Saw him, idk, 15 or so years ago at the now long gone Met Cafe in Providence, RI when he was playing with J Mascis & the Fog, after the gig I approached him to say what's up and give props and he told me to buy him a drink, I told him I was only 19 so wouldn't be served, so he bought me one instead, we then proceeded to hang out together with some other fans while I fed money for drinks n' Mike got um' from the bar for us. One of the best nights ever, Mike was so down to earth, gregarious and told us awesome stories about tours, bands, fun times. It was so dope. I'll never forget it. Thanks Watt. That shit meant the world to those of us who got to chill at that bar with you.
After meeting Mike Watt with his band the Minutemen at a punk rock club called; "Godzilla's" in the early 1980's, Mike came up to me and knuckle punched me in the stomach, he's the reason I became a bass player.
I had a similar thing but Mike didn't punch me. i Walked into the bathroom of a club he was playing and he was bent over washing his face in the sink. Problem was the door was right behind the sink and i smashed this door straight into his ass and he slammed his head against the wall. I was mortified that i did that but he just turned around, hugged me and started talking about D. Boon and bass to me. That was one of the greatest moments of my life haha
Watt is the very definition of a working musician. Plays with anybody and everybody, from garage bands to stadiums, always learns and evolves, but is always Watt. A national treasure, this guy. Also a helluva nice guy.
Watt + Missingmen played the loudest & greatest rock show I've ever been to and then he hugged me and gave me a sticker. Also, I interviewed him once and he's just the most genuine, passionate, and generous artist I've interacted with. A hero.

Some of my best memories as a kid is sitting in my room hearing my mom and step dad listening to punk in the backyard. Years later when I started listening to it on my own I would think to myself “ hmmm , this sounds so familiar. Is this a cover?” Then all of those memories rushed back.
I saw fIREHOSE in 1989. Mike was a petty stout man and I swear I thought he was going to break his bass. His playing style was extremely aggressive. As a person, he seemed very gentle. I walked up to him as he was breaking down his rig. He was the nicest guy. I told him I had been thinking about buying a bass and seeing him was the last push I needed. He gave me a big smile and a bear hug and told me to go have fun. How could I not take that advice?

It was extraordinary. I was mesmerized. I would see firehose probably a dozen times in the next two years. I had never heard of Minutemen. I was 17 and had no preconceived reverence about this man or his music. I just loved what I heard. Will see Mike Watt on June 2, 2017, in Denver. Looking forward to seeing the old man.
I remember seeing Mike Watt live somewhere in the late nineties and he was playing a white Larry Graham signature Moon bass. I've never seen him playing that bass anywhere else, I wonder what the story was with that. He sounded great BTW.
I just love how emotional he still gets whenever he name-drops his old Minutemen bandmate and friend, D. Boon, even though it's been more than thirty years since he passed -- that tells me more than words can just how close a bond the two of them had and the level of collegial esteem Watt held for Boon!
I have always enjoyed this man's playing. I have always enjoyed the printed and live interviews with him. fIREHOSE and the Minutemen were superb bands. Mike Watt is a super nice guy. I love his songs and lyrics. His solo projects are Great! The tone of this bass reminds me of the bass tone on Mr Machinery Operator and Ball Hog Or Tugboat. Not my favorite bass tone for him. I understand why he went for the smaller bass but I think the best tone came from his Telecaster/ PJ bass... I'd like to see a Mike Watt signature of that... with the EMG pickups, the sunken Badass bridge, the active EQ, and made by Schecter. I'm glad He has a sponsor however. Mike Watt... you're awesome!
Squier didn't really exist in its current form till 1982. Watt played a black Fender P with a DiMarzio pickups in early Minutemen. Later he added the Tele Bass, even later the slotted EB-3, non-reverse Thunderbird in fIREHOSE and several EB-3/0's after that.
It's nowhere near as good looking as his old basses, but I love Watt's enthusiasm and I understand that those other instruments were murder on his aging hands, so perfectly understandable.
Watt is a national treasure.
