Conditions can be a huge factor in the Djokovic - Musetti match. If the roof is open and the wind is swirling this should really help Musetti's already masterful slices and funky shots. Also, Djokovic plays far worse in the wind. If the roof is closed due to rain this would greatly help Djokovic.

I actually think Djokovic has very poorly disguised drop shots. I also thinks he puts way too much air underneath them. Still, if Musetti was unable to put Paul away at Queens, I doubt he'll be able to dispatch far more experienced, far more complete Djokovic in his first major semi.
That being said, Alcaraz is a tennis revolutionary. He has clearly worked more than anyone else on the tour on shots historically seen as tangential or auxiliary (i.e., drop shots and lobs). His next-level drop shots are feathery, low, and very well disguised; and they die immediately upon impact with the ground. And his lobs always seem to hit the baseline no matter where he hits them from, showing he's clearly worked on the lob with the aim of developing it into a legit weapon, not as a Hail-Mary, wing-and-a-prayer, hope-it-lands-in shot. Alcaraz has turned these two throwaway shots, but particularly the lob, into weapons that instantly turn defense into offense. If players hope to beat Alcaraz, they too must get on those practice courts and put in the requisite hours needed to make these shots reliable weapons as well: give Alcaraz a taste of his own medicine (i.e., Alcaraz Alcaraz).

When players say they always give 100% effort every match, they may (or may not) be right in one way, but not in another way.
Bigger and more important matches unlock the ability to bring more of the best out of yourself. In less important matches, you consciously can try to give as much as possible but unconsciously you know the occasion isn't as big and therefore you won't be able to bring as much.
So as this "bringing 100% every match" thing is concerned: on a conscious level, it may (or may not) be true, but on an unconscious level it almost never will

One thing I was surprised wasn't mentioned: the roof, considering that tomorrow's forecast does call for rain again. Obviously that would help Nole, allowing for his more pinpoint serves that Lorenzo won't find as easy to push back. Personally I think that would also help Meddy, or more specifically playing without a roof would put the match more in Carlitos' favor.

    Hi Gill,
I think you forgot to mention a very important technical point for the Djoko vs Musetti match: the very long preparation required by the Italian to hit the balls (especially on his forehands side).
Why is this essential? Because Musetti needs time to prepare for his shots. And the player on the circuit who is best at taking time away from his opponent is Djokovic.
On clay, Musetti can eventually overcome this weakness. But on grass, and against a player who takes the ball as early as Djokovic, I don't see how the Italian can keep up.
We're likely to see him often defending very far from the baseline (to give himself some time) with beautiful slices like he did against Fritz, but as you said in the video, slices don't bother Djokovic much (especially if they are played in a defensive position).
In short, Djokovic will do what he does best: be consistent and patient behind his baseline game, take time on his opponent, hit hard and with flat-trajectories, and you'll see that Lorenzo will not be able to keep up with Novak rhythm and will make errors 90% of the time.
My prediction: Djokovic in control in 3 sets.

Novak’s spot serving will be far more effective than Fritz’s powerful but 60CM’s from the lines serves and his returns are just a completely different caliber.
He will also move forward given every chance because of the knee and it will just not give Musetti the chance to turn defense into offense.
Grass is just a whole different match up than these two on clay. Novak loves to lose the first set for some odd reason and so I’m taking Novak in 4. lol

  • @andrewhimes1923
    @andrewhimes1923 20 дней назад

Medvedev is a bit of an anomaly in today’s game. I like him. He plays big boy tennis with his power but ultimately, alcaraz just has a higher tennis IQ which is why I like Carlos today in 4 sets. In a best of 5, Alcaraz has that special ability to improvise and adapt and more than that, execute when it matters.
While the rest of the fans and commentators at SW 19 will be feasting on strawberries and cream, this kid eats pressure for breakfast. He’s uncanny and is almost unstoppable at a Grand Slam final.
Djokovic and Musetti is a fascinating matchup because of all the unknowns.
In Novak, how is his knee? Where is he at mentally after disappearing from competition since Australia?
I’ve seen signs of life this fortnight in his game. The eye of the tiger is there and most of all, the aggression is back. I’m seeing offensive, confident shot selection. He’s hitting deep and he’s hitting the corners
He has enough to dictate play against Musetti today but will he have enough to beat Alcaraz or Medvedev? This is the biggest question.
Novak has not beaten a top 10 player this year which is the longest he’s ever gone in a season without a top 10 win. He had 17 last year.
I love the story of Musetti. He’s a great kid. He’s an exceptional athlete and he can cause Novak problems.
I never saw Fritz losing to Musetti because I didn’t expect Fritz to be so lost in the execution a winning grass court strategy. Fritz’ game is built for grass. Huge serve. Big ground strokes but ultimately, way to defensive which gave Musetti second and third chances over and over again.
Novak is an exceptional defensive player but his offense is lethal and unrelenting which will ultimately shut down Musetti.
I could see Musetti taking a set as Novak adjusts to musettis new found Grass court prowess but in the end , Musetti simply does not have enough weapons
The final? I like Novak and Carlos but my major concern is Novak not being tested. This is arguably the easiest path to a grand slam final in his career
His advantage? Losing to Alcaraz last year will help him. That’s his edge. He knows what he did wrong and what it will take to beat alcaraz on grass in a GS final
I think the mistake Novak made last year was being content to play his game and expecting Alcaraz to wilt or fade under the pressure. He won’t make that mistake again.

Gill is a prime example of Dr. David Keirsey’s Rational, Reporter, Extrovert - a natural teacher.
I hope that you soon announce tennis matches on Center Court. The sport needs you!
Viewers would be fascinated by what so few announcers bring attention to. For example, Novak Djokovic would be so much more popular if the casual tennis fan routinely heard, “Novak redirects pace better than anyone in tennis” and “Novak first redirects so that he plays backhand to backhand until Federer’s lightweight and prone to breakdown backhand hits net, long, or wide or hits short, which Djokovic can hit down the line and Federer can’t defend.”
Instead, for years, we heard idiot McEnroe say, “Novak is Gumby.”
In short, tennis is dynamic chess and most tennis announcing is malpractice. Gill informs and, in so doing, entertains!

Yeah, have to agree. Really wish Gill would do women's analysis. I'd love to see his analysis on Paolini, especially since she basically came from nowhere really to end up in two back-to-back finals.
Incredible match today against Vekic, especially considering how much Vekic dominated in the first set. This really has been the wimbledon for the underdogs. Love the Paolini story, though. And I absolutely love her attitude on court.
Novak could take a lesson from her in that department. Even when she was getting blown out in the beginning today, and when things got really tight in the final set, her body language was still positive. She was still smiling after losing points. That, to me, is the heart of a champion who loves tennis. Novak never smiles on court anymore. I think that speaks volumes.

  • @aurei7775
    @aurei7775 21 день назад +1

I still don't trust Medvedev on grass, he did well so far extracting a reti. and then taking out Sinner.
So he might be coming in a little more fresh this time & Alcaraz a lot less so.
But Alcaraz just has too much variety, and i see the drop shot being lethal and even if Daniil stays with Alcaraz I feel like he will just choke and double fault like he did vs sinner on set points.
Good thing though is Idk if Alcaraz's serve will be as lethal as Sinners, so he might have a lot of exchanges, good defending and potentially wear him down and win, because' that is about as only way I see him winning. I'd like his chances a lot more on HC, not here. I just don't see anyone being able to take out Alcaraz and Sinner back to back, a feat like that I don't see happening especially on his weak surface.

Very dangerous that everyone is giving Musetti no chance basically putting Novak in the final. Not to mention a huge jinx but Did anyone learn anything from the Rybakina semi yesterday nor the numerous lopsided favorite calls that became upsets? I am a massive Novak fan and want him to win but strongly feel that Lorenzo is not a pigeon - he almost beat him numerous times, has a decent matchup and has way more belief.

When Musetti played Djokovic in RG I remember his first set and the beginning of his second set was pretty terrible. I think this semi might go to five sets, because I just don't see the current Musetti losing in straight sets. He showed a lot of heart and fight against Tommy Paul a few weeks ago and I'm not 100% convinced that Djokovic's health won't face some entropy during the match when tested by the likes of Musetti's shot variety. My heart is telling me that Meddy wins Wimbledon this year and I could see a world where Musetti pulls off the upset against Djokovic.

Straight set or max 4 set victory to Novak. I don't see it going 5. Novak's serving has been amazing this Wimbledon. And i feel for the first time this year, he is playing freely. Even at RG his coaching situation was not sorted out and he ddn't look free (mentally).
But if it does go to 5, would be amazing to watch.
