I really enjoyed watching this. WWII devastated too many people's lives all over the world. But Russians were at the brunt end of NAZI invasion. It's hard watching women die in war. It's hard enough losing men under your command.
Maybe Russia shouldn't have invaded Poland (over 50%), Finland, Estonia, Lithuania, Latvia, Moldova and large chunk of Romania. Why did the British and French start WW2 over Germany taking less than half of Poland again given that it was abandoned to its prior invaders after the war? It clearly wasn't worth it at this time. well i'm very tired of the never ending russian films involving ww 2. At least hollywood changes things up from time to time.
That's because it's part of the real world, but it sometimes is overdone and becomes pandering. I'm fine with it if it fits the story and isn't unrealistic.
Guess this can't be filmed this way in the US. At first you must be occupied to bring the sphere in it like in this movie. For the US you have to go back for this in the War of Independence or the Civil War for it. And a lot less of the usual Hollywood exaggeration in it.
At one point the subtitles say something like ,,at a distance of 100 yards../ Why do that, the character did not say 100 yards, and the Americans are the only people on the planet that uses yards so why would you not just write 100 meters ?
This is great series I always wanted to see Russia’s perspective side of WW2. Back in the US I’ve seen Band of Brothers about the Army in the European theater. And also in The Pacific about the Marines going head to head against the Japanese.

Sargent Fedot Yevgyafovich is a good Sargent. I was an infantry Sargent in the American army and would of served with him, if he wasn't a commie Ha! Ha!. Only thing I would of done different would have to put mud or dirt on the girls light faces. They standout to much for an ambush. Good show. Other than the type of parachutes the Germans used, the equipment and uniforms look right. The parachute smocks and mosquito head nets were a good touch. I got a laugh out the Sargent having the girls use animal calls for signals. When I was with the 101st Airborne Division we would make night jumps and sometimes my squad would get scattered. We had a pre-arranged call for each squad to assemble. The funny part was when you jump in over 500 troops in to a quiet drop zone and then all the squad leader start call for their troops it sounds like a zoo! You made me remember some good times.
Fedot was a great Sargent cause he took care of his people in his unit (which is one of the main things a Sargent does.) But Fedot should have sent one or two of them daily to recce around the village for any footprints, weapon buttplate prints on the ground, broken branches, dropped food/paper, etc.. that did not come from villagers. It was only by accident they were detected. Also when he said there were only two saboteurs, he should have said there were at LEAST two saboteurs. But yes, it's an outstanding series from any country. Almost a manual on how to use untrained soldiers in an emergency.
yeah I call bullshit. the 101st is an air assault division and only retains the name airborne because of its past. what unit were you in if you were in the 101st?
Johnny Vaught , those paratroops are wearing the wrong helmets, - regular infantry helmets, the type that injure paras, - not the shorter ones paratroops wore.
No, he just says uses a rural word for a long stick and she wonders if it means "easy push" because words sound familiar in russian. Nothing about Poland.

The Kirov railroad ran (runs still) between Murmansk and St Petersburg( Leningrad in the movie) and passes by the White Sea. This was an area contested by Russia and Finland in the socalled Winter War, of which the Sargeant was a participant ( briefly as he was wounded) So I believe it takes place east of the white sea in the general area of the railroad line.

I wonder why they didn't tie their boots round their necks crossing the marsh, it was such a big deal to lose footwear in such situations.........when you died in battle the first thing to be salvaged from your corpse would have been footwear and firearms and often in hat order.
I'd trade off the possibility of an infection in the swamp against losing my footwear any day.......have you tried walking through rocky ground without footwear lately? much more likely to rip your feet open and go gangrenous
Sue: You can dump out the water and mud from the boot, but you can't dump the big slash across the sole of your foot from some object in the water. You can pick your way over rocks since you can see them, you can't pick your way through a swamp very easily since you can't see where you are putting your feet, you learn to point your toes down and feel, then wiggle them as you put your feet down.
