    Schrödinger's crab: every rounded sedimentary river stone is simultaneously a crab and not a crab until you break into it.

    That was amazing to watch! Always wondered though, what do you do with the fossils afterwards? Do you store some and sell others? Or just add to what I can only imagine is an excellent collection? Thanks for opening my eyes to this hobby!

    We used to find those near Sebastian inlet in Florida on the Atlantic side. And we found crabs and they sometimes even had their claws extended but they were coated in this what we called coquina. It's what our beaches were made of tiny shells that would collect together and form almost a cement.
    Once you saw one you could spot others they were rare but on the beach.

    You can also use a dry paintbrush to remove the excess, but it might take a lot more time than what you just did before.

    I love pouring concrete over my crabs then painstakingly picking them out again.

      Thanks! I stopped removing rock when a leg fell off, it gets pretty fragile!

    What makes the rocks break free from the surrounding matrix? I can understand how a fossil erodes less but not why a ball around it would.

    That outer shell doesn't looks like rock .. looks more like cement to me..

      calcite, limestone, sandstone etc are all natural forms of cement, when we make cement we are usually just trying to replicate the process in which these sedimentary rocks harden.
