Be sure to buy the Garmin insurance. It protects you from the cost of your rescue. Homemade Wonderlust was sure glad when she found out she had signed up for it 5 years earlier. As she used the SOS and the insurance covered most of her cost of rescue.
Close experience too , me and some friends got stranded up in the mountains in deep snow and there was one single bar of service on my phone and if there wasnt i dont really know what we wouldve done ..
Technically (...that was an Xkcd reference), aluminum has a lower density than titanium, therefore items which can't be made thinner without compromising the structural integrity, such as eating utensils, aluminum is lighter than titanium.

I've been contemplating that exact same device! I live in Montana and outside of town there's no service at all.
It's awesome, and totally could save your life.
