Composition refers to how the elements on screen (actors, scenery, props, etc.) appear in respect to each other and within the frame itself.
Film composition, or composition in film, is a rather complicated concept when you realize just how much is involved.
Film composition follows similar standards as photography composition.
By studying the location, the lighting, deciding on a lens, where you place the camera, all of these decisions combine when deciding on composition.

You can't go bad if you really master the basics. Damn so good
everything is so simple... but you should plan at the first.
@adoboarchives4738 Exactly! Mastering the basics is the foundation for everything. Glad you liked it!
@berkaktes Exactly, everything feels simple once you’ve planned properly. Planning sets the direction, and execution becomes much smoother.
I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw you uploaded a new video, and even better, about Oppenheimer! I can’t express with words how much I love your content, thank you very much!!
Wow, thank you so much! I'm really glad you enjoyed the video, especially on Oppenheimer. Your support means the world to me, and I’m so grateful for your kind words!♥️
Great to see some of these shots in their true aspect ratio. Finally.
I'm glad you appreciated it! Seeing shots in their true aspect ratio really brings out the detail and impact they were meant to have. It’s great to be able to experience them as intended!
Loved the video. Keep up the great work! ❤
Thank you so much! I really appreciate your kind words and support. I’ll definitely keep working hard to bring more content!
정말 좋아요 감사해요
정말 감사합니다! 기쁘게 생각해요! 😍
Great video buddy! It enabled me to appreciate the cinematography of Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer better. Keeping making great videos like this!
Thank you so much, buddy! I’m thrilled to hear it helped you appreciate Oppenheimer’s cinematography even more. I’ll definitely keep creating content like this!
Thank you. You have silently thought me how to see the world in composition, the more i watch your videos, the more i learn about compositions. I love how you present your videos too, you thought me about composition "visually" without without words, the invisible lines in the shots are the teachers. You lined up the lines impeccably. Thank you! I've subscribed! Looking forward for more learning with lines XD
Thank you so much for your thoughtful comment! I'm thrilled to hear that my videos have helped you see the world through the lens of composition. It means a lot to know that the visual elements resonate with you. I'm grateful for your support and excited to share more about the art of composition in future videos. Welcome to the community!
Wow, love your style of video. Love how clear and concise it is. You’ve clearly mastered show rather than tell.
Thank you so much! I really appreciate that you noticed. I always try to focus on visual storytelling, so it's great to hear that it comes across clearly.
"You filmed an odd number of things?"
"No no no. It's the RULE OF ODDS"
Haha, exactly! The Rule of Odds is a key principle in cinematography odd numbers create a more dynamic and interesting composition!
Usefull video ❤
Glad to hear that♥️
Good job broth. Thanks for this information.
Thanks a lot, bro! Glad the info was helpful. Appreciate your support!
This is sooo good... Love it. Great video
Thank you so much! Glad you enjoyed it.♥️
t'arrêtes pas chef !!!!
Haha, merci beaucoup ! Je ne m'arrête pas, t'inquiète ! Ton soutien me motive à continuer !
I love watching the clips and trying to guess what the composition is before its revealed. I usually fail 😆
That’s a fun way to engage with the visuals!😁
It’s always interesting to see how the composition comes together, even if it’s tricky to guess.
rules of thirds and centered images is not some secret technique. It's been using for in photography for ages and goes back to paintings 500 years ago.
You're absolutely right! The rule of thirds and centered compositions are timeless principles that have been integral to art for centuries, from classical paintings to modern photography. They’re not secrets but fundamental tools to create balance and impact in visual storytelling.
Love your work!❤
Thank you so much! Your support means a lot to me.♥️
Dude this was amazing thank u
Thank you so much! I'm really glad you enjoyed it! Your support means a lot!
excellent work 😍👏
Thanks, buddy! Your support means a lot.♥️😍
Interesting fact, they had to frame a lot of the shots centered stated the dop in an interview cause of the large format and the distortion of the edge due to imax.
That’s a great fact! The IMAX format really challenges how shots are framed. Centering the shots helps avoid distortion on the edges and keeps the focus where it needs to be!
I came here by chance, and you made my day
ThanQ
I'm so glad you found the video and enjoyed it! Thank you for your kind words!
Simple is Beauty... Very well done, this film was beautiful to see in 70mm,. It's nice to see just how far you can go by mastering the fundamentals
Thank you! I totally agree, simplicity really can be beautiful. It’s amazing how much can be achieved by focusing on the basics. I'm glad you enjoyed the 70mm experience!
No Country For Old Men next? 👀 i love your vids, very helpful thank you
Thank you for your kind words! I’m glad you find my videos helpful. "No Country For Old Men" is a great suggestion-I'll definitely consider it for a future video! Stay tuned!
I love it when people water mark hollywood films lol
To be fair the video is his work and you can find these clips (like he did, I presume) pretty goddamn easily. It’s the second biggest movie of the last year
He did his efforts in editing this video so he can.....
The watermark is about the channel 🤡
I think he means all the rule of thirds and leading lines and stuff drawn on the screen.
@Walter-Shite
You're absolutely right! The clips are easy to find, especially with a film this big. It's all about how you use them and present the work. Thanks for the support!
Hey, can you do ultraseven cinematography? I love akio jisojji cinematography
Thanks for your comment! I’m glad to hear you love Akio Jisojji’s cinematography. I would love to cover an anime, but I’m a bit unsure about which one to choose. I’ll definitely get to it soon, so stay tuned!
@@MastersofCinematography thanks! I love his play on lights and perspective. And fyi he did a great job in toku industry.
cheers, thx !
Thank you to♥️
Please, make a composition in cinematography from Dune Part Two.
Thanks for the suggestion! I’ll definitely consider creating a composition on Dune Part Two cinematography. Stay tuned!
@MastersofCinematography 🙏🏼
Where did you get the imax ratio footage in this quality???
Thanks for noticing the quality! I purchased the footage from official IMAX releases and worked on enhancing it for the best viewing experience!
Good Effort 👏
Thank you! I really appreciate your support.
Thank you
Your welcome ♥️
❤❤❤
♥️🙏🏾
you can cross the lines in every direction and still end up something that is meaningful. I mean, come on man - just enjoy the picture no need for such a convoluted circuits
when you master the lightning, everything ends up in a classical picture angles...
Thanks for your comment! Just to clarify, this video is aimed at a more specialized audience, particularly filmmakers and cinematographers, so that's why I focused on certain technical aspects.
what does "pattern and texture" mean? Can you give some other examples?
The massive pattern texture of trees around the character make it pop in the flat pattern of light of the sun
@sauravchaudhary997
Pattern and texture both refer to the visual repetition of elements in cinematography. Pattern focuses on repeating shapes or lines, while texture relates to the surface qualities of objects, like roughness or smoothness. Both can create visual interest and balance in a shot, often enhanced by lighting.
Love these videos. Please do one of "Stalker" by Tarkovsky
I’d love to make a video about one of Tarkovsky's works. His films are such a visual and philosophical masterpiece, and Stalker would be an amazing choice to dive into!
ufff beautiful. please Interstellar
Thank you! Interstellar is absolutely breathtaking! I’ll definitely consider making a video on it!🙏🏾
lol, i've neevr heard of a compostion called "Fill The Frame"
Haha, that's a good one! 'Fill The Frame' isn't a specific composition-it's more of a cinematographic technique where the frame is used to its fullest potential.
nice
Thank you ♥️
Ok
🍻
I will play devils advocate on the topic of composition in Nolan’s films; I find them kind of dry. The issue being that he has to shoot for so many different aspect ratios in mind that everything has to be shot fairly generically so that it can work in all formats. A close up in IMAX has heaps of negative space around the actors face, but the same shot in 2.35:1 is super tight on their face.
I’d like to see him shoot and present a film entirely in the same aspect ratio no matter how you see it, just so his compositions can have more intention behind them and not, quite literally, be forced into a box.
I really appreciate that his first priority is for the biggest theaters. That said, if you watch any of his films before The Dark Knight--and Inception since that is only one format-- you can see how he uses a single aspect ratio for an entire film.
@@stephenaldridgecreative yes you’re right, I would probably say Inception, The Prestige, Batman Begins and Memento are probably my favourite of his films. I hadn’t put the two and two together but the cinematography of those films would certainly play into why.
@URBONED
You bring up a valid concern. Balancing multiple aspect ratios can certainly limit how intentionally compositions are crafted. When shooting for IMAX and other formats, the focus often shifts toward flexibility, which can result in shots that feel less deliberate. I agree that having a consistent aspect ratio could help Nolan's compositions feel more purposeful, allowing the visuals to be more precisely aligned with the story and emotional tone without being constrained by format requirements.
imax perspective is more insane
Absolutely! Watching Dune in IMAX takes the experience to a whole new level, everything feels even more immersive!
Should’ve just used the film’s original score tbh
Are you sure? The original film score gets hit with copyright on RUclips!
Putting the rule of thirds guide over Van Hoytema’s composition is entirely missing the point.
What do you mean?
@@MegdadEmad No professional DP is using a rule of thirds guide on set. But more importantly Van Hoytema specifically doesn’t frame for it. He frames for a less intellectual point of few that draws the viewer in when watching the movies on big IMAX screens. He’s specifically avoiding neat intellectualized composition like this. That some shots line up with the rule of thirds purely comes down to the point of view he’s creating not him flowing the rule of thirds.
You've shared your perspective, but I completely disagree with it.
It’s possible that he hasn't considered this, but a cinematographer always has compositions in the back of their mind, even unconsciously, and follows them. If the rule of thirds is being followed, then it’s being followed. Neither you nor I can truly know the mindset behind it.
@@MastersofCinematography Uhm yes we can just listen to what he says. Just because the rule of thirds lines up doesn’t mean that’s what he’s going for or that it is a helpful way of understanding his approach. If you want this to be useful for Hoyte’s work you have overlay a center crosshair not the rule of thirds, because that’s what he’s thinking about.
noise
Are you referring to sound design or something else?
ug mass comm students these days
Hey, could you clarify what you mean by this? Are you referring to something specific about Mass Communication students these days?
this music still sucks ass three weeks later
Haha, I get it! Not everyone’s a fan of that music. Glad it sparked a reaction though!
fucking horrible music but neat analysis
Thanks for your honest feedback! Glad you enjoyed the analysis, and I'll definitely work on improving the music choices in future videos.
nice
Thanks♥️
imax perspective is more insane
Absolutely! IMAX takes the visual experience to another level, with its incredible clarity and immersive scale. It really enhances the impact of every shot!
