    I managed to get 3 horses, 2 mini shetlands and a donkey for absolutely nothing. I got an ex-racehorse, a thoroughbred jumper and an ex-riding school all free to good home. The mini shetland were rescues from a friend who ran an animal charity. I also fostered on of his horses and got him into peak condition before handing him back.

    I just adopted my very first horse (February 4th, 23) and I paid $800 for her. I lucked out so very much with her! Unfortunately, she came a neglect situation, was very underweight, hooves were overgrown with white line disease, but she must have been someone’s pride and joy at some point because she found that she had previous training! The white line is gone, and we are getting to know each other and developing a wonderful bond. I am madly in love with her!
    So, I also highly recommend adopting a horse through a rescue!

    I got my first horse from a “low end auction” I got her for under $500 and she is the best horse I could ever have asked for but it wasn’t easy. When I got her they told me she was 8 years old and dead broke, I got her home and she is a 3 yr old… it wasn’t the auction who was lying either it was the seller but lots of sellers lie so you have to take what they say as a grain of sand.

    Just a heads up about purchasing horses through FB or other online groups - if the seller asks for a "hold" deposit, run the other way! It's probably a scam. People will take random pics and vids off the internet, and post them "for sale". Like she mentioned in the video, most people are honest, just be aware that there are scammers out there. Ran into a few when looking to purchase my second mini.

    My horse came from a kill pen. I didn't buy him from a kill pen, but his prior owner did. She fell in love with him in a picture and bought him. But she wasn't able to train him, so she eventually needed to sell him. I worked with him for a month to see what his personality was, and decided to buy him. He's a great little guy with a lot of confidence, so I'm glad I got him. He still isn't "fancy broke" but he's great on the trail. This is my second horse, and I really wanted to get one that I could work on for a while before I bought him, so it worked out really well for me.

    Our most dangerous rescue was an Andalusian cross used as an Amish stud. Lies across the board when that thing went to auction (even auction!), that horse was drugged, and once the meds wore off, he tried to kill any human that went near him. Buyers surrendered him to the rescue and it’s been years trying to get this horse to be manageable. It’s a shame what some people do to these beasts

      I hope to adopt my future horse from a rescue, it's just such a good deal, same reason I adopted my young cat from the SPCA - for $165 I got a kitten who was already well socialized, who had been neutered and had his baby shots already - basically a free cat if you consider the $165 to be reimbursement for vet bills. He is SUCH a sweet cat and I would absolutely adopt a pet from a rescue again, including a horse!❤

    The problem with kill pen is not about winning or losing. If you pay the kill buyer, he will go to the auction and buy three more horses with that money. In other words, you save one life and endanger 3 others. It is better to skip the kill buyers and go to auction directly. Also, not all horses from kill buyers will go to slaughter, they are as well taken back to the auction.

    • @letheanlove
      @letheanlove Год назад

      Exactly. The save one life argument is a false one because the horses the kill pens market and sell on FB were purchased solely for that purpose. They use it to fund buying horses they will actually ship to slaughter. The deadline they tout for a horse's transportation just means they're shipping off to another auction, not across the border. "Kill pen rescue" horses were never a part of those that were to be sent to slaughter; they're saved from another round at the auction if anything. The kill buyers have quotas to meet with these slaughterhouses and you better believe they meet them.
      The only way to combat this is to go to the auctions the kill buyers are bidding at and bid higher on the horses nobody wants.

    • @stormmary1

    • @tracyjohnson5023
      @tracyjohnson5023 8 месяцев назад

      @@letheanlovewell it does matter to the horse you get. You're correct that if they have a slaughter quota they will meet it, even if they have to put lower end riding horses on the truck.
      I get horses from a few local traders that I trust. Do I pay a little more than I would if I bought at the sale from anybody? Sometimes, but at least the trader will know if they're crippled or crazy as they get ridden after the drugs wear off. I'm also welcome to see and ride the horse in person.
      I know some people get upset when they buy a horse and the age told isn't right or horse won't work for them.
      Newsflash: many vets pulling coggins ask owner age and put that down without checking. There are also vets that can't age a horse very well and some horses are hard to get correct. If a horse is safe to ride, I don't worry about its age.
      There's also the fact that the horse gets ridden for a few minutes for the video. What you see is what they know. They don't know what the horse will do if ridden longer.
      I used to see more trader horses going from sale to sale and different traders, but not so much anymore.
      What ticks me off even more are the flippers that claim to be rescues.

    My first horse was a miniature that I got for free from friends of family because he was a stallion until he was eight and was splitting up his heads and gelding him didn’t work but he worked out here well.
    A week later we got half sisters miniature mares from kajiji and are really good. I have videos of them on my own channel and the only time we got a horse that didn’t work out was from a rescue that was pretty far and we were told the right age but he was a lot greener then what I was ready for. Thankfully through that I found my trainer who bought him off of me and we have found my heart horse that we’ve now had for just over a year.
    Based on that this video was enlightening. Thank you.

    Thanks for educating people on what a kill pen buyer is. I like your focus being on the well being of the horse. Though I do think kill pen buyers are nasty little varmits making profit off horses in dire straits. That still doesn't change the fact that horses need out of those bad situations. I would like to point out that just because a seller has money to buy & sell horses in 5 figure range doesn't mean the horses are well cared for. In fact some of those owners are part of the problem. They look at horses as a commodity that better produce a profit or will get shipped straight to auction without caring if that horse ends up at a kill pen. Tennessee Walkers that compete in events like the Big Lick, go through tortuous treatments in order to get the high step in the gait that wins big money. They get acid poured on their feet to cause irritation or are forced to wear heavy weights attached to hooves. Other horses get zapped with cattle prods to get them to move off the racing block super fast. So yeah, 5 figure horse doesn't = well treated or well cared for horse. Sorry Carmella, I hate to disagree with you on your channel, but that assumption leads to more poor treatment of the 5 figure horses that insanely end up at kill pens. Horses that are rescued from that type of abuse will require someone who is very patient & is not looking for a horse they can ride immediately after purchase. Some may never be rideable again depending on severity of past injuries.Even those who cannot be ridden deserve to live out their days being treated kindly & given great care. I'm sure we can agree with that.

      I just recently learned of that horrible “Big Lick”. That practice is horrific, and I saw/read that even veterinarians are paid to look the other way while the horses are put through that despicable treatment. Makes me sick!

    We adopted two mustang mares from the BLM online auction. There are also in person adoption events for the BLM mustangs. Adoption fee is 125 but if it’s auction style; it could go higher as you are bidding against other people potentially. There are thousands of mustangs that have been gathered and need homes. There are trainers that will do the basics to gentle them so they accept basic horse care. You can also find trainers that gentle them and start them under saddle if they are old enough too. I’m gentling my mustang and a friend and trainer gentled my husband’s mustang. Training fees can vary. You can also find mustangs that are gentled but still need an adopter. You need to have an approved application from the BLM to adopt. There is also adoption of mustangs through the Forestry Service. They have applications to fill out and do their adoptions differently. Mustangs are in trouble in the wild. Drought makes water and food scarce as well as dangers from all the wildfires. Mustangs come in all sizes and colors.

    • @l.e.6263
      @l.e.6263 Год назад

      Mustangs are in trouble in past 15 yrs, due to their natural habitats being stolen, sold by BLM, for housing. Their nomads, & vital Spring grazing sites have homes built on them where ppl literally ram them with trucks, shoot them while mustangs are resting on lawns. Ppl excuse this persecution stating “mustangs are pests” & “ why don’t mustangs just go away.”
      Mustangs don’t understand suburban towns that appeared in 1 season that overtook ALL their native lands. Yes, NATIVE. Mustang is now deemed an “invasive species” despite centuries spent here in USA with native Americans.
      European pioneers are invasive species. Most Mustangs in thousands , are sold for cruelest types of slaughter. Adoption program is mostly the slaughter houses having paid agreements with ppl to “adopt cheap” & later sell mustangs back to slaughter bc BLM stops monitoring adoptions after 1 yr. These are well known facts that many choose to ignore or refuse to learn. Last of hardiest mustangs are forced to live is desert areas with very little to eat., & huge fences been built to keep them from roaming, causing them to die at those fences in yrly wildfires .
      USA wilderness is shrinking fast like rest of the planet- there’s little left.

    Rescue horses are mostly the best option. Because they rescute them and try to heal them. I see a few people on RUclips who are doing a great job. I agree that you can buy a cheap horse with knowledge of their health. And that's the most important. I follow diferent people who are buying on auctions. But at the end they have to spend same money for their healt or problems. So i follow for example free Spirit equestrian, she was buying a horse, witch was sold as a gelding 16yo. But finaly it was a mare 24yo. But this mare is fantastic and doing great on the farm and the riding school. Normaly this lady knows a lot of horses, checking hoofs, teeths, she let them be ridden, to see if they are lame or have other problems. Last month she buyed a percheron mare, so a sweety. I love her.
    But it's like you said good to go to a killpen or auction with a experienced horse person or a vet. It's worth the extra cost. When i see so many horses in auctions with problems it make me sad.
    But sll depends on what You're looking for. You can't expect to buy a horse on sites like that witch will be a good showjumper or a toplevel dressagehorse. And buying a young horse or a foal is not so easy because you have to teach them all. But you can know by the breeders witch bloodlines he has.

    I can't even really dream of having a horse yet but I definitely plan on rescuing, perhaps adopting an older trail horse from a trail riding company and a yearling so that the older horse can teach the young one how to be a good trail horse while the baby comes along on trails wearing just a halter until they're five years old or so. I'd give the baby solid groundwork and let them just be a kid in between rides with the older horse leading it. Later, when the oldie has earned their pasture time and the young has gained their confidence, I would leave the old one behind or let them come along just on a lead rope if they feel like walking with no weight on their back.❤

    Dear @Equine Helper hi, I have a colt currently he is 1 year and 5 months old. I had him since he was 2-3 months old. Here in East Tennessee we don't see many owner surrenders to rescues, unless the rescue pays for the horse. Most take horse to a sale because they'd rather get $100 than take a chance on somebody making money on their $100 horse.
    So most horses we get are from sales or traders where donations have paid for the horse. In my case, I've not started fundraisers, it's other people who've contacted me asking if I'd take the horse once it's paid for.
    There are a few exceptions, but they're usually non-rideable horses, some not even pasture sound. But people get outraged when a rescue says euthanasia is the kindest option.
    Most rescues are not sanctuaries, although we all end up with a few anyway because a horse is harder to adopt out.

    You can get Mustangs through the BLM for as little as $25.00. The downside is these are untrained and haven’t been handed other than run through chutes for Veternarin checks. If you have training experience it’s not a bad way to get a horse. They also have “TIP” trained horses that have been gentled and have basic training; pick up feet, halter broke and will load in a trailer. Easier to start than a completely feral horse but would require previous experience or a professional trainer. If you’re up for a challenge and have someone to lean on when things don’t go by the book, it’s very satisfying to be able to say that you took a wild horse and trained it to ride.

    As someone living in a country where horses are slaughtered and eaten (it is pretty normal), there are no kill pens or auctions, you get so little for them in slaughterhouse and people usually do not send them to get cash but because they are old or have other problems, it sounds so weird to me that in the US those horses are sold for much more cash to ''save them from slaughter'', here you get like 150$ for an adult horse, more for foals.
    I get why this is a sensitive subject for some, horses are our pets and we love them dearly, but they are also a livestock and is eaten in many countries, I do not like that they are eaten but here they very rarely get abandoned, not cared for and such, because of how things are here, sometimes it is better for an animal that has problems that can't be fixed to go quickly and for it to go to some use than for it to be treated badly, those kill pen horses are sometimes in awful conditions (what I have seen online).
    To me as someone standing outside of how this is in the US, it sounds like a scam to get people to pay much more for the horses than they would get in a slaughterhouse, here you get like 130-150 for a horse (depending on weight), if that is the price you would get for them in slaughter in the US then someone ''saves'' them from you for 800-1000$, that is a pretty good deal!

    • @letheanlove
      @letheanlove Год назад

      It's definitely a scam preying on our sensibilities here in the US. The kill pen buyers found a way to make horse lovers here fund their buying those they're sending to slaughter! I understand a lot of people here think they're saving a horse by pulling them from a kill pen, but the reality is when you look into it that the horses they are advertising were bought and advertised for that sole purpose and never were going to be shipped to a slaughterhouse to begin with.

    "Kill pens" are a total scam. Anybody claiming to be a kill pen claims to be trying to save the horse by advertising it first at a markup. They claim they are giving the horse a chance before it goes to slaughter but they themselves say they are not part of the slaughter. Advertising a horse for $1200 and it only has 2 days left until it ships. On the high end, it is .25 per pound of horse meat and the average weight of a horse is 1000 pounds. Again the one advertising never claims to be the one selling horses to be slaughtered because that would be admitting to illegal activity ( I am speaking of the United States). They prey upon people's emotions. Giving deadlines makes people panic and make quick decisions. Often times they even post minis and ponies. It would not be worth it to ship them they do not weigh enough.

    What does it mean if the listed price of the horse is $1? Are they really selling the horse for a dollar, or does it mean inquire for the actual price?

    Seems like there are plenty of sellers that are willing to lie about a horse's age or anything else that will take away from the value. If there isn't any proof of age, then only trust a vet to get you close.

    Rescue facilities dont let new horse owners to adopt horses in my region. Because you need to know properly care and give everything so me as not very experienced horse rider, i couldnt adopt. This is good for people who already had horses,not new horse owners

      Look, i have owned horses for over 40 years. I have managed dressage, asb, and arab barns. I live on a large ranch, big barn, and can care for a horse. Expensive and alot of work, yeah, totally worth it to me. We, my veterinarian husband and i tried to adopt a horse about 10 years ago, sent videos of place and all info they required. They refused us because one cross fence that separated our pasture was barbed wire. As if a 75 acre pasture did not offer enough space for a horse not to come in contact with the fence. Asif we had no common sense, some of these afoption people are cray-cray. We live on the property and monitor our horses all day. As if!

    See I don’t mind buying off a kill buyer and the kill buyer is making money. I’d rather give them money to save one horses life that we see then let the horses ship all silently under the rug like it had been for many years and no one knows about it. Even if they are buying more horses with it. If horse owners and breeders were more caring about their horses entire future then kill buyers wouldn’t exist and they wouldn’t be giving their horses away if their weren’t so many horses to buy. So they are making a living and I’d rather them get money for a horse to have a chance at life, then to let them all ship like a dirty secret it has been all these years before. They won’t get rid of their horses for free. People buy horses all the time, is a price not worth the horses life? If they are gonna make money. Everyone needs money, but to me any horse sitting in an auction is at risk whether it’s in the kill pen or not and even if they circle back into the auction , that’s still where the kill buyers are at and most kill buyers own the auctions!!! So any horse pulled out of the auction regardless of whether it’s a kill pen horse or not, is saving a life because you don’t know when , if, or how they will end up there and we just don’t know about it! For people need to stop worrying about kill buyers and start worrying about how to end it and everyone that is helping these horses is important whether it’s a rescue, thoroughbred rehab, fixing problems on the tracks , buying horses straight out of the auctions, or purchasing from kill buyers! It’s all important

      Fighting for the laws to change, it’s all important! An auction horse is Never Safe! The auction that Moore’s gets there horses was the scariest video where after the public auction was an rotz kill pen truck that came in after everyone left and loaded up all the horses that were bought , didn’t get run through the auction or didn’t sell, that was the most sickening video I’ve ever seen because just because Moore’s doesn’t actually send them to the slaughter , rotz it’s neighbor does and that’s where half of the horses go! They have like 30 horses every like two weeks shipping and nothings more serious then that! So No horse is safe! I’m glad my horses went on Moore’s equine kill pen rescue rather then on the rotz truck because khalessi , ginger, and haviah were all lucky not to get on that truck but on a “feedlot “ truck instead meant to sell to the public rather then the silent rotz auction that picks up horses right beside them. What a lucky turn for them
