This would be one of the best weathering videos I've watched. It so refreshing to see you using artists techniques, that is, going from dark to light and using lighter tints to tone down the paint. Very well done
Holy moly. The level of modeling accuracy on this gon is truly off the charts. While I confess to not liking graffiti, watching you delicately apply graffiti totally alters my perception. This is not just model railroading, it’s art. Brilliant work.
From the video made like a pro director was behind you to the level of intelligence and vocabulary and thevisuals.....WOW.! PLEASE MAKE MORE OF THESE,instead of one a yearish. I wish these were 2 hours long,I have absorbed so much, you are a talent my friend, cheers Troy
I use artists oils regularly, I use a piece of card to draw out the oil as this quickens the drying process on plastic and I've added real rust to the interior of a few gondolas from steel wool. Just leave it in a damp place for a few months! You'll get almost dust but it just has a little more substance than pure weathering powders. Superb work, I'm inspired.
Soooo helpful Thank you! I’ve never weathered and it’s one of my priorities to get everything beat up and weathered eventually. Great techniques for even inexperienced modelers like me to try
The only additional step I would suggest is the use of a hot soldering iron to add areas where a loader bucket or cargo has made contact with the edge of the box. A common occurrence which I may have accidentally done on real cars when loading and unloading them.
Wow , super prototypical , there is always Haters of Graffiti , yes some is very much trash. However there are some that are undoubtedly an Urban Art form in the modern era, rail cars the canvas. Nice job , koodos.
One of the best for sure.. other favorites of mine are Boomer Dioramas, Dans Railroad, and Mellow Mike has some slideshows he uploaded of his own worK. Im more into Ho scale model railroading. As far as military stuff, PLASMO Plastic Models & Nignt Shift have some great stuff and along with Panzermeister they are my top 3 favourite Tank/Military modellers.
An incredible “how to” video! Great explanations especially why oil & pastels. I use brake rotor shavings which are very, very fine to sprinkle in my gons for that fine junk left behind from previous loads look. Go to your local auto parts store that turns brake rotors with an empty butter cup and ask if you can have a cup of shavings. It’s free and 1 buttercup will do a bunch of gons…. Really great video! Please make more sharing your techniques!!
Definitely a great weathering job. I must of have watched this 20 times. I am collecting the materials to start this once I find the same car. No one seems to carry this Exact Rail car. Anyway there is a local train show coming to town in July. Hopefully, I find the car. Great job.
I model a time when there was no graffiti on any rail cars, so I don't do it. I use rust powder that I make by putting some 0000 steel wool (about 3 pieces) in a jar and fill it up with white vinegar. After about a month or two after it has turned to rust, I pour it out into a stainless steel 11x14 photo processing tray and wait until it all dries. Then using a single edge razor blade I pulverize it into a fine powder which I later use as rust. I use an Exacto (Aproxo) knife and make gouges in the plastic which i then fill up with my rust powder. After weathering, I use my airbrush and give a final coat of DullCoat. Looks real 'cause it is real. Cheers from eastern TN
Man, I could totally see that gondola going down the tracks. Looks just like every one I’ve ever seen. The rust technique looks very realistic, especially around the rim of the box. I’m completely blown away, great video and tutorial.
Another great video and tutorial of the weathering on a Gondola! That thing turned out ABSOLUTELY AMAZING! I'm like you with the Tags and just looking at several from prototypes etc and w practicing a couple times it's very easy. They're not meant to read or even figure out what they mean. The Saddle Brown worked perfect on the inside. Props to you for knocking this outta the park! Thanks again for sharing your videos and look fwd to what type of rolling stock you'll be doing in September!
This is an exceptionally helpful video. I really like how you explained how and why the acrylic and oil layers are used to achieve the tones you want. It’s also very helpful that you explained the alternative methods for applying the oil paint if you’re like me and can’t find the oil brushers at the local hobby supply. Thanks again for the awesome video.
I can't imagine people having a problem with modelling tagging/graffiti... that's the most interesting part of modern rail cars! I've always wanted to walk a rail yard so I could get high quality photos of modern tags.
Phenomenal work and attention to detail as always. Nice job acknowledging Sumitomo Takahiro's immense modelling talent. Thank you for sharing and inspiring us with your model tutorial.
Love your videos. You get down to business and explain what materials you use and how to use them. No silly music or yammering about nonsense. The realism is stunning. You inspired me to try and hand paint some graffiti, and to my amazement, it wasn't that bad! LOL Thank you and please keep up the excellent work.
Thank you for stopping by :) I love watching your progress on your layout. Yeah, you can use these effects on pretty much any subject and it still should look great.
Outstanding video and thanks for demonstrating your weathering techniques. I'll have to give some of your techniques a try the next time I weather my rolling stock. The gondola weathering is fantastic and looks very prototypical. -Tom
@@Panzermeister36 Had a question about Tamiya Thinners. Tamiya X-20A thinner vs Tamiya Lacquer Thinner. Is there a reason or application to use/not use one over the other?
Imagine crying about painting graffiti on a model gondola! 🤣 I’m going to tell you this, coming from a guy who wrote graff for like 15 years, your graff is actually looking pretty good dude. Painting the main piece is one thing because that takes practice and time or whatever but as far as the tags and random scribes go, they look great! Looks very realistic and to scale. Painting graff and weathering on model freight cars was my first taste of scale modeling so I absolutely love these videos dude. Keep up the good work, I ALWAYS learn something new from your videos and sorry for the rant! Lol
@@johnathan133 and the other thing is, like it or not, it’s a definite part of railroad history. If your trying to model modern freight, chances are it’s going to have some type of graffiti or has had graff on it at some point in its life. So it definitely has a place in modeling imo.
Thank you for the comment! I for sure enjoy the artist style of most graffiti which is why I like to include it on my models. Some graffiti is nasty, but most of it is art all on its own :)
Why don’t you get Shoestring to actually do it? He’s not hard to get ahold of and I’m sure he wouldn’t charge that much at all. And the authenticity I’m sure could make your model go up in value if anything.
It looks gorgeous. When my wife inevitably builds a layout in our basement I'm sure she will be annoyed that i expect this level of realism.
Lol thanks Adam!

Yeah Adam's a lucky guy

Holy Sh!t. This is spectacular. Simple, do-able, and maybe I'll get close after a dozen or more attempts (that's reasonable!). Great production too.
Nice job. Graf looks great. Reality of modern railroading. Totally cements this gritty weathering.
Thank you!

Very clearly explained, and a Beautiful result. The graffiti to paint by hand is already an art form. Thanks for the great inspiration

Love it, would not leave the graffiti out it looks cool. 35 years of railroading it looks very authentic!
Great job. Like the C&NW patched out to UP. Only thing I would do differently is to deform the upper edge in places, you see this a lot on gondolas.
Thanks Bob. I considered adding some damage like that, plus bulging out the panels somewhat, but I don't have the confidence for those skills yet.
What a result !
