Actually, you can affect what shows in Legend segment, when you print your file. In Bar Styles window you can notice there's * sign next to bar names. By adding or deleting * sign Infront of the bar name, you are defining what will be shown in Legend label.

One of your topics is : The timescale printed doesn't match what I see on my screen:
On Views menu: Zooming 'Entire Project" shows only months or project activity, (Jan-Dec.) yet when I go to print, it includes a blank month of Dec from the previous year??
