  • A rough edited and long video of how I made a raceway from my basement up into the attic. I plan to use this route, to run a conduit and through the conduit, I will run ethernet to the attic. The end goal is to have ethernet routed throughout my entire house, but this video just covers drilling the holes for the conduit.
Here are the videos of others and what they did (tips/tricks):

Thank you for making this video, this is probably the best one I have seen on how to run wires from the basement to the attic, clear, intelligent, methodical. I didn't know where to start without causing a lot of damage and without a lot of trial an error, Infinite thanks!!!. I'd like to see the final results, you probably did a great work.

Haven't run more than 1 wire yet, unfortunately. That is just so its easier for the rest in the future, but when I finish up, I can make a follow up video. Two kids ages 5 and 2 keep my time pretty cooped up. Thanks for the kind comment and I am glad you found this helpful.

Brilliant. I have the same project. Basement, second floor and attic drops. I’ve been delaying doing it but now will use your tips to get it done. Thank you very much. This video was very helpful.

I added the same thing to a house I had built quite a while back. Fortunately for me, the drywall was not hung. You offer some good tips for working after it is already built!

Thanks for making this video. I bet it was a great feeling seeing that flashlight from the attic in the end there.

Very nice video, gives me a lot to think about on my plan. Looking forward to when Ethernet wiring is as common as coax.

I avoid wireless whenever I can, so I had a similar chase installed when my home was constructed. I've used mine for ethernet and audio cabling. I've installed outdoor speakers, PoE soffit-mounted cameras, and will be using it for some home automation projects.

    Very helpful video!
I’m experiencing a similar situation where I’m needing to map out where to cut between floors/sub floors In hopes of installing my Ethernet cable raceway.
I swear. Reality distorts when inside the cavity looking around.
Things both look more close together, and way further away at the same time!
But yea, thanks so much for this! You rock!

Glad you found it helpful! I was thrown back myself when looking in the walls. Keep in mind a couple things. If you use an external wall, you probably wont have too many things in your way however, you will be fighting insulation the whole time. If you want to use an internal wall, it's easier to find you route by looking at plumbing and the HVAC system and where they go. Electrical wires can go anywhere but the PVC and ducting usually only take bends and turns when necessary.

This is good stuff. My setup is a little less complicated than yours, thankfully, but your methodology is excellent. Thank you for this great video.

Thanks! Appreciate the compliment. I wish ATT didn't require you use their gateway, but you have to in order to validated the ONT signal I guess...

good job, if you can fish 1 wire to the attic than all you'll need is a network switch to avoid running any other lan cables in the future.

Thanks for the suggestion! I have considered having a switch in the attic, but I’m worried about temperatures. Also if the switch should fail, I have to inconveniently go in the attic to troubleshoot. It’s not off the table but running more cables and having one “data center” seems more appealing to me, currently.

@@tsayre020993 What I'm going to do is 1 home run cable to the attic then back down into the laundry room into a cabinet. That room is of course temperature controlled. I'll be able to control my 1 Ubiquiti AP, and I'll just use a POE injector vs buying a POE switch and do 2 drops per room. My builder did a terrible job when they built my house which was built before I purchased so I had no say in anything. My room is over the garage, and I'll do 1 drop to the garage with another ubiquiti Antenna.

You're very lucky to have a raceway like that!

Thanks! I know I lucked out having such a big cavity in the wall but I would be shocked if you home didn't have an area similar to mine where utilities are routed straight up from a lower level.

Narration was the right move, and you showed this off well. I am about to begin my adventure of doing this same thing in a similarly built house. Unfortunately, I do not have a radon pipe to follow so closely into the attic space... but pressing forward is the only way to get it done.

Not sure where you are in your project but when done I would def seal the hole back up as much as possible. This will help if the unfortunate should arise and create a fire stop and not allow easy travel of flame from floor to floor.

    • @jaycahow4667
      @jaycahow4667 3 года назад +1

Totally agree it needs to be sealed with fire resistant foam to meet fire code.

Thanks! I still have to run the bulk of the cables through but yes I definitely plan to reseal it with foam as soon as I can.

I'm about to do this. Did you end up running some kind of conduit, or just run the ethernet cables directly through the holes?

I live near Chicago, where a lot of code requires all power wires to be routed through EMT. It's kind of gray when it comes to other types of wiring like communication. Which is why I am thinking I can use flexible conduit, or even nothing at all.

Unfortunately most of us cant cut huge access panels in our drywall to do this. Unfortunately this video didnt help me much. Ya if i chop up my drywall i cant do anything.

I wanted to add a quick tip, if you can't afford to put a drywall access panel. You can listen in at 29mins, I had an alternate route I would have had to use. If I used that route I would have done a smaller access that could have been covered up by a standard coverplate. I hope this help!
