There's a building in Toronto that has a "bio-wall" in the lobby filled with plants that works on the same principle as the talk. The wall filters the air for the entire building and is connected to the ventilation system, reducing the need for plants on every floor. The air in the building never seems stale and there are fewer sick days caused by people breathing in stale air. The energy/water costs are also low in comparison to running more expensive and less effective air filtration systems.
lulumoon2 where is the building? I live in Toronto

Whoa, my grandmother suffers heavily from shortness of breath. This sounds like an awesome way to relieve some of the pressures she experiences.
One comment: everything about the "money plant" or "pathos" is poisonous to eat. So be careful that small children and pets can not reach this plant for a nibble.
One feedback: after watching this video I added 7 4 feet hight areca palms to the household and 3 2 feet "bedroom plants". My husband says he wakes up feeling better in the morning as a result. Cool!
Deborah Marchant really! I’m going to get more plants
Wrong . All wrong ...
But , enjoy ✌️

Money plant
My mom is older as well and lives in a large house alone. I set this up at her house, and it definitely has helped, as she does not go outside much.
Keeping 3 different plants inside the house can enhance your life span. Thanks for sharing these wonderful thoughts. Nice Video.
*runs and buys those plants* Thank you!
NASA's Dr. Wolverton wrote a book called "How to Grow Fresh Air" containing exact breakdowns of the 50 most common houseplants. While Snake and Money plants are the toughest, Boston Ferns, English Ivy, Janet Craig and the Rubber Plant are all much better at cleaning the air.
I used to sneeze badly during spring, but after growing 30 small plants (including two pots of pothos in water, the type of plant mentioned in the video) in my bedroom, I never sneeze and build up a ton of tissue paper ever again. If you don't have large space, get a few small plants and hang up at the windowsill. I mainly grow plectranthus and oxalis, they are great to make herbal tea. Hope this information helps.
Dear all, Dr Kamal Meattle has given us a tool not needing any political or religous support to implement. Just knowledge. Congratulations
he says they have to grow the areca palms in "vermi manure" (Vermicompost) or hydroponics... if you couldn't understand him..
Actually most plants have a night and day cycle, during the day they create 02, and at night they create CO2. the 02 creation (in most cases) highly outweighs the CO2 production at night (exceptions exist). Some plants like Dr Meattle shows do produce 02 every moment of the day (if ideal plant living conditions are met). Source: I am a student botanist
Michael Friesen are there plants that secrete o2 at nigh
Which indoor plant produce the most though?
Thank you for sharing your knowledge. Do you have any recommendation for other inexpensive and low maintenance indoor plants which remove indoor pollution? Also, what is your opinion on impact of low e windows on indoor plants? From my own experience, switching from a regular to low e windows (which I think blocks the UVA spectrum of light) has made a tremendous impact on the growth of my plants. None of my plants, which previously bloomed with beauty and vigor, are doing well now and the only thing I can attribute this to is the light spectrum which is blocked. Any thoughts on that?
@@nelsonpenafiel573 of course NO! they need sunlight.
@@johnjames4618 that guy in the ted talk just said the mother in laws tongue produces o2 at night tho...
I'm totaly going to do this. Great info thank you.
Welcome India! Brilliant talk.
sounds like all 3... It's quite a lot, but what a benefit... I live in NYC and the air is horrendous, I'll be doing this asap.
how was your experience since that time? Did you tried to grow some of this plants. I'm very curious about this.
Good video. He was straight to the point.
Increasing quality of life is priceless.
Short and sweet. Great video
Thank you, sir.
this is fantastic!
Simply Superb!!! Thank you for the info.
simple but powerful message, I guess 4 minutes is all it takes
Mind Blowingly Awesome
short and sweet :)
I should get some of those plants
I live in a similar apartment. Right now, im considering to sacrifice some more space to my plants...
A jungle? definitely, but I can see a certain appeal in that. Its not exactly so that white walls (maybe with posters, other artworks or similar decorations) are the height of esthetic living space, either :) Plants are beautiful in a way that only living things can be. I believe they would integrate wonderfully into most kind of human-made environments.
I'm interested to learn that so few plants are needed per person. I had thought that long-duration space missions which envisioned greenhouses to generate/scrub the oxygen were fanciful - no longer.
Fascinating thx.. I love TED
Thank you!
best ted video in months.
@AnnNoire These plants are zone 12 if you wish to grow them outdoors. Any zone will work if you grow them indoors and keep the temperature 50 or above.
Well done!
Peace Lily, Aloe Vera, Dracaena, Chrysanthemums are also amazing plants for cleaning the air and removing toxins

exactly my sentiment, but I also recognize the importance of this option.
I'd rather see studies that examine a wider variety of plants and their efficiency.
Perhaps mosses as well used in air conduits to do the very same thing.
"and you would not die.... at all."
Lol thanks for the clarification.
All that aside map props.
So did I! There's something about the way we read language so quickly that makes the "h" jump to the adjacent vowel.
Very cool. That takes up a lot of space though.
and how long do the Areca Palm need to be outside after 3-4 months? like 1 day 1 week or?
NEVER
The picture is of Sansevieria Laurentii so now im confused wich one is the best trifasciata or Laurentii
Mother-in-law's tongue - named by a botanist with issues lol.
Excellent video, short, to the point and very informative.
Nice information.

"You would not die... AT ALL."
: )
A tall
❤❤❤ Thank you!
This is great idea, but I don't think I have room in my 2 bedroom apartment for 26 extra plants.
Try vertical gardening!
I agree use of rooftops on a large scale would help both with man influenced climate and clean air but not enough...
Old growth and treetop canopy systems are what need to be preserved/repaired. to keep up with what we are doing here.
Mosses produce huge amounts of oxygen which is why I suggest them in an air conduit. Perhaps cultivating canopy vegetation to later be placed in trees where it's been removed. As both a product and a filtration system.
great info
Absolutely Correct
small talk but with full of facts!
The best way is to
redesign Town plan
house plan
very interesting.
The first thing that comes to mind is that algae photobioreactors would be more efficient. But they seem cumbersome compared to the simple pot plants that this guy is suggesting.
I think the number of plants needed in order to mantain a healthy enviroment is high, would be interesting to see what genetist could do to help improve this sistem.
I understand the need to wash air in dense urban environments and the use of house plants to wash the air "indoors"... that's all good and interesting that it's been narrowed down to 3 basic plants.
Is that it though? No more investigation in which plants are most efficient? Are we done?
No...
And another question... do we retreat to indoors or do we protect and promote "plants" that will effectively work to wash the outside air so that less in needed indoors?
other options?
*atoyota* re- outside air - a lot of research has and is happening in this field. One thing that's catching on is urban roof top tree planting, which both filters city air and moderates temperature in buildings. Last time I was in Toronto I looked up and saw several apartment top 'forests'. There is hope. : )
Links to reputable sources please?!
theres a NASA paper, you'll find it fairly easy
uhh great! thx
Really excellent information.
@PeaceUdo They do, but in varying amounts.
Thank you, very informative.
@sherilaugh Do you have any updates about your hobby? Is your asthma still gone? Do you have plants in your bedroom and if so, do you take them out at night?
that presentation flew by... is there a longer more detailed one by him
yes, enter his name on youtube, there are a couple more of his videos which talk about more details.
Quite a thought
Very Inspiring information. We all must follow this advice.
Preeti Rasoi
No.... You don't just follow !!!
You decipher!
Don't just grow plants inside.
RECONNECT WITH NATURE OUTSIDE!
How do you follow the 8 plants per person though...
great information - shokria!!!!
(cont)... New architectural techniques can be instituted that take into account the savings that are to be had by installing a plant growth system that is complete self-sufficient. Money can also potentially be saved on the health care of workers because problems such as headaches and respiratory complications are drastically reduced. This solution is a win-win-win for the economy. People need to build these structures, workers get a fresher environment, and the employer can take home profit.
what about the water requirements?
Thank you for informing on how to keep our rooms filled with fresh air.
no since it converts co2 to O2
plants do not releas co2 (in general ) in high amounts or at all
..excuse me while i go get some plants.
How have u been
😂😂😂😂
RIGHT
cool, im getting them for myself, and will try get our hotel to invest too.....awesomeness.....
nice stuff
He didn't say it was the climate that caused the need to clean the leaves, he said "every day in Delhi, perhaps once a week in cleaner air cities," it sounds like particles in the air are dirtying up the leaves. If the leaves are dirty it would impact their ability to efficiently clean the air if the leaves are dirty. I'm not assuming the plants will die or even "not thrive" without the wiping down... this chore is to maintain peak usefulness in air filtration.
Brilliant;)
In this pandemic...having air purifier is very necessary......u can order it by my shop... reply fr further details
Wonderful info. I heard spider plants are great also. With hydrophonics, many can avoid the mold allergy issues.. It would be worth the 'jungle effect' in a small apartment.. to have MORE oxygen, less formaldehyde.. We only have 40 years to go.. we need to stop polluting.. big-time a--now.
@eljay2121 its in delhi, very limited space, very high pollution. in the UK the plants would have to be wiped alot less/not at all, as no layers of grime will build up on them.
in delhi, not alot of people are going to be able to afford machines either. and if you live a year longer because of having a jungle, isit not worth giving up a few meters of space?
No kidding.. I was hoping it would be longer.. Figures, one I really enjoy and its just over in a few minutes..
You might enjoy the short videos by Dr. Eric Berg DC packed full of great right to the point health tips.
Very nice video
Uhmm I got areca palm an usually my plants die. I tend to forget to water them and such:p But because of it´s big size it seems to cope well. I bought mine from IKEA which for me makes it common.
and loving both Ron Finley's , new: A guerilla gardener in South Central LA TEdtalk as well as Britta Riley: A garden in my apartment. . .
both of which the cure for any that ails us, grows in the garden
Most definetly, I hope he doesint stop there!!
I just bought a plant for my bedroom. Apparently it removes 5 toxiins in the air and only requires watering once a week and a little bit of sun. The plant is Spathiphyllum wallisii. I wonder if I'll notice a difference, we'll see =P
did you notice any diffrence?
@@nadsv93 No not really. I think in order to really benefit from these plants, you'd have to have them all over your house or apartment. 4-5 in the bedroom, 10-20 in the living room, 1-3 in the bathroom etc. I opted for an air purifier in my bedroom instead - The noise it makes helps me sleep better, and it catches a decent amount of dust as well. It wont remove toxins like the plant though.
@@vBDKv noise? Dust? I thought you bought a plant, not an air purifier.
Good talk!
I bet more houses will be developed that are part green house/ connected to a green house. That would be effecient and people could grow some of their own food right in their homes.
Ok he says 4 Areca Palm's per person (shoulder height), 6-8 Mother-in-Law's Tongue (waist height), and ? Money Plants. Is it either this plant, that plant or that other one? Or should I get 10+ of these plants combined?
How many Money tree's do you need per person?
A way to automate that would be a hole in the market.
On to the drawing table!
Neem tree is the best India. Grow it beside your bedroom windows. People who live in coldest weather condition places like me, can have this type indoor plants. Now are days everyone comes and promote everything.
Re design interior space of
Government offices providing Space for Air Purifying Plants.
We already know how to fix the atmosphere of earth, quit burning fossil feuls and plant, not cut down trees.
Indoor air quality is a huge problem now that our buildings are sealed up tight for efficient heating and cooling. This man just pesented a way to make that air better, to promate better health and quality of life.
Thank you for sharing!!
5 stars *****
I also agree... but this research should not end there.
And with that I'm sure you agree as well :)
question: how many plants do i have to keep in my apartment?
8 waist height snake plants per person is what he said...
How many money plant per person?..
Brilliant ! Absolutely brilliant !!
"This plant converts CO2 to oxygen!"
Wow. Sounds like a very special plant.
At n8
IT CONVERTS CO2 TO OXYGEN AT NIGHT!!!!! SNAKE PLANTS!! LMAO!!! AT NIGHT!
no. I'm just warning against complacency... urging more investigation and not what seems to be a retreat to the indoors.
I just made a suggestion that mosses (even ferns) placed in air conduits could do the same thing if their properties were discovered and properly distributed. At least it would reduce the need for so many plants of the three varieties mentions as well as the maintenance.
Was this a "troll post?"
@dbzakj as well as it does at the beginning. they ought remember they are guests in our homes when we watch them and don't need be blasted out of our mind. . . maybe we ought add it to all their videos. . .think anybody would take notice? ?
so who exactly is going to take those 60,000 plants outside every 3 months?
well if you just take 667 plants outside every day, you would not have to worry about it :D. Would be a never ending job, witch could be a steady job for someone.
Dirk Diggler easier to just move the building
Dirk Diggler just put them in a greenhouse with removeable walls and roof.
they just do better.. if they get fresh air and natural lighting somehow it shouldn't matter too much
ie: Placing near a window. Opening a window. Creating air movement.
it's mostly just for the one plant. both pothos and Sansevieria do well outside, but do not need to be put outside at all.
Perhaps some sort of pneumatic system that blows air on them?
Not sure if I can grow this in my apartment.
some plants use o2 at night or in absence of light
Omeezy omizzer so they smother you?
No they provide oxygen at night
Areca Palm 3-4
Hydroponic
Mother in laws tongue 6-8
Hydroponic?
Money plant ?
Hydroponic.
13+ plants
Hydroponic / hydroculture is preferred.
I like how he has science, instead of 'the energy of the motion of the plant' or some other woo woo.
