It had fucking better. None of these techniques are new at all- the brilliance of this show is that it has amazing cinematography on top of actual amazing writing and everything else, to boot. The precedent set is to just let actual talented, experienced production teams do their damn jobs. Not catering to reboots, remakes, socio-political propaganda, censorship, or overindulgent self-insertion.
An underappreciated aspect of this show's whole look are the locations. This is a story that takes place mostly in corporate offices, courtrooms, parking lots and industrial spaces and yet the show really creates beauty out of the mundane. They filmed on location for most of the show, and it really helps add to the lived in feel of the whole thing.
You’re absolutely right! The locations in the show are often overlooked, but they play a huge role in creating a grounded, authentic atmosphere. The way they transform everyday settings into something captivating is truly impressive. This is such a challenging task, and I think you must be a cinematographer to really appreciate this aspect! By the way, are you a cinematographer?
Same ! My friends doesn't understand. First : I could watch the show again and again for itself, the music, the camera angles, the colors. Second : It's hard for me to watch some other TV shows since I watched Better Call Saul/ Braking Bad
I remember pausing the episodes constantly... "Daaamn this shot." The use of light and shadow, mirrors, colors and perspective is something else in this show. In Breaking Bad there were already a lot of that, but in Better Call Saul they took everything they learned and improved.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts! I totally agree-both shows have such a masterful use of light, shadow, and color. It's amazing to see how "Better Call Saul" builds on what "Breaking Bad" established, taking the cinematography to another level. Those moments that make you pause and appreciate the shot really showcase the artistry involved.
The cinematography is unbelievable. They truly utilize the art of the medium to its fullest potential. Shadows, colors, light and camera placement all so so gorgeous
The crazy thing about better call saul for me was, that everything felt so natural and realistic. There wasn’t one thing that seemed like it couldn’t ever happen in real life. Probably the great cinematography played a big roll in that. Many of the shots are so simple and don’t „offer“ much high end camera recordings or stylistic components. Some shots could have been made with a go pro and because of the great camera movements and placements, it would have Been no problem. Seriously amazing show!
Yes, cinematography is definitely one of the main parts of the film that can help the director and the film a lot. Vince Gilligan should be congratulated for this cast
I completely agree! The brilliance of the scenes and the storytelling are what truly matter. It's great to hear that you appreciate the show as much as I do! The creativity and artistry definitely shine through, regardless of awards.
What I love about BCS in composition is that it doesn’t feel forced. While you have many, dozens of short films that try to use composition and color grading as a stylistic option, almost all the time it feels unnatural, forced. While in the show you have concrete moments where it’s used to mean something, to show someones feelings, something the character is going through. The same with color. It’s not unnatural, it is used to fill some purpose. I really love the composition in BCS and Mad Men, Two of the best tv series with an amazing cinematography.
that is why this video, while being perfect example of good cinematography, can't give enough credit. No video can. In cinema everything complements the story. And we as the people who know the show, know that these shots perfectly capture that "don't shoot just because it's pretty" approach. And this is where a simple composition differs from another, it's filled with context.
You missed one of the best shots - when Lalo gets arrested in season 5 and is surrounded by cops, his side view mirror is showing the view of the police behind him but it matches perfectly with the cops in front of him, so it looks like the mirror is showing the cops in front of him (if that makes sense).
Wow. I took a couple film design classes in junior high and thought all that info disappeared but this video just unlocked a litany of memories I guess I’ve just kept stored in the subconscious. Amazing work, gained a new sub and I can’t wait to go through your other stuff.
This video is great and genuinely so helpful. It's simple and smart enough to let us analyse the shot on our own as well as see all the various techniques at play here. I love Better Call Saul and its incredible cinematography, thanks for making this!
People are really sleeping on the extraordinary cinematography in both Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul. Every frame tells a story and serves the mood so perfectly well. Breaking Bad, in its simplicity is breathtakingly powerful -- just like the main character. Here in Better Call Saul, the creators get to be so resplendent and flamboyant, yet have layers of meaning just like Saul. Exceptional work. From and function, together together.

Breaking Bad has a great shot every 3 or 4 episodes. Better Call Saul has 3 or 4 amazing shots every episode. It really feels like the work of veterans that put hours upon hours to each frame. Never seen any other show do it like this.
Absolutely! Better Call Saul’s cinematography is on another level. The attention to detail and the care put into every frame truly showcase the mastery of the team. It’s a visual masterpiece!

This is one of the aspects of Breaking Bad that is significantly improved in Better Call Saul. The cinematography looks beautiful, especially 4:56. Such incredible scenery.
How is 1:34 the rule of thirds? Except that actor doesn't meet crossing lines, the left side is completely out of interest. Looks more with a fibonacci rather 3rds
Lines are also usually important in the rule of thirds. Not just connecting points. like placing the horizon line in the lower third. But you are right. Fibonacci may also be in this shot.🙏🏾 Thank you for your opinion

One of my favorite shots is when Saul meets the Salamanca twins. The back of Saul’s head is unfocused in the center of the frame, and the Salamanca twins pull up in front of him, and exit their car *on either side of his head.* It’s such a neat way to show they’re one unit. 4:42
Great choice! That shot perfectly captures the unity of the Salamanca twins, using the composition to highlight their connection and create tension. Such a smart visual decision!
