I just purchased one. I was surprised at the jamming issues you had. I shot FMJ round nose and jacketed hollow points with no issues. Hopefully that was because SA took some positive feedback such as yours and made some improvements? thanks for the video!
I too have had zero issues with a wide variety of different ammo , also according to my gauge it’s average was 4.24 pounds 🤔

What a great video man. I'll be watching more of your content. I picked up my Emissary last weekend and love it. It's nice that they modernized the 1911, as a lot of people like myself were introduced to handguns with striker fired pistols.

Here’s my 1911 history in a nutshell: Springfield TRP in .45, Nighthawk Custom Shadowhawk in 9mm, both very tight, precise, and pleasant to shoot. Springfield Ronin 4.5” in .45, and Para Ordnance 4.5” in .45, both very unpleasant to shoot in every way you can imagine. Finally, Colt 1911 Competition in 9mm was completely unreliable and I couldn’t get it to shoot a complete magazine. My take away is I’m not buying an Emissary, a Ronin, a Garrison even a Vickers because I’ve learned that $800 1911s don’t buy you Nighthawk ball bearings.

Great realistic points about the 1911. My friend and I are lucky we had no issues but I have seen others who had multiple malfunctions. I'll replace that rear sight, that white outline is a pain.

I was given a 9mm/4.25 version by my dad. He bought it and wanted the 45. He gave me the 9mm if i fixed his 45's problems and upgraded the spring guide to a tooless for him.
I like the bull barrel and full length guide rod. It is a real peach and I would get it in 9mm. And further I would get it Mag-Na-Ported. A modest cost really.

Great video Hilton, can you tell what recoil weight did the gun come with? And the work on the feed ramp, did you recontour it or what? You kind a lost me there and probably many other viewers.
In this day and age, that you were getting feeding issues with other ammo other than ball is shocking and unacceptable.
Responding to an old comment, so sorry. However, I will say that if you buy a new Springfield 1911 or 2011, they will warranty feed issues. They'll do the re-machining and polishing of your chamber throat and the frame's feedramp at no cost to you.
Good review - especially describing the mods! I am looking at the 9MM version & hesitate mainly due to the sights, which you addressed. With still retaining the factory front sight (.140 wide), do you believe can still work for Steel Challenge shooting? I typically change out to a thinner fiber optic.
I’d go with a thinner front.

It was common some 30, 40 years ago to disable the grip saftey believe it or not. But not by way of a rubber band.

You say this sight is cluttered, but in an article it states you love these. Which is it?
You sound like perfect guy to ask this. Is Springer Professional from custom shop really different class from all their other Springer offering or its all hype bullcrap? Is the fitting perfection?
Custom Shop guns are gunsmith built with higher grade parts than the production guns. I don’t know what “perfection” might be but SACS has historically been a squared away custom shop.

Feed ramp work is good, but 16lbs recoil spring will feed most any ammo with no issues.
Old trick if you have a new 1911 that is so tight it seizes up while shooting and you don't want to beat it to get it apart.
Spray a little bolt loosener like WD-40 in the groove on each side where the slide meets the frame. Just a little, you don't have to get crazy.
Rap the gun in a cloth, place it in a ziplock freezer bag and stick it in your freezer for about 5 hours or so. The freezing temp will cause the metal to contract enough to free the gun. If that doesn't work you have a really stuck gun. Send it back to the factory at that point.

I have shot 400 rounds from a large assorted brands from FMJs and hollow points. And I only had one round that didn’t fire. And come to find out it was the round being the projectile was set back into the casing. Being someone’s old carry rd that was rechamerbed multiple times.
Overall mine “so far” has ran great. I noticed when yours wouldn’t fire with hollow points. But it kept releasing the slide stop. So I’m saying that if you racked the slide would work. I know you can release the slide stop too. But personally I hardly use that method. Overall I appreciate it your videos and knowledge.
Sling shot release of the slide provides more slide travel and closing force, and can basically "muscle" a JHP or FP through a less than optimal feed ramp. Which means it's like turning up the radio to hide the grinding sound in the car. Try dropping the slide on JHP/FP on yours via the slide stop and see if it's still good to go.

@@108Performance alright I tried 2 mags of federal hollow points via slide stop. Each time it worked.
But in saying that. I do use the slide stop Periodically with many pistols. The very first day I had this gun I did the slide stop on a fmj at home and it wouldn’t place round in the chamber unless I racked the slide. So in saying that maybe for my gun it just needed to be broken in while shooting to Loosen up some. 🤷♂️
@@smoothoperator137 Only the top 1-2 rounds from slide lock are of much meaning, so look hardest at those. Break in will not affect the feed way, nor do any of the other usual internet theories like lube or limp wrist.

None of these guns are going to be out of the box good to go at their price point, it's a matter of understanding them and knowing what you're getting into.

That's very unusual from Springfield...you really had to do a lot to that gun...I'd be very upset if I bought one and had that ...and besides stacatto... Springfield is my favorite brand of gun 1911
Great vid, but disappointed with Springfield that it took $2K to fix a $1K pistol.
Responding to an old comment, so sorry. But Springfield would warranty all of that at no cost to the original buyer, including the hollowpoint feeding issues. Clearly, Hilton prefers doing the work himself :)
Galling on a mixed metals gun? First ive seen that. I know stainless on stainless can do that if theyre equal hardness, but carbon on stainless is a first for me. But i havent been around the block very much so there is a lot i havent seen.
It's not galling. It's incorrect fit and clearance.
Regarding the SACS, they generally use mim slide stops (even on the professional to my understanding) however I’m curious if you or your department ever had trouble with them breaking. I know slide stops should ideally be bar stock. Do SACS slide stops seem to hold up or should I replace mine?
They changed the specs on the Professional Model after our contract expired, [EDITED:] but our slide stops were also MIM. Of note, we never broke any.
@@108Performance oh wow that’s a bit shady actually but good to know. I guess I will be replacing mine then. I’ve never understood for the price point why they aren’t machined. Anything else I should swap out while I’m at it they changed after the contract? Lol I know grip safety and thumb safety are cast and not as big of a deal. Maybe disconnector?

@@sirmufasa9684 I like machined thumb safeties and slide stops. Disconnector is fine whatever it is, allowing that it's doing its work right now. Grip safety is fine.

What did you (HYam) actually do or what was needed to allow feeding of non-ball ammo? I understand the correct answer for non-gunsmiths is to send it back. I think you mentioned you did some work to the barrel (i.e. reaming? throating? link? feed-ramp angle (frame)?); I also know Springfield-Armory doesn't always tell its customers (like me) exactly what they do or why (what they found). I've only had to send an AR15 back to Springfield and they'd only tell me they re-reamed the barrel and replaced the entire BCG (took ~6 weeks total; unable to speak with the actual gunsmith/armorer/tech). I do think about another 1911 someday (still have three), but may spend the Professional price to possibly get a 100% functioning 1911. I've only gone to one Armorer's class (by J.Jardine).

Is there some sort of tool or method for determining if the feedway is acceptable? And is it possible/practical for someone to fix feedway geometry without a mill? From my understanding of the gun the quality of the feed ramp and barrel throat is the impedance for being able to use non ball ammunition.
Shoot it with full mags and JHP/FP and you'll know really fast. Enlist the services of a dedicated 1911 specialist smith and they can easily rectify the feed way for you, or I explain it in full detail on my 1911 Duty Tune DVD set.

We're each dealing with samples of one. Keep in mind that I used a stringent testing protocol in addition to just shooting it.

So.... you had to do another $500+ in man hours and parts to get the gun squared away?!.... sounds like a massive fail for springfield

Different price points, completely different levels of manufacture. The Staccato is a smoking deal at retail for all machined parts and CNC/hand fit everything.

@@GunsandButterTV They've reset the bar, that's for sure. They have some advantages due to proprietary mags removing one of the big variables that customers inflict on their 1911s, but they do a good job with the manufacturing.

You’d do best to ask that smith
Its unfortunate that you give this gun a thumbs up and say you like it, given that it is so poorly constructed that it wouldn't feed properly and the slide locked up. To the average consumer, who is not a gunsmith, this is a complete deal breaker because of the hassle and expense of returning a firearm for service. A big thumbs down would have been preferred. That being said, you revealed the facts as you saw them and hid nothing, so the viewer can make his own choice. Thumbs up to you, and thumbs down to Springfield. A new 1911 from Springfield should run 100% on both FMJ and defensive ammo. Otherwise, what's the point? This gun is marketed to Mr. Average Consumer, and it needs to go bang reliably out of the box. Thanks.
Thanks for the feedback. I do point out all of the positives and negatives for the viewer to decide. My rating and impression of it are based on my own experiences in shooting and handling mine. Each viewer may have a different decision to make based on their own frame of reference.

Maybe I’m crazy, I don’t think the point of the video was to make people think this is an extremely unreliable 1911. Chambering a flat nose round using the slide stop would never come into play for a lot of us.
Your supposed to lubricate this kind of gun. Can’t just run it dry man… it’s hard to take people serious that aren’t familiar with the platform.

You’re better off buying a Wilson, Nighthawk or Staccato
That’s irritating to pay that much money for a gun and have to fit the slide yourself
