Hi Richard, Thanks for the video I really enjoyed it, I use tunnel traps mostly here, our ground is much heavier in Herefordshire than you. The only comment I would make about the Putange traps is I always use a small bit of wire through the loop of the trap to stop the Mole dragging the trap into the tunnel, cheers Richard..

Thank You for your Kind Comment. I agree with you about the wire to hold the trap, that would work very well. Not mention it in the video but I sometimes put the loops together in the run and stick the flag through both to hold them.

i fought a battle with moles in my garden, never had a lot of luck with traps in the end i killed them by using poisened worms dropped down the runs plus hose connected to a gas bottle pushed down the hole

Dealing with moles in the garden can be a real challenge, and it sounds like you've tried a variety of methods to address the issue. While using traps is a common approach, it doesn't always work for everyone, and it seems you found that to be the case. Moving to methods like poisoned bait and gas can indeed be effective in eliminating moles.
For those still struggling with moles, it's important to consider the impact of various eradication methods on the environment and non-target animals. Exploring humane and non-lethal options, such as deterring moles through natural repellents (like castor oil-based products), vibrating stakes, or by encouraging natural predators, can be effective and environmentally friendly alternatives. Additionally, professional pest control services can offer safe and effective solutions tailored to your specific situation.
Remember, moles are beneficial in many ways, as they aerate the soil and control insect populations. Sometimes, finding a balance between tolerating their presence and protecting your garden is the best approach.

At 13.21 as you pull your hand away from the hole it looks like the moles feet are moving...try slow speed to see clearly

@@pyroarch57 13:21 ??? The moles were definitely goners. I always check to make sure.

    Are they edible?

    • @yorkshirefarming
      @yorkshirefarming  6 месяцев назад +1

      What a great question 👍
Yes, technically, moles are edible. Like many small mammals, they can be consumed. However, in most cultures, eating moles is not common, and they are generally not considered a food source. If someone were to eat a mole, it's important to cook it properly to avoid any health risks, as with any wild game. Additionally, the taste and texture might not be appealing to everyone.
Good luck with your BBQ this summer 🤣🤣😂

It's the farmers who make a mess of the land with their pesticides , inorganic fertilizers , and the loss of biodiversity with their sprays.
The moles were there before the farmer's

The comment raises important concerns about the environmental impact of modern farming practices, particularly the use of pesticides, non-organic fertilizers, and sprays, as well as the resulting loss of biodiversity. While it's true that these practices have significant ecological consequences, it's also crucial to consider the complexities and pressures faced by contemporary agriculture.
      ### Modern Farming Practices and Environmental Impact
      1. **Pesticides and Non-Organic Fertilizers**:
      - **Pesticides**: These are used to protect crops from pests and diseases, ensuring high yields and reducing crop loss. However, their overuse can lead to soil degradation, water contamination, and harm to non-target species, including beneficial insects and wildlife.
      - **Non-organic Fertilizers**: These are applied to enhance crop growth by supplying essential nutrients. Nevertheless, they can contribute to soil acidification, water pollution through runoff, and disruption of natural nutrient cycles.
      2. **Loss of Biodiversity**:
      - The use of chemical sprays and monoculture practices (growing a single crop over a large area) can significantly reduce biodiversity. Diverse ecosystems are replaced by single-species fields, diminishing habitats for various flora and fauna, including moles.
      ### Balancing Consumer Demand and Sustainable Practices
Farmers are often caught in a difficult position. They must produce enough food to meet the demands of a growing population while keeping costs low for consumers. Here are some ways modern agriculture is attempting to find a balance:
      1. **Integrated Pest Management (IPM)**:
      - IPM combines biological, cultural, mechanical, and chemical practices to control pests in an environmentally sustainable way. It reduces reliance on chemical pesticides, promoting the use of natural predators and crop rotation to manage pest populations.
      2. **Precision Agriculture**:
      - This technology-driven approach uses data analysis, GPS, and remote sensing to optimize field-level management regarding crop farming. It ensures that inputs like water, fertilizers, and pesticides are used efficiently and only where needed, minimizing environmental impact.
      3. **Organic and Regenerative Farming**:
      - These farming methods emphasize soil health, biodiversity, and ecological balance. Organic farming avoids synthetic chemicals, relying on natural processes and materials. Regenerative farming focuses on restoring soil health, improving water cycles, and increasing biodiversity.
      4. **Agroforestry and Polyculture**:
      - These practices involve integrating trees and shrubs into crop and livestock systems (agroforestry) and growing multiple crop species together (polyculture). They enhance biodiversity, improve soil health, and create more resilient ecosystems.
      5. **Government Policies and Incentives**:
      - Many governments are providing subsidies and incentives for farmers to adopt more sustainable practices. These policies encourage the transition towards methods that protect the environment while maintaining productivity.
      ### Consumer Role in Sustainable Agriculture
Consumers also play a crucial role in this balance. By supporting sustainable and organic products, even if they are slightly more expensive, consumers can drive demand for environmentally friendly farming practices. Additionally, reducing food waste and opting for seasonal, locally-sourced produce can further support sustainable agriculture.
      ### Conclusion
While it's true that traditional farming practices have contributed to environmental degradation, modern agriculture is evolving to address these issues. Through innovative practices and technologies, farmers are working to minimize their environmental footprint while still meeting the demand for affordable food. However, achieving a sustainable food system requires collaboration between farmers, consumers, and policymakers to support and implement eco-friendly agricultural practices.

This detailed response highlights the challenges and efforts in modern farming to find a balance between environmental sustainability and consumer demands for affordable food.
