Pedal and tone knobs are underrated tools to begin with! Especially on a Tele where the pickups are so different…I’m learning how many sounds I can actually get.

In 1987 I was using channel switching 50 watt Marshalls - one channel for clean, one for my basic OD. For solos I wanted a pedal that wold provide a subtle boost and add gain. After trying everything, I settled on the TS10. I LOVED that pedal for this particular use, even tho my electronics-guru buddy laughed at the design and said it wouldn't last. I never used it by itself, only as a boost/gain pedal for solos, so it lasted several years. Then one night it got stolen. By that time Ibanez was back to making the TS9, so I went with that. Ive NEVER been happy with it, and I've wanted a ts10 ever since. Unfortunately, one in excellent condition costs $350+ simply because Mr. Mayer was discovered to use one. They weren't made well, but there was something about those 10 series pedals!

So what gives the MT10 its special charm and tone? It would be a mistake to attribute *everything* to the use of the CA3260 BiMos dual op-amp, even though it is different internally than things like the venerable JRC4558. The clipping stage is similar to the TS-9 and SD-1, but actually shares more in common with the Timmy pedal, by using a 2+2 complement of diodes. This raises the clipping threshold, giving a little more dynamic response as well as output level. Where the TS-9 and SD-1 start shaving off bass in the clipping stage around 720-hz, the MT10 doesn't impose much of a bass rolloff until just under 270hz, providing a fuller sound, rather than the more familiar mid-hump. The tone stage, which is really a passive low/mid/high tonestack, followed by gain recovery, as opposed to the TS-9/SD-1 tone stage that actually adjusts gain of the upper mids and treble, imposes a treble rolloff just under 3.4khz; rounding off sharp edges, though not as much as the treble cut in the TS-9 and SD-1. Max gain in the clipping stage of 186x; more than the TS-9 (114x), but less than the SD-01 (221x). The inclusion of more bass and lower mids in the clipping stage makes the max gain of 186x stretch a little farther since, as I like to put it, much of the signal lives "in the basement", pushing the clipping diodes a little harder. So, overall, more dynamics in the MT10, and greater potential bandwidth, with an option to trim things back from the upper and lower extremes. All in all, likely to be a smoother-sounding overdrive. I have one or two CA3260s sitting in my parts drawer and keep meaning to make myself an MT10 clone. I'll have to install a socket for the op-amp so I can compare other chips in the same circuit. Maybe the op-amp makes a difference...and maybe not. Sometimes these things matter. A buddy brought over his Timmy pedal because he had read somewhere that it sounded better with a different (and cheaper) op-amp. We pulled the stock one, installed a socket, and spent the evening trying out 7 or 8 different kinds. Much to the surprise of this doubting Thomas, the suggested one sounded best to both our ears; likely because it couldn't reproduce high end at higher gain, making the tone warmer-sounding. You learn something new every day.
@@AskZac Well, six and a half months later, I finally finished an MT10 clone, courtesy of a PCB layout someone had posted. And wouldn't you know it, the CA3260 chips I could have sworn I had sitting in the drawer were nowhere to be found. I did have a CA3240, though, so I plugged that in the socket I installed for "chip-tasting". I'm going through the datasheets for the two different chips and I'll be damned if I could tell you how they are different, spec-wise, in any way that's relevant to guitar audio. The 3260 slews a little higher than the 3240. If I was selecting chips for a high-end pre-amp to listen to orchestral music through electrostatic speakers, maybe I'd prefer the one, but in the land of guitar and speakers that roll off above 6khz, the difference between 10V/us and 7V/us is inaudible. Internally, though, the 3260 is mostly MOSFET throughout, while the 3240 is MOSFET at the inputs and mostly bipolars the rest of the way. So how does the almost-a-clone sound? I like it. The 3-band EQ really helps tailor the sound well beyond what most Tube Screamer or Timmy workalikes can achieve. Nice and warm, and not strident. It's a keeper. I'll be trying out different op-amps over the next few days to see if the 3260 or any other particular op-amp is in some way "necessary" for the sound, or simply secondary to other aspects of the design. I'll be ordering some 3260s from China, but it'll probably be Christmas before they arrive. I'll keep you posted. For now, thanks for the inspiration.

I remember back in the 60s . One Brit cannot remember his name. But he was loyal to the vox AC30 .but he was a Fuzz nut .. He would take a sharp #2 pencil a meticulously poke holes and it's speaker to get the right fuzz and. And one of his Amps blew a tube and gave him the most ironic sound he only use that amp for certan songs after that . Much like that one number George Jones Did .when his leed blew the 84 on his fender Amp years ago ..
Zac, when you use an overdrive in front of your Deluxe or other clean amp where do you set your volume on the amp? I hear a lot of guys talk about the edge of breakup so you don’t hear the clean sound behind the overdrive sound.

I found one at a garage sale a few years back...there was a box of pedals and picked three out the box for 10 bucks each...lmao...got my MT10 original in mint condition for 10 bucks...wow. I dont use it on the floor or with my feet...its up on top of the amp and I use it with my fingers and only at home for recording. Its awesome.
Yeah...it was a score for sure!!...but I find it works EXTREMELY well for bass. The low end on that pedal is very useful for Bass as well as the sensitivity of all the EQ controls. THE BASS really snaps with this pedal and the overdrive is a really meaty Geddy Lee sound from the moving pictures era.
If you are taking suggestions on potential future pedals to review and discuss, I vote for the Boss CS-2, Boss DD-2, and an original Way Huge Aqua Puss. P.S. Love Lee Roy! Lee Roy got me into playing slide guitar!
Did an album project in my little home studio for Sheila Lawrence in the 90s and Tom Britt was the guitarist. First person I'd seen use the Nobels ODR-1. Great player of course. People want ridiculous prices for them now and even your "cheap" substitute the Karma MTN-1. Love your vids as a fellow nashvillian since 1989.
Zac great info. I had never used a Mostortion before, I took your advice and got the MTN-10. Great pedal, I especially like pulling down the bass control for cleaning up a neck pickup.

Really enjoying your videos. I have an ODR1 which I'm happy with but, also have a Nobles Fuzz, which has its uses,I'd be interested in your opinion on that.
More of a fuzzy overdrive than a fuzz. Hard to find pedal, but highly playable. If I had a session that required fuzz, this is what I'd take, it doesn't have that intermittent thing some fuzzes do, it's not noisy, the tone really works! It's not a Maestro fuzz but, try buying one of those nowadays!
I got my Nobles because of Guthrie Trapp, who I imagine was influenced by Buk (I’m assuming). I took the Nobles off my board and replaced it with a Jetter Grissom just for some variety.

I was hoping when you said someone asked TrueTone to make a copy, that Bob decided to make a hotrodded version or that one of the existing V3 overdrives was already based on it. 😂 I had an opportunity about 15 years ago to buy a Mostortion for $50 and, not realizing what it was, I passed on it.
I recently purchased used an MT-10 clone for about $135 bucks. It’s an Aeon Quantum Overdrive. A/B’d next to an original Ibanez MT-10 Mostortion a buddy of mine owns. It’s spot on. I don’t know why I waited as long as I did to acquire this little tone box. The original was only on the market for 3 years and with videos like yours Zac, maybe Ibanez will do the redesign work to make the pedal again with currently available parts.
Interesting. I have to say though that I'm incredibly happy with my extremely cheap Demon Tube Screamer. I think they're only 30 bucks or so. I haven't looked inside much, but I imagine the construction is typical pots and jacks mounted to PCB junk, but they're so cheap it would be less expensive to buy another than have it repaired if it breaks. Sometimes cheap can work, and I'm really not as rich as my fancy store-bought Walmart pants and shirts would lead you to believe!
Way back in time I had an MXR pedal that had the input and output jacks mounted to the circuit board. Not durable at all for a one pedal guy like me . Ok if you put it on a board and left it mounted.

Zac, I have a Mostortion bought brand new that has a bad switch. I really like the pedal. Who and where is XTS that I might be able to send it to so it could be re-housed? I tried to like the DRRI, but the 1 clean channel just doesn't impress. I understand that you took out the bright switch or capacitor, changed the Jensen to the Celestion V30, and other mods. I just want to play. So I chose a Super-Sonic 22W, which shares the same 6V6 output chassis, but includes a useful gain channel, a boost on the clean channel, aka Bassman, and the same wimpy clean channel as a 22W DRRI, and no midrange control. This amp is so much more flexible than a DRRI, and it is ready to go out of the box. Without your mods the DRRI is outmoded, and sounds unbalanced.

Since I'm not well versed on pedals (pretty intimidated, actually) I enjoy your simple, straightforward explanations on them.....too many times, guys use vague, goofy terms to describe sounds, which really are confusing. If I had one wish granted, I wish you had some way of showing the actual pedals and their settings when you demonstrate, so we could see where the knobs were set. I know that would be more complicated, but it would be helpful. Thanks again, man.......
I recall this entire series from Ibanez being fairly unloved. Cheaply made and ugly. Sounded ok, but volume level was weak. Especially compared to a certain pedal from Kalamazoo sold in great pyramids of plain white boxes at guitar center for around 50 bucks (this would be the rat). Gave you loads of volume and a wide range of tones. When you stepped on it, the metal button gave you a satisfying snap compared to the indifferent plastic squish from that Ibanez series. The Rat is a very different deal-- I'm aware of that. Just using it as an example of a what choices were like at the time. In 2020 there are so many three band eq overdrives out there (I like the Eagle Feather from Native Audio). Why did the rack-mount era happen? Because the majority of pedals sucked and sucked noisily. This is the golden age of pedals. And get off my lawn... thanks for the video!
That´s just because the amp isn´t close miked. You hear a mix of the acoustic sound of the telly plus the amp at very low volume recorded by just the same microphone Zac uses to record his voice.

I dont use it on the floor or with my feet...its up on top of the amp and I use it with my fingers and only at home for recording. Its awesome.

Yeah...it was a score for sure!!...but I find it works EXTREMELY well for bass. The low end on that pedal is very useful for Bass as well as the sensitivity of all the EQ controls. THE BASS really snaps with this pedal and the overdrive is a really meaty Geddy Lee sound from the moving pictures era.

Did an album project in my little home studio for Sheila Lawrence in the 90s and Tom Britt was the guitarist. First person I'd seen use the Nobels ODR-1. Great player of course. People want ridiculous prices for them now and even your "cheap" substitute the Karma MTN-1. Love your vids as a fellow nashvillian since 1989.
Zac great info. I had never used a Mostortion before, I took your advice and got the MTN-10. Great pedal, I especially like pulling down the bass control for cleaning up a neck pickup.

You can also get 10.5 gauge strings... keeps the G string as a non-wound string but gets you closer to the benefits of 11 gauges...

@@AskZac Ok - thanks much. I got the Aion kit version built today-amazing pedal, but nothing really to compare to. I do recommend it as an alternative to the original and this was by far the best kit I’ve built. Very easy to build/great instructions and I didn’t have to paint it.

More of a fuzzy overdrive than a fuzz. Hard to find pedal, but highly playable. If I had a session that required fuzz, this is what I'd take, it doesn't have that intermittent thing some fuzzes do, it's not noisy, the tone really works! It's not a Maestro fuzz but, try buying one of those nowadays!
I got my Nobles because of Guthrie Trapp, who I imagine was influenced by Buk (I’m assuming). I took the Nobles off my board and replaced it with a Jetter Grissom just for some variety.
The Jetter is a nice pedal too! Yes, I think Buk got Guthrie on board.

Love your stuff. Is that a baritone or that Fender "Six" kind of bass/guitar? I spent years trying to understand what Steven Kilbey (The Church) and Robert Smith (The Cure) were doing to get those lines and parts in that part of the late 80's early 90's. I'm Tom's exact age, so grew up so alt 80's - but I'm from Natchez, MS. I love you Nashville cats and don't have a mullet now, fwiw - or my crazy stereo rack rig (I do sometimes miss that Boogie Studio Preamp. That thing was special). Take care.

I recently purchased used an MT-10 clone for about $135 bucks. It’s an Aeon Quantum Overdrive. A/B’d next to an original Ibanez MT-10 Mostortion a buddy of mine owns. It’s spot on. I don’t know why I waited as long as I did to acquire this little tone box. The original was only on the market for 3 years and with videos like yours Zac, maybe Ibanez will do the redesign work to make the pedal again with currently available parts.

Interesting. I have to say though that I'm incredibly happy with my extremely cheap Demon Tube Screamer. I think they're only 30 bucks or so. I haven't looked inside much, but I imagine the construction is typical pots and jacks mounted to PCB junk, but they're so cheap it would be less expensive to buy another than have it repaired if it breaks. Sometimes cheap can work, and I'm really not as rich as my fancy store-bought Walmart pants and shirts would lead you to believe!

Way back in time I had an MXR pedal that had the input and output jacks mounted to the circuit board. Not durable at all for a one pedal guy like me . Ok if you put it on a board and left it mounted.

Zac, I have a Mostortion bought brand new that has a bad switch. I really like the pedal. Who and where is XTS that I might be able to send it to so it could be re-housed? Also since it is June 2024, Wampler Pedals just announced that they are making their version of the Mostortion called the Mofetta.

I tried to like the DRRI, but the 1 clean channel just doesn't impress. I understand that you took out the bright switch or capacitor, changed the Jensen to the Celestion V30, and other mods. I just want to play. So I chose a Super-Sonic 22W, which shares the same 6V6 output chassis, but includes a useful gain channel, a boost on the clean channel, aka Bassman, and the same wimpy clean channel as a 22W DRRI, and no midrange control. This amp is so much more flexible than a DRRI, and it is ready to go out of the box. Without your mods the DRRI is outmoded, and sounds unbalanced.
The Danelectro Roebuck is another affordable Mostortion "clone"
Vocal volume was a bit low. Every time you played I had to turn down the volume because it was much louder. Great videos though.
Thanks for the information, Zac. Since I'm not well versed on pedals (pretty intimidated, actually) I enjoy your simple, straightforward explanations on them.....too many times, guys use vague, goofy terms to describe sounds, which really are confusing.
If I had one wish granted, I wish you had some way of showing the actual pedals and their settings when you demonstrate, so we could see where the knobs were set. I know that would be more complicated, but it would be helpful.

I try to tell you what I am doing in this video as far as settings. I don't have a multi-cam setup
I recall this entire series from Ibanez being fairly unloved. Cheaply made and ugly. Sounded ok, but volume level was weak. Especially compared to a certain pedal from Kalamazoo sold in great pyramids of plain white boxes at guitar center for around 50 bucks (this would be the rat). Gave you loads of volume and a wide range of tones. When you stepped on it, the metal button gave you a satisfying snap compared to the indifferent plastic squish from that Ibanez series. The Rat is a very different deal-- I'm aware of that. Just using it as an example of a what choices were like at the time. In 2020 there are so many three band eq overdrives out there (I like the Eagle Feather from Native Audio). Why did the rack-mount era happen? Because the majority of pedals sucked and sucked noisily. This is the golden age of pedals. And get off my lawn... thanks for the video!

It's almost a dirty tone over a clean tone sound.
That´s just because the amp isn´t close miked. You hear a mix of the acoustic sound of the telly plus the amp at very low volume recorded by just the same microphone Zac uses to record his voice.
I heard it got its name as a twist on "More Distortion" Mostortion, but a white boy may not know that...The Japanese was trying to be street. lol
It’s just an amalgamation of “mosfet distortion” because it uses mosfet opamps.
