chromium, firefox, qbittorrent, Ubuntu Bionic, etc) have arm containers built at the moment
@@DannyCatacora for me it works now and it is really easy to install, did also make an tutorial in German.
I haven't had an opportunity to play around with it, but KASM does seem pretty cool. I've seen a few videos by NetworkChuck, TechnoTim, and TheDigitalLife on it.
i’d only use this to run apps that won’t work on my other device like full photoshop on my ipad… streaming these applications
Cool software, I see a lot of cool applications for this type of environments. On a side note, Don, my Question is, in building my home lab, should I run TrueNAS Scale on bare metal or via Proxmox in a VM?
bare, since you will get benefits from actually being able to read accurate smart data and physical drives for the btrfs file system
@@NovaspiritTech thanks for your input! I'm have been debating with myself weather to use TrueNAS Scale over Proxmox? I'm leaning towards TrueNAS as network storage is more what I want, but seeing all the VM possibilities with Proxmox and now KASM seems awesome. Will KASM run within TrueNAS?
Good point.. If I am running through proxmox should I disable these settings
Hi Don, Would it be possible to run it on the khadas edge 2 ??
Chrome: Kinda off a waste off time (if no container or Docker)
*uBuntu:* A step in the right direction - *w/o Container*
*Tor Browser:* As long as You (Don't) use - a *VPN.* Than its fine...
- Extensions can also mess it up.
Tried this in a smaller (less affected) area on 1 Comp - Years ago..
Could this work on a raspberry pi?
i was told some images will work, i havn't tested it myself
Hi I have been looking over the internet for past few weeks. This kasam is really good cannot say no to that but what if I wanted only a specific just like tor-browser container. Currently I am using pi-hosted in the portainer for pi-hole and yt downloader. But installing application like Kasam will completely dry the pi. Can you suggest something?
A few corrections:
They are not VMs, they are docker containers.
You put VM's and not VMs in the thumbnail.
Need a more in depth tutorial on how to get this working please sir
Hi, I have setup kasm in pve environment. But so many error happen when I try it😢
Does it has a windows workspace ??
Can this work with VMWare esxi instead of proxmox?
yes
Is it free to use?
Will it install in a Proxmox Container?
This is a full docker setup it's better to have it run in a VM which is what I am doing. You don't need alot of resources for it.
@@Darkk6969 The hosts serving this up were swamped after your telegram post. Great work. I was able to start over with a fresh proxmox ct and the build went perfectly this morning. Thanks for posting this.
is it all free on Linux?
yes
@@NovaspiritTech if you load it in a windows browser.....does it know any difference between that and a linux browser?.......is what i mean
@@breevwhyman2985 the browser will probably report its "host" environment, if you dont like that you can use browser plugins that change the user agent.(ie. random user agent plugin)
SandBoxie
👍👍
I would be freaking great if I could use windows apps with Kasm
most windows apps for work I would need then could destroy
Don I think u read my mind !
Looks like graphic shells
Awesome stuff, wonder how this kind of tech stays open source, and used /copied by rogue players …
Cool idea, don't have a use case as a average consumer
