You need to make sure that YOU TAKE A very active roll in your safety... Don't put it on the coach or the training partners. in a perfect world every gym would be as safe as possible all the time in order to minimize or fully avoid injuries. Sadly you often end up at the gym where that is the least of all concerns. For anyone at any age that's definitely not ideal.
most places have beginner classes which sometimes are the most dangerous, generally higher belts can control themselves much more, that said I will echo what has been said about you being the most concerned for your safety, just tap. other than that everyone is bringing what they got to the table and trying to make things happen which is super fun to experience! Go for it!
What is a slap then? Can you put all your weight into it and use the heel of your hand or does it have to be a swinging motion? I could knock someone out with the former.

I'm 38, with a trick knee. But it looks like something you can really get addicted to.
