Thank you! The Byrds do not receive enough attention - they were consistently awesome
Before I did the video I didn't realize how vastly influential they were.
Man I love these tours!! I've always had a deep interest in the 60's and 70's...
You and me both!
Agreed, these are just terrific!
Fabulous Tim!
Great vid. Liked and shared!
Right on. Thanks!
Love the videos Tim, watching from England, but I’m California dreaming!
It is a beautiful day to be a Californian. Winter is pretty great here. Cheers!
Great job, Tim! Keep it rockin'. Peace and love. Miles
Thanks. You keep rocking too. Peace.
Great job
Fascinating! It would be great to see some of the old haunts of Love at some point.
Another great video, keep `em coming, thanks Tim
Oh man. I'm looking forward to watching this after my dinner with a nice cold beer. As always, thanks Tim. Hope all is well in LA.
Beautiful day here.
@@RockessentialTim Nice one. I'm just coming back from a quick trip to the store and it's raining. God I love the Britsh weather....not! 😂
@@davenoon7378 My grandparents were from the East End. Ilford. I remember being there and thinking this is the greyest sky I've ever seen.
@@RockessentialTim I can confirm that it hasn't changed one bit.....more's the pity. I suppose it makes us appreciate the sun even more...when we do see it The thing is, I'm pretty sure if I saw the sun every day I'd still appreciate it! 😁
Very well done!!
Most excellent. Keep them coming! Suggestion; Love and The Seeds? BTW, I would pay for a tour of these locations. Consider it. Cheers
Just rewatched Echoes of the Canyon last night. Perfect timing. Man I love these videos. Oh and McGuinn’s D-45. Thanks for sharing.
Be sure to check out the Epix Laurel Canyon documentary if you haven't already.
@@jasonnewby I haven’t but you’re not the first person to tell me this. I need to get it done. It’s up on Apple TV and I think tonight is the night. Thanks man.
I loved that movie. Saw it in the theater (remember those?)
I liked it but I gotta say, I liked Echo's better. I thought The Epix doc needed to be like 5 more episodes longer.
Amazing content my friend.
Right on, thanks!
...I get on your channel and just start binging! Love the Byrds...you should consider doing a location segment on Arthur Lee/Love...thanks for the excellent content!!
Excellent as usual. Would love to see more Neil Young locations some time. All the best from Jolly Old England 🏴
My favorite group in the 60s
I have to say, I wasn't a hardcore fan until I started this video. Been listening to them A LOT over the past month or so. They were brilliant!
Great tour! I’ll definitely check out some of those spots next time I get to LA. The Byrds are my favorite American band of the ‘60s. I just finished “Time Between” by Chris Hillman. I enjoyed it and learned a lot about him, but wish he had delved deeper about what rock n roll life was like in mid - ‘60s LA. Look forward to Part 2!
I have that book on my list as I am really interested in the whole Gram Parsons chapter but its really a whole other video. I think Hillman's post Byrd career is the most interesting of all the members with the possible exception of Crosby, but Crosby's was more like a train wreck which is not as interesting but more entertaining to look at.
@@RockessentialTim Crosby has definitely been a train wreck, but recently he’s gotten himself together. I’d highly recommend you check out his 3 most recent albums (from Lighthouse to Here if You Listen, with Sky Trails potentially my favorite). His voice is still great and solid musicianship throughout. I like some of Chris Hillman’s post Burrito Brothers music, but in smaller doses. The Byrds were an perfect blend of folk, rock, country & Crosby (although I can never listen to Mind Gardens)
Another super interesting video...thanks...
Once again a brilliant interesting video. Keep them coming. 👍👍👍👍👍🇬🇧 Liverpool.
Did you catch my absolutely awful, John Lennon Liverpudlian accent near the end? Shameful.
@@RockessentialTim hahahahahahaha I did 😄 good try. Its a tough one to pull off a scouse Liverpool accent. I remember being in LA once and getting a fresh orange from a place called jamba juice (it was like a cafe franchise that sold fresh juices don't know if their still around) and the poor shop worker didn't understand me and my accent is mild. They thought I was Australian. Hahaha.
@@haydndavies2248 Ha! Its still here and they prolly still couldn't understand ya!
This was a cool story to tell. This is a band that truly changed the landscape of Rock & Roll.
Great stuff! How about a walking tour of locations involving Gram Parsons?
@@anttikaranko7032 Stay tuned for Part 2.
Ah man.can't wait for part 2. I introduced my girlfriend to your channel on Sunday. We were having a lazy morning just relaxing. She loves it. She's clearly a wise woman...I would say that though wouldn't I 😄
Part 2 is up!!!
@@RockessentialTim Tim you are a legend my man. Gonna get my dinner out of the way and sit down later this evening with a beer and enjoy part 2. Thank you as always. Peace
Top rate visuals, presentation, subject matter, script, everything! World class product. Keep it up... and thanks.
Thanks for the cool compliment!
Great picture selection and music with historic locations! Keen for part 2 -
End of the week....
best way to see L A
The Byrds are one of my favorite bands of the era.
Your channel is so interesting! I love anything from the 60’s. The music was the best. I always have wanted to see Laurel Canyon and all the places the music was made. Your channel helps me live my life through your tours and stories.
Thank you. I love anything music related and I live just a few minutes from most of the locations so its super convenient to tour.
Great video! You always do such a great job of showing us around and sharing information!
Right on. Always good to hear from you.
Great video. I love learning about important locations for bands from that era.
❤ your music related vlogs...seems a million miles away here in england during lockdown , cold , damp and grey but your vlogs make the sunshine for me , great work.!
Thanks. Were just getting to go to restaurants and gyms (not that I've ever been to one) for the first time here. But our winter weather is just awesome. I been walking a lot for the past year and doing these vids. The only thing keeping me sane!
Not only is that is the inside of the recording studio where they cut their original demos, It is also where The Doors did their original demos for Columbia. Cool!!!
The mixing board is different of course but its the same room. The building was originally built by Buster Keaton for filming.
Its also where Tenacious D did they're recordings at. Its called Arch Angel now and is owned by Neil Diamond.
Nice Nice....
ROCK ON FREAKS

Great info and Excellent as always. Looking forward to part two.
Thanks, man.
Another great episode! Love it!
Ugh! Thank you for this! The Byrds are one of my all time favorite bands! I feel like they’re so famous but yet so underrated at the same time!
The more I got into researching this video the more I felt the same way.
my favorite group thank you
Loved doing this one. As popular as they were, I think they were underrated.
Thanks for keeping rock memories relevant Tim , Great Job!
Love the studio outtakes of Mr Tambourine Man here on YT , complete with Hal Blaine and Terry conversing.
Wow. I gotta check it out, I've never heard them. Cool.

@@stevem5685 I just caught like the first 10 minutes. Awesomeness. Its interesting how Larry Knechtel didn't have his intro part down yet. What a huge part of the song it obviously is when its not there. Its also interesting how Melcher keeps referring to Roger McGuinn as "Jim". I know thats his name but it just sounds weird. I'll catch the whole thing later. Thanx!!!
It ain't what it was
Can't think of anything more to add to this episode that hasn't already been said below, but thanks again very much Tim! These videos take us (us old timers - I'm 69 now) back to a better place and time, than now. Where have all the good times gone? I just know everyone here and on your other videos are all feeling the very same nostalgic way as I. Thanks again for your incredible energy and detailed observations. They are appreciated! ss again, way up here in the rain on the 49th parallel/Vancouver BC - (Really loved the ones on David Crosby & Neil Young. Have watched them a dozen times now, enjoying your sunshine, LA, and "those days". Please keep 'em coming!
Thanks much. BTW: You live in one of my favorite cities. Nowhere in the world I'd rather see a show than at The Commodore!
Another great vidceo. Can't wait for Part 2.
Thanks. Working on some music for it now. Good times.
Really great seeing these iconic places, fabulous !
Brilliant content Tim. Keep it coming !
Thanks much. Working on part 2 now!
A miracle David Crosby still upright.
I think he'd be the first one to agree with you!
Loved your video. I am a huge Bryds fan, especially their earlier albums and I am a huge folk music fan. Listen to folk every day.
I used to go to the Troubadour when I was very young but never saw the Byrds there. Have been to the Troubadour in London, England too.
I would say Rock On but since we're talking folk music I'll just say Rock On in a quieter tone! Thanks for watching. Peace.
Excellent videos, it's amazing to finally see clubs and streets I read about growing up in Scotland, finally into my seventies I can put pictures to names.
Most of those clubs are gone or at least changed. Thank God the music sounds exactly like it did when we first heard it.
Gene Clark was the Byrds' most talented member, in my opinion.
There's a brilliant documentary about Gene Clark called 'Gene Clark, the Byrd who flew alone'. Well worth watching.
@rob lagan Thanks Rob. Not seen Echo in the canyon. Will try to find it. Cheers
Love your channel awesome vlogs!
Had to watch it again, one of my favorites. Tks for the remind on Eve of Destruction. Hadn’t thought of that in decades. Seems fitting again today. Posted the song on fb and my LinkedIn page.
Thanks, Garry.
Thanks, man, I am thoroughly diggin' this!!!!
Most excellent, Tim! I used to live a short distance east of the old World Pacific Studio...and I'm really glad to see the makeover at Columbia Square. It used to be DISMAL! Loved the upper bleacher seats at The Troub...and the bar, despite how small it is, was a GREAT place just to drink...back when I was a drinker! Looking forward to Part Deux! (edit) Oh, yeah...loved how you didn't bother to mention Terry Melcher's mom...I think this is the first time I've ever heard him talked about without someone mentioning it, as though it were part of his name...
I used to love going into the Troub and hanging out at the bar. Always ran into someone I knew. My fave restaurant is right next door, Dan Tana's. Can't wait to go back although I heard the long-time bartender Mike passed from Covid. I loved that guy.
@@RockessentialTim I used to eat at Dan Tana's a lot when I first moved to L.A. Spent one evening at a table next to James Woods, watching him try -- and fail! -- to put the make on his young date one night (cat could've used some style, I'm tellin' ya'!) and it was so off-putting, I can't watch a movie of his to the day!
@@victorhawkins3461 He must have hung out there a lot cuz we saw him there one night too doing the same thing!
You gotta do Buffalo Springfield key locations next - Hollywood Center motel next to their rehearsal space, Malibu Beach house, Whiskey, Barry Friedman house on Fountain, Richie and Steve's apt on Fountain, meeting place on Sunset in front of Barney Franks, etc etc
It is on my to do list for sure. Thanks!
Tim great history lesson here. Cheers James.
Right on, thanks!
Thankyou ,I saw the Byrd's as the opening act for Jean Luc Ponty at the Paramount theater in Seattle in '77 ,of course Crosby wasn't with them then.🐱👀💜
nor in '78 when i saw them.
@Musical Box Before them, everyone but Crosby. This was New Zealand.
@Musical Box They were advertised as The Byrds.
@Musical Box So do I.The concert was filmed for television as well here, billed as The Byrds in concert. It probably doesnt exist anymore as they reused many of the tapes.
Hi Tim been enjoying your videos for a while now. Ive watched your series on The Byrds many times actually and to day i went to my local record store and found a used copy of Preflyte album. Your right its a great album. You can actually "hear" The Byrds in several of the songs. Thanks again Tim.
I tend to play the crap out of whomever I'm doing a piece on when I'm doing the piece and right now I'm actually working on a vid about an ex-Byrd.

Wonderful! SO much great information, looking forward to Pt.II. Thanks, love your tours! ✌🏼Dale/MN (I’ve “run into” both Dylan & Prince, but not with cars!)
But have you run into Westerberg?
Absolutely! He lives a couple miles away and continues to be a criminally underrated songwriter. ‘Mats forever!
@@vandannadale2689 He was a total underground Rockstar here in LA in the late 80's/early 90's and on a totally stupid level I love that they had an album called "Tim".
Fantastic insights!
thank you Roger for that 12 string Rick
Great work as always.
Right on. Thank you!
The screening of A Hard Days Night also set the course for McGuinn to adopt the 12-String Rickenbacker, without which the Byrds would be unimaginable.
Right on.
@@RockessentialTim I LOVE these videos, thank you!
@@paulcarpenter999 They are my pleasure. A total blast to make.
Thanks - that was fun. I was lucky to see the original lineup 4 times before Crosby was gone. Not a great live act unfortunately, but their LPs all the way thru Notorious Byrd Bros. Stand with anyone’s. Anyone’s.
I often wondered what it would have been like to see them live. As I re-listened to their songs when making this video, I was struck with the musicianship throughout the band. Hillman in particular was such an underrated player.
Tim, I watched your video on Haight Ashbury. You missed Jimi Hendricks's house, which is a pet supply store. Jiminy didn't spend much time there, but Janis Joplin rented it for awhile from Jimi. I went there, and the owner showed me around. Real cool!
Thanks, I'll make sure to check it out next time I'm up there!
Seriously good stuff. Who knew that used to be Ciro’s or all that went on there? You’re really good at this. Any relation to Rick Beato?!
Rick? Only our hairdresser knows for sure....
Really enjoy your videos man. The Doors are my favorite group of all time. Have you ever done a video on Henry Diltz? He’s an amazing man
I have never met him but I would love to. I find it fascinating how his talent transferred so seamlessly from music to photography. In a couple weeks I plan on going to the Morrison Hotel Art Gallery here in LA and getting an up close and personal look at his work.
I won't do something silly like saying FIRST!
I'll say it. You are FIRST! LOL!
Love your videos!!! Do u think u could do one on the mamas and papas ???
It is a def possibility. Thanks!
You could have mentioned Terry’s place on Cielo Dr. (later the infamous Manson murder scene) as they did pop in and out from time to time for various reasons.
You are correct sir! I did however mention them in a vid I did about Trent Reznor making The Downward Spiral at Cielo Dr. Went up there with my camera and it is still a very weird place.
maybe you will do a video on the Nelsons and on Rick Nelson
Wasn’t Terry Melcher Doris Days son? Wasn’t that Candace Bergen in pic w/him? Cero’s? Just so interesting to go back down Memory Lane w/you Tim!
Yup, he was her son. Candice Bergen was his longtime girlfriend and was living with him when they left Ceilo Drive right before the Manson murders. Nice hearing from you!
@@RockessentialTim Yes, Tim, Manson connection was i my recall but not Melcher & Bergen. Wasn’t it T.M. who was Mansons intended target on Cielo? It’s evident you work hard on these videos. Much appreciated!
@@blakesleyk.7166 They say it was Melcher who he had a grudge against. They play that little scene out in "Once Upon A Time In Hollywood".
Check out Marty Stuart playing with Roger and one other Byrd
Hey Tim, I'm looking at possibly of buying a home in the Kirkwood section. One big question,,,,, are there still a lot of musicians and bands in that neighborhood playing music throughout the day and evening?
I don't frequent it too often but its the same with any neighborhood. There are good parts and not so good parts. If you're right on Kirkwood or Ridpath it might be a little louder for the traffic and the houses tend to be close together on those streets.
More interesting background focusing on the locations where important early developments occurred for one of our best bands ever, The Byrds. A couple of quibbles...First, your story of how the band came to record "Mr. Tambourine Man" is not consistent with what I've read and heard elsewhere. (I don't know if Jim Dickson's account is presented as he said it, but I question the accuracy of his story.) My understanding--which I think includes an account from McGuinn and others who are knowledgeable--is that McGuinn liked the song and began to convert it to a rock arrangement, but Crosby didn't like it and took some convincing. Second, you refer to Roger McGuinn a few times, then later toss out quickly that he was known as Jim McGuinn when they recorded their first material. I would have preferred you to explain from the start that Jim McGuinn was the name he used until 1967 when he changed his first name to Roger, as suggested by a leader of Subud spiritual group he had become part of. So he wasn't "Roger McGuinn" until the recording of their fourth album, "Younger Than Yesterday".
I think it's fair to call McGuinn the leader of The Byrds, but by the time he was the only original member left, I think it was dishonorable of him to continue using the Byrds name and the music they produced doesn't compare at all well with that of the original members, at least until Chris Hillman finally split. I haven't heard your part 2 yet, so you may cover some of this in that second part of the history.
I have Preflight
Take 2 asprin and drink plenty of fluids and you should be alright.
...I kid...
loVE ShE HAS A WAY FROM PREFLIGHT
I don't no what gave our guide the idea that you could not hear playbacks of
what you were recording until we had Protools. Of course you could hear playbacks
in the "old days!. Folks were recording on tape so all you had to do was rewind and
press play.So what gave you the idea that we could not do playbacks until we had
Protools? Please tell me about this, if you will.
Normally bands didn't have the funds to rehearse in a recording studio like The Byrds did. There were no cassette tapes, only possibly reel to reel. With a DAW or Protools you can playback in your bedroom. Its relatively cheap.
I grew up in Southern Ca. I have been to Laurel Canyon a couple of times and all over Hollyweird. It wasn't that great. As I look at it now it looks very rundown. The street is way to narrow and is in very bad condition. The asphalt is crumbling and the side of the road is terrible. Weeds all over and crumbling. You still can't see the homes very well but even the ones you can see are in disrepair. I have never been back. It's a dump.
Wow, so kind of you to grace us with your clever insights into the aesthetics of present day Laurel Canyon. Thanks Kevin!
Shouldn't that be The Chad Mitchell Quartet ?
Ha! Obviously McGuinn didn't have a say in that, right?
The Byrds initially were a Beatle copy. They all had beatle haircuts on their first release. This allows me to say that they were no higher than the Monkey's on the "real music" totem pole
Surely you jest. Ignore the hair and listen to the music.
Nobody was more in love with "Mr. Tambouree man" than I was when it first came out. But now with some experience under my belt and some knowledge beyond what the MSM will tell you, I am quite aware of the Deep State psyop the Hippy Movement was (led by the music) as was the Integration Movement ( look at where integration is taking us with all the reverse racism, the loss of family values especially in the black community and the outright continued hate on full display encouraged by the MSM which further outs it as a psyop)@@margaretross9150
The Wrecking Crew were better musicians... the truth can be painful, but in this case it is not a derogatory statement, as the Wrecking Crew were among the greatest.
I know Crosby is a talented guy, but he almost never wrote any of the hits, was not a great guitarist, and was not the primary lead singer. In all seriousness, what was so great about him (this is a serious question, not a negative comment towards Crosby), please save the he was so talented speeches and explain what he could do that no other back up singer could.
This is a serious answer, but I think if you listen to the Byrds harmonies and CSNY,'s you need go no farther than your ears. I'm not qualified to explain why it was right--in my opinion it just was. Could someone else have done it?--Perhaps but that's a question I find just too esoteric to tackle.
Another excellent vid! Keep ‘‘em coming! Thank you!
