Carlos is the most exciting player on the ATP tour right now I believe. The guy is blasting youthful energy with a versatile game and tremendous athleticism.
I knew Carlos was talented, but the Wimbeldon final was special. We were watching history. I was blown away. He is the most complete player and so powerful. As Rafa said, he will be one of the greatest to ever play.
When I saw Sampras beating Stich in 1992 Wimbledon I knew, he was special, Federer beating Sampras 2001, Rafa beating Roger in 2005, Nole beating Roger in 2006 [edit 2007] Canadian Open. But I really never saw such a stellar talent before. We all might be wrong, but this kid might bring the next level.
Roger was still on the up and up in 2005. I'd say his 2008 Wimbledon loss was the big moment there. But yes, these are all iconic moments in the history of tennis
Zero doubts😊...I had the pleasure od following Roger, Rafa and Novak from their respective beginnings, and Carlos atjust 21yrs is by far better than all 3 were at that age.
Some guys here claim that Alcaraz is better at young age but the main difference is that 20 years Novak and Nadal had to compete against each other plus Federer who was in his prime. Alcaraz doesn't have the same level of competition. Federer retired, Nadal almost retired, Novak 36/37 years, Alcaraz started winning titles. Alcaraz met Casper Ruud in his first final slam. Young Djokovic didn't get the same opportunity back then The young Novak Djokovic had a much more challenging competition to defeat back in the days Everyone must take that into consideration. To me Nadal at that age was more impressive. He had to deal with prime Federer back then

I love the Maestro, but Carlos is proving to be a very different animal. He truly possesses all the shots and then some. Different surfaces do not phase him and his aggression is relentless. I think it is obvious that the kid watched a lot of Roger’s games. Net game, forehand, aggression, those little flicks, etc… he’s fed with 2 handed backhand.
Carlos not only controls his own wrist but keenly observes the opponents wrist movement. His keen observation of opponents' movement is an important asset with him

Alcaraz is a.ma.zing. But it's not just Sinner who'll challenge him from here on out. I promise you: there's a 15 year-old out there somewhere right now developing the game to challenge him. Maybe several of them. And his contemporaries in their early-20s - Shelton, Felix Auger-Aliassime - and even an "older" guy like Zverez - they'll try to raise their games to math Carlos. Maybe one or more succeeds. Part of what makes the Big 3 so amazing is that for 15 years they turned back every attempt to interrupt their dominance. There was an occasional interloper - Murray, Wawrinka, DelPo - but very very occasional. And then of course there's the possibility of injury. (Coming into 2024 Rafa had missed SIXTEEN slam tournaments because of injury.) Waaaay too early to know how it'll go w/Carlos.
I notice Djokovic attacks Federer's backhand till Federer hits a short ball or hits an error. Djokovic couldn't attack Carlos' backhand. Carlos hits it with power and accuracy. It's like Djokovic was playing a younger version of himself at Wimbledon.
That's one of the advantages of the two handed backhand. Federer would probably have won more with a two hander but when his single handed backhand was on, it was a force.
@@jollyjames30 That is exactly right. carlos is a younger version of Djokovic (returns, defense especially the sliding backhand pass), nadal (speed, explosiveness, spin and pace) , federer (net game, drop shots, attacking style) Murray (lobs, but better and footwork on grass) and his own signature touch / drop shots and volleys. except for his forehand which though incredibly powerful can be too spinny and short but its a process. he will improve as long as he is hungry, motivated and sticks with it.
Yeah Alcaraz has the highest top gear of any player we’ve seen. Mobility and shot making. Actually able to overpower the strongest players, when he is on, which is really saying a lot. But a fair question will be if his mental game will prove to hold up consistently in the big moments, especially when some of his shots aren’t working, or when a special opponent serves out of their mind and never lets up on the pressure, the way the big 3 could. Only way to do that is to win a ton of slams. Hopefully he stays healthy as well.
he showed in Wimbledon final he can recover from a small mental slip. Fought off Novak's comeback, didn't get rattled by the person in the crowd screaming mid-point which cost him a point, didn't get nervous in the tiebreak and lose the 3rd. He was smiling and enjoying himself, and went even harder in the final games of the 3rd.

The only problem is that he lacks the athleticism of Carlos. But he's already building up some strength in that sense. Carlos won Wimbledon and Sinner said nothing. Sinner may have all the skills needed to be a grandslam winner, but he is still a petulant little child within.
It honestly still baffles me that sinner is number 1.. the guy just isn't as dominant as you'd expect someone at the top of the rankings to be. Remember when fed was number 1? he was breezing through everyone AND he had such an aura around him. sinner is just... boring. He played 7 tiebreakers in halle, 6 in wimbledon, has lost twice this year to his biggest rival who is practically still a child, and always has physical issues in best of 5 sets. Carlos is more athletic and has a more varied shot selection than the big 3 were. The rarest thing that they all had was the heart and mindset to keep improving and stay at the top, it will be interesting to see if he has that. Nothing else is stopping him from winning as many grandslams as he wants. (Obviously someone else can always come along, including sinner who has taken his game to the next level as well)
Carlos plays more like Nadal with everything little extra : confidence, power, belief, guile, artistry and defence which has all the characteristics of an attack……however his style of play carries the risk of inviting injuries soon…

Alkaraz him self said that he still thinks Novak is a superman for reaching WB finals several weeks after knee surgery and not even preparing for the tournament as he usually does. @@smeagol80 there s a few reasons I can think of as to why that's so; one is two victory s in big finals in a row / or 2 from 2 meetings the ve had - both going to Alceraz Second , Djokovic s age ; anyway you look at it , for a tennis player he is in his twilight years , even for him with his legendary physical shape and few injuries Thirdly , Djokovic has had a good few very easy draws in the bigger grandslam s over recent years - helping greatly to be fresh for those finals; but on this one it didn't help him much .... Considering the competition he now has, I predicted his lean 2024 season with maybe one big win only compared to 2023 s 3 - so far it's playing out

But that did not happen mostly because of the surgery and not preparing properly. What I am trying to say, media gauge Alkaraz game on how easy he beat Novak but it would not be so easy if Novak was not injured, it would just be small win. Or maybe just barely loss, who knows. we will see what future brings, Novak will not have positive vibes from all these losses anyway.

As Tim Henman said, he was completely out of ideas. He had no idea what to do to beat Carlos. He knew baseline rallies wouldn't work so he tried rushing the net, and it just didn't work for him

Phenomenal talent and player already and it’s frightening to think he still has levels to reach in his game. Let’s hope for consistency. It’s great that after the big 3 (or 4) that we have the future of tennis in good hands with the likes of Alcaraz, Sinner, Zverev, Medvedev etc

Nahh I think Prime Nadal would beat this level of Alcaraz at Wimbledon, Prime Nadal was the guy that beat the King of Grass. But I think Prime Alcaraz (which is probably in the future) would probably beat Prime Nadal at Wimbledon. Alcaraz still isn’t at his peak so once we see that, we’ll be able to compare his prime to the Big 3.

Carlos with his nuclear forehand, bomb backhand, great serve, better net play than Rafa, best dropshot, faster than Rafa. The Carlos that showed up in the final would beat any version of Rafa in Wimbledon 8/10 times.

Let's see how consistent he is ober a long period of time. The distinctive feature of Djokovic is that he was able to replicate the same form for 15 years with a very few episodes of dip of form in between. Considering the physically power intensive rafesque style of gameplay, it will be interesting to see how consistent and dominant he is over a decade.
They said this about Sampras, Fed, Rafa and Joker. He's on a different level etc. In reality he ain't any different. He's just young and full of blissful energy. I remember watching Joker demolish Rafa in the 2011 Wimbledon final and thinking Rafa played his best tennis but he couldn't get through him. The Joker was unbeatable but he wasn't.
At 21 (and still with 2 GS to go before he turns 22), he already has more GS than Andy Murray. Crazy. I think he will be passing Boris Becker before he turns 23... if injuries allow, I predict this guy to get to Sampras by age 26, pass Federer at 29, Nadal at 30 and Djokovic at 32, assuming he has a peak, a couple of bad years and slowly winning less... Of course we are talking about 10 years from now but with 4 already and with no competition (Sinner is not even close and already older) at least for the next 3 to 5 years.... just like Federer in his first GS's... he could even make it faster.

Tennis fans are hilariously fickle. When Sinner went on a tear, starting late last year, absolutely everyone (you were probably among them) was heralding him as the next biggest thing in tennis and was calling Carlos a flop after a string of subpar performances following his win at Wimbledon. You should've seen the hate against Carlos after he got knocked out by Zverev at the AO earlier this year. Now, everything is perfectly reversed, and it's Sinner's turn to be called finished and overrated. So many plastic 'fans' who only stick with a player when they're winning.

Alcaraz hits the ball about 10mph harder than others off the ground, his serve gives him easy points (something Nadal never had apart from the lefty out wide), this serve will only improve. Roddick said Alcaraz has the best drop shot of all time, I agree. He is also the fastest, and has stamina for days (when he won the US Open he won 3 x 5 set matches on the trot and he wasn't even tired). He is a beast and I think Novak knows that there is a guy there who has the ability to beat him on any surface and beat him badly. I don't see Djokovic staying around after next year. He would be crazy not to recognize that he's had a good run but this guy is better,

I agree a new player could emerge, but I doubt it could match Alcaraz’s level, I mean we’ll see. But when Federer was playing suddenly Nadal emerged, then Djokovic and all three of them are still champions. Carlos is not a continuous player, the ATP rankings speak. He is clearly complete, but mass has a problem with hard courts and movement speed (and it shows well on grass and clay instead), and there are plenty of points to be gained in the season finale, but he is an endurance player (and in Slams that is a must).

Alcaraz is a.ma.zing. But it's not just Sinner who'll challenge him from here on out. I promise you: there's a 15 year-old out there somewhere right now developing the game to challenge him. Maybe several of them. And his contemporaries in their early-20s - Shelton, Felix Auger-Aliassime - and even an "older" guy like Zverez - they'll try to raise their games to math Carlos. Maybe one or more succeeds. Part of what makes the Big 3 so amazing is that for 15 years they turned back every attempt to interrupt their dominance. There was an occasional interloper - Murray, Wawrinka, DelPo - but very very occasional. And then of course there's the possibility of injury. (Coming into 2024 Rafa had missed SIXTEEN slam tournaments because of injury.) Waaaay too early to know how it'll go w/Carlos.

Djokovic couldn't attack Carlos' backhand. Carlos hits it with power and accuracy. It's like Djokovic was playing a younger version of himself at Wimbledon.
That's one of the advantages of the two handed backhand. Federer would probably have won more with a two hander but when his single handed backhand was on, it was a force.

@@jollyjames30 That is exactly right. carlos is a younger version of Djokovic (returns, defense especially the sliding backhand pass), nadal (speed, explosiveness, spin and pace) , federer (net game, drop shots, attacking style) Murray (lobs, but better and footwork on grass) and his own signature touch / drop shots and volleys. except for his forehand which though incredibly powerful can be too spinny and short but its a process. he will improve as long as he is hungry, motivated and sticks with it.

Yeah Alcaraz has the highest top gear of any player we’ve seen. Mobility and shot making. Actually able to overpower the strongest players, when he is on, which is really saying a lot.
But a fair question will be if his mental game will prove to hold up consistently in the big moments, especially when some of his shots aren’t working, or when a special opponent serves out of their mind and never lets up on the pressure, the way the big 3 could.
Only way to do that is to win a ton of slams. Hopefully he stays healthy as well.
he showed in Wimbledon final he can recover from a small mental slip. Fought off Novak's comeback, didn't get rattled by the person in the crowd screaming mid-point which cost him a point, didn't get nervous in the tiebreak and lose the 3rd. He was smiling and enjoying himself, and went even harder in the final games of the 3rd.

Carlos is more athletic and has a more varied shot selection than the big 3 were. The rarest thing that they all had was the heart and mindset to keep improving and stay at the top, it will be interesting to see if he has that. Nothing else is stopping him from winning as many grandslams as he wants. (Obviously someone else can always come along, including sinner who has taken his game to the next level as well)

The distinctive feature of Djokovic is that he was able to replicate the same form for 15 years with a very few episodes of dip of form in between. Considering the physically power intensive rafesque style of gameplay, it will be interesting to see how consistent and dominant he is over a decade.

Tennis fans are hilariously fickle. When Sinner went on a tear, starting late last year, absolutely everyone (you were probably among them) was heralding him as the next biggest thing in tennis and was calling Carlos a flop after a string of subpar performances following his win at Wimbledon. You should've seen the hate against Carlos after he got knocked out by Zverev at the AO earlier this year. Now, everything is perfectly reversed, and it's Sinner's turn to be called finished and overrated. So many plastic 'fans' who only stick with a player when they're winning.

Yes, Medvedev etx are very good but is Alcaraz's competition comparable to Agassi in early 90s facing sampras, Becker, Edberg, Wilander, Courier, Lendl or Murray in early 2010s facing Federer, Nadal and Djokovic.

Alcaraz hits the ball about 10mph harder than others off the ground, his serve gives him easy points (something Nadal never had apart from the lefty out wide), this serve will only improve. Roddick said Alcaraz has the best drop shot of all time, I agree. He is also the fastest, and has stamina for days (when he won the US Open he won 3 x 5 set matches on the trot and he wasn't even tired). He is a beast and I think Novak knows that there is a guy there who has the ability to beat him on any surface and beat him badly. I don't see Djokovic staying around after next year. He would be crazy not to recognize that he's had a good run but this guy is better,

Carlos is not a continuous player, the ATP rankings speak. He is clearly complete, but mass has a problem with hard courts and movement speed (and it shows well on grass and clay instead), and there are plenty of points to be gained in the season finale, but he is an endurance player (and in Slams that is a must).
i dont care what the rankings say. Carlos is the best player of 2024 so far, and only Jannik can make the opposite claim but he has to win USO next month to make it
