Tie a Necktie (How to Tie a Tie for Beginners) - Pratt Knot / Shelby Knot. Knowing how to tie a tie is one of the most essential mens fashion skills you can have. Learn how to tie a tie fast. The Pratt Knot is one of the fastest and certainly more easy ways to tie a tie. And the best part is: the Pratt is one of the sharpest looking tie knot styles around.
In this installment on how to tie a necktie knot, I demonstrate how to tie a tie step by step using a necktie knot popularized by Don Shelby, the American news anchor (hence the by-names: Shelby Knot, Pratt-Shelby, Pratt Knot). The knot was first created by Jerry Pratt, a US civil servant, who showed it to Shelby in 1986. Shelby incorporated it into his on-camera attire. The Pratt Knot was subsequently embraced by the mens fashion world and received further publicity in the New York Times which acclaimed it as the best new necktie knot in over 50 years.
Today the Pratt tie knot is one of the most stylish ways of tying a tie. It’s a sharp, symmetrical, classic knot - perfect for job interviews, weddings (it makes an awesome wedding tie knot!), formals, proms, black tie events, graduations, work and business meetings.

Ideally, the goal is to finish with the wide end of the tie hanging around the same height as the upper edge of your belt. To achieve this, you need to consider the starting position of your tie (i.e. before you even start tying the knot). As a general rule, for this particular knot I recommend starting out with the wide end sitting lower than the thin end - like I demonstrate at 0:27 . This works for most people. Having said that though, we all come in different shapes and sizes. No two individuals have the same body structure. So it might take a little trial-and-error to find that sweet spot. For example, if you're quite tall, then you may need to adjust for that in your starting position by starting out with the wide end considerably longer than the thin end (or vice versa if you're finding that the tie is too short). Hope this helps

There are some differences. The Windsor is a wider, triangular knot with more of a symmetrical, full-bodied appearance, whereas the Pratt knot is narrower, elongated and slightly asymmetrical. They’re both triangular in shape, but the Pratt is generally more moderate in size than the Windsor. The Windsor involves more looping and wrapping, resulting in a thicker, more complex finish. It requires a bit more tie length, which can be tricky with shorter ties or if you’re quite tall. The Pratt knot is tied with the tie inside-out and has fewer steps, which makes it quicker and easier to learn. It’s also more efficient in terms of tie length, so it’s often a good choice if you’re working with a shorter tie.
