The South Devon Railway - Bucolic Branch Line Beauty | Another Station, Another Mile #18

- There’s a wonderful romance to old branch line railways. A little steam engine chuffing along, gorgeous countryside views rolling past the carriage windows, a sense of peace and tranquility. Tragically, many of the most beautiful and bucolic of Britain’s branch lines were first on the chopping block in decades gone by, whenever people decided that pretty scenery didn’t generate enough profit. But their generally smaller nature meant they were often ideal candidates for preservation - and if there’s one preserved branch line that captures the spirit of days gone by, it’s this gorgeous little railway running along the banks of the River Dart, between the towns of Totnes and Buckfastleigh, in the rural splendour of Devon. Welcome folks, to a little line known as the South Devon Railway!

Glad your well and back
THANKS FOR THE MENTION (ELR)

Keep up the good work
Les
CHRIS!!!! cor blimey I've no seen him for ages :P and I do like your hat too sir!!
Haha! He lives! And thank you ^_^
Excellent vid on the South Devon Railway. Will have to put this on my railway bucket list.
Thank you!! Yeah if you can visit, it's definitely worth the trip :)
Definitely got to try make a trip there at some point, hopefully soon - looks amazing - do love a good heritage railway line!
nice heritage railway line in devon buckfastleigh and totnes riverside both look stunning great video
Thank you!! ^_^
Never knew the station building from Totnes Riverside was from a Station on the Birdport Branch Line but it's a lovely line that I haven't been to yet, it's like Kidderminster Town Station on the SVR isn't the station that was opened when the line was open, Brilliant Video and looking forward to the next one
Thank you so much! Yeah, fascinating how so many lines have had to build anew for changing circumstances - and the fact that they've been able to is an immense credit to their efforts. :)
Loved the intro
Heeeeyyyy muuuuummmmm!! im on the telly!!!
LOOK MA I'M FAMOUS
In May 1997 I was at Dartington visiting friends and took a train from Buckfastleigh to Totnes. Loco No. 7760 pulled it. Photos of that day show lovely weather. It was and still is very bucolic as you say. Remember sitting on that first bench next to the pagoda shed in Buckfastleigh with a nice young lady. Unlike Christopher Flynn we were both on telly by that time. Bloody actors!
Thank you for this lovely reminder.
Haha! Thats a lovely little story, thank you for sharing it ^_^
Really like these heritage railway lines, The East Lancashire Railway is probably my favourite video from your channel!
Thank you!! That's so cool of you to say, because honestly? Mine too. ^_^
@@HeyItsAJOmega Np!
Another great video from you AJ, happy to see you back uploading and would love to see something northern soon!
Thank you!! And I do have a few places Id like to visit oop norf, so...watch this space 😊
Wonderful account of the SDR. I still think it's appalling that the A38 was allowed to sever the onward route to Ashburton and remove a beautiful BLT!
Oh, totally agree! Basically strongarming the railway into it too, demanding they pay for the road improvements - like it was their business to begin with - or we'll sever your railway and make it almost impossible to put back. Real short sighted thinking there, lads!
Love the pretty little country lines! 😊
Theyre the best, honestly ^_^
Amazing video as always
Thank you ^_^
Amazing AJ what a great little branch line.
Thank you! ^_^
Great video! If you're ever in the area try out the kent and east sussex railway. Its a proper old branch line that trundles through rural kent and east sussex believe it or not! And its a decent length at about 10 miles. 😊
I know of that line! Believe it or not, it's probably the most local line to where I live :) I remember my family taking me down there when I was very little, so I'd love to return ^_^
@@HeyItsAJOmega Thats great! I'm starting my induction as a cleaner there next month so will hopefully be on the footplate at some point. It really is a great little railway. Really hoping they get their extension to Robertsbridge junction built.
Nice little vid dude!
I suppose its not too far from the dartmouth railway either is it.
Nope! Very close - in fact, if you look on the map at 4:02, the branch in the bottom right of the screen from Newton Abbot through Torquay? Right in the bottom right of the screen is Paignton - the railway south of that is what's now the Dartmouth Railway :)
@@HeyItsAJOmega yes indeedy! I was thinking of visiting it next week but sadly looks like the weather has decided to go all January again 🤣
Lovely part of the country!
Wasn’t GWR meant to not be running any HSTs now
Not the full-length sets from London, but they still run Castle sets, which are half length and run intercity between places like Cardiff, Bristol, Exeter, Devon and Cornwall :)
