Been a while since I was in Dewsbury. I actually went inside the house as the people that lived there at the time were very kind and incited us in. It had a carriage house to the rear. At the front were the original cast iron railings which I prefer but I notice the current owners have a higher fence and gate maybe for privacy. The Dewsbury Art Group did a fine job. It's a pity the dates are way out for the blue plaque. The Hartley family lived there from 1908-1915. Albion his father left Colne in 1895 to take up a job in Huddersfield where they lived to about 1902. From there they lived in Leeds to 1908. I suppose its too late for the plaque to be altered. In Colne we did try to gwt a blue plaque put on the house of his birth place but since the lady at that time who owned the house was harassed she wouldn't agree to the plaque. Maybe in time could try again as I think it may have a new owner. At the time of the disaster few people in Dewbury knew who he was as he was away playing with seasonal engagements then by 1910 was regularly at sea. The church they attended at the bottom of West Park Street did erect a memorial bronze plaque to him as he'd attend that church when home. As you know Colne commissioned a bust memorial as the Hsrtley family were well known in the town and he's buried there. Still all these are fitting memorials. The house at west park is the nicest house they lived in. Interestingly all the houses the family lived in still stand today. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks so much Darran for the additional information which I found very interesting. How nice that you got to go inside. The lady who owned the house, at the time the plaque was installed, was a member of Dewsbury Arts Club. Fascinating tidbit about the carriage house at the back. If you look on google street view you can see more of the house as it is pre the high fence.
Wow, Thank you, thank you for this video. Horrid of me, having an interest in the Titanic & not thinking of the Hero's, the band & Leader's names..... Proud to see his house preserved..
Thank you for taking the time to comment. I'm so glad you enjoyed the video. I hope that one day the house will be taken by the local authority and hopefully made into a museum so we can see how it might have been furnished in Mr Hartley's time. I found out later that Mr Hartley was a regular attendee at the church on the corner of his street (as the car turns in) and would often play there.
Thank you so much for including my rendition in your video Rodger 🙏 What a fascinating journey and so interesting to see the home he once lived. It’s so heart breaking to think of how he met his end, never to return back to his home. Thank you for sharing
You were so gracious to allow me to use your music. I can't imagine the video without it. I am so pleased you enjoyed watching and I trust viewers will check you out on RUclips or FB. Thank you Rachel.
I lived in Dewsbury going on forty years ago, only now have I just learned that the bandmaster was from Dewsbury. It is nice to see that his name including his musician colleagues has been honoured with a bandstand. Next time I'm back there I will pay it a visit.
Hi Chris, Mr Hartley also played for many years in the church at the end of West Park Street. He had previously lived in Huddersfield and was a member of their Philharmonic Orchestra.
He wasn't. He was born at 92, Greenfield Road, Colne, Lancashire, a house which still stands although without displaying anything to record its historical significance.
Hi Robert, Thanks for adding the information about Mr Hartley's birthplace. I think such a prominent fellow should at least have his birthplace marked. Colne's residents certainly gave him their respect at the funeral and his grave marker deservedly is a statement of that.
What a shame that there isn't anything to commemorate Mr Hartley at his birthplace, which in all fairness, is more significant than his last address. Though I do applaud Dewsbury for naming the bandstand in his name. The story of the band playing music while the Titanic was sinking gives us an insight into the true character of the musicians, which is something we can all learn from.
Thanks so much for adding this extra info. I've seen one or two YT videos showing his grave and telling the story of his funeral. I find anything to do with Titanic fascinating and when you add in that Wallace was a northerner then I always like to learn more about him. Thanks for watching the video.
He was indeed, - at number 92, Greenfield Road, Colne, Lancashire. The house still stands, - but despite the resplendent memorial to him outside the Town Hall, there is no commemorative blue [or any other color] plaque to mark the actual place of his birth.
@@robertwhittaker5477 That is a real shame Robert that Wallace Hartley's birth house is not marked. I wonder if the current owners do not want a plaque on their house. I know if it was me I would be thrilled to think I was in the space a historical figure occupied. I shall have to look the address up on Google Street View. Thank you for your comment.

Wallace is an ancestor of mine, what a brave man he was. It’s great to learn more about him
How interesting to be related to Wallace and yes so much to admire about him.

Thanks for the info Luke. There is more detail in the description for anybody who is interested.
