Hi mate, I am down in Tassie and considering a career change (at 45!) I love the outdoors and believe surveying will be a great fit that will get me out and about whilst providing an interesting intellectual challenge. Thanks for posting your videos, they are a great way for me to get some genuine insight into the field work :) I am looking at the external degree being offered by South QLD Uni.. if I made a start on the degree, do you think an employer might take me on as a tech so I can apply my studies on the job (actually surveying)? any advice would be appreciated - thanks again!
Hi there. I studied through USQ also. I worked full time and it took me about 10 years to complete it all because I got married, had a family and juggled work. It can be done in less time. But yes I'm sure there would be surveyors in Tassie that have room for surveyors assistants to start with so you can get the experience you need. There is a massive shortage of surveyors at the moment in Australia. There are TAFE pathways also and after 2 years you can be out working under supervision. The TAFE course gives you credits towards the degree. I guess its a matter of applying and making that step. Happy to discuss further.
