    I like the concept. You could cut the pipe for exact lengths, cut new threads and put a floor flange on both ends. Wouldn’t be adjustable but look like legit dumbbells.

    Subbed cause of this video. I built these over the weekend. Cost me ~$42 for the 12inch pair. I believe they are still worth it if you have the extra weights. I did add a piece of pvc between the pipe and weight holes for a tighter fit. Not needed, just a personal preference. The work great and no stabby stabby. Thank you for sharing.

I am not sure I would even trust red loctite on the flange side with 100+ pounds over my face! I want a one piece machined solif or welded like a LOADING PIN, which are pretty cheap but I would want 18" at least. Good Work Man!

    Do you think there’s a way to DIY Pepin/Baadass dumbbells? Is there a way to use a 1 inch drill bit and drill a metal dumbbell handle so that you can spin 1-inch acme rods in? For the end posts, we can cut the spinlock dumbbells handles and use as acme rods to screw into the handles? We can maybe weld the flanges too. Sadly, I don’t have access to a metal shop to weld or cut metal…

    How's your grip on the dumbbells using the EMT conduit wrapped in tap? How does it compare to knurling on a commercial dumbbell? I'm thinking about making some fixed weight dumbbell handles handles and wrapping the EMT conduit in anti slip tap; the kind that is used for traction on steps.

    • @DesignBuildLift
      @DesignBuildLift  2 года назад +2

      Great question! Anti slip might work. Have not tried it….not sure how it would hold up though. Some other options to consider: could add grip tape, spray truck bed liner on the EMT, or perhaps add some rubber grips on the EMT (got any used bicycle handle bar grips?)….my 2cents: whatever you do - do it on the cheap. If not done cheaply- then at a certain point it just makes more sense to buy instead of make. Thank you for supporting the channel! 🙏💪🤘

    • @Romulux
      @Romulux Год назад +1

      Considering you're going to be touching the grip surface a lot, I'd use something meant for that, like grip tape for a tennis racquet or golf club. Then you dont have the potential danger of leeching chemicals from the electrical tape, and the grip is replaceable.

    How quickly will they rust? And is there a way to prevent them from rusting like some type of paint ?

    • @DesignBuildLift
      @DesignBuildLift  2 года назад

      Rustoleum spray paint can prevent the plates from getting rusty. For nipples and other hardware, buy “galvanized” versions (not “black iron”) from your hardware store and you will never have to worry about rust.

    I know this video is old. But hopefully, I'll get a response. Here in the UK, we have 1/2" and also 3/4" even 1". Why did you use 1/2"?
    Wouldn't it be better to use a bar/tube that is a tight fit for the weight plate hole? So it doesn't move as much. I understand it will make the grip girth bigger, but isn't that why you put the pvc in there ?
    What do you think?

    • @DesignBuildLift
      @DesignBuildLift  9 месяцев назад

      Hello! More details here: diyfitnessclub.com/projects/blog-post-title-one-k9zas
      However, here is something missing from that article: not all my 1” hole plates would fit on 3/4” nipples - because most 3/4” nipples have an ACTUAL width of slightly larger than 1” ). This was a primary reason. However, you should use whatever works for you. Cheers!
      To see the demonstration of them not fitting, watch this video here: ruclips.net/video/7jr7ljGdM1Q/видео.htmlsi=V4uEPirn0mD4z8AK

    Two questions, firstly since the handle's hole are bigger than the bar in the middle significantky, does it rattle when lifting? Second, when using heavier weights, does the clamp really hold tight?

    • @DesignBuildLift
      @DesignBuildLift  Год назад +1

      Since the 1” handles fit easily on the 1/2” nipple (Fact: 1” handles will not fit on 3/4” nipples), this also means that the handles do slightly “move” while exercising (i.e., there is a “click” when conducting movements). If you have a good spring clamp the plates shouldn’t move. All this being said, obviously store bought solutions are generally going to outperform this hack in most ways. I have seen people take an extra spinlock "nut" and put it at bar's end to get a flat surface and some cover the hole by welding a piece of metal onto it or a small plate off center or a large washer off center.
      Also I've seen someone sandwich wood around a spin collar.
      All ways to try and make spinlock dumbbells have one flat end.
      All those seem to work but they aren't so pretty...

    • @DesignBuildLift
      @DesignBuildLift  2 года назад

      True - most 1” plates would fit tighter on 3/4” nipples. However, many of my plates did not fit on 3/4. Most of my York plates especially were too tight. Cap and Sports Authority plates mostly fit. Anyways- this is why I primarily chose 1/2” nipples for the video. Of course - I encourage everyone to customize these projects to best suit their needs. PVC pipe inside a metal pipe (for durability) with PVC flanges would be easier to measure to exact length and assemble and would be less costly. Not sure if PVC would withstand dropping the dumbbells without cracking.

    • @DesignBuildLift
      @DesignBuildLift  Год назад

      Thank you, Mike! 🤘💪🙏My opinion: I am not sure PVC could handle heavier increments, and I fear the weights would fall off the ends (even with PVC caps) which could be dangerous. However, this might work for lighter weight increments.

    Curious why no just do flanges on both ends

    • @DesignBuildLift
      @DesignBuildLift  Год назад +1

      Great question! You certainly can do it that way, too. However, I found that when trying to unscrew the top flange, the entire nipple would turn and the bottom flange would be the flange that gets unscrewed. In other words, turning the top flange would unscrew the bottom flange. As a result- this was not ideal for what is supposed to be a quick-change design. In my opinion, having two floor flanges works better for more “permanent” dumbbells (not “quickly adjustable” ones).
