I've heard numerous renditions of this piece of music. This one is really quite awful. The piece is over-rehearsed and is way too mechanical. The timing is too precise. For all the young woman's gyrations, she completely lacks emotions.
The guitarist looks like he would rather be somewhere else. He too is over-rehearsed. The timing between them is so exact that there is no dynamics at all that this piece of music is famous and popular for. The energy is lackluster and feels very lifeless.
The only saving grace might be, is that the instruments are fairly well tuned. There is just no energy because it lacks creativity, life and most of all, love. Musicians either hate or love this piece of music for its complexity and demanding of undivided attention that it requires. By over-rehearsing and practicing it to what they feel is perfect, they took the soul and life out of the song. It still has a voice, but its breath of life is gone.
I have seen other musicians really bring this piece to life. They have energy, dynamic energy. The musicians communicate with each other. I've seen versions where musicians made minor mistakes but kept on playing. If one made a mistake, the other stepped in to offer support by adding or reducing the amount of energy they brought in.
These 2 remain on a constant playing level. The energy level doesn't change. Neither musician supports the other. They are only interested in playing the music without making mistakes. This over-rehearsed method zaps the life and destroys it in a piece of music like this one. There is no obvious dynamics between the 2 musicians and neither of them even bothers to look at the other. Because of this lack of interaction, the song piece just stagnates and dies.
True musicians have a life of their own. Most musicians instinctively interact with their fellow musicians when playing together. There is a quiet interaction between them and a language that they speak to one another without ever saying a word. Most of the true musicians play out of instinct and connection to their music. Musicians that play together do so instinctively as well as with talent and skill. Musicians know how to interact with each other without saying a word. A simple smile or look of acknowledgement is all the direction that they need in this kind and type of music. These 2 don't have that.

Fantastic, truly fantastic. Makes the hairs on the neck rise. Musicians are accomplished masters of their craft, superb. The mandolin is a much underrated instrument.

I agree about the underrated status of the mandolin - the lute and to a lesser extent the lute. I am Italian American so the mandolin was very respected.
A bit off point but I think l the poor theremin is music's stepchild.

I've been coming back to this exact video for nearly 6 years now. It still gets stuck in my head, and unlike other songs where just the catchy bit gets stuck - some of my moods make me replay the intro, sometimes it's the action packed bits, or even just the guitar parts.
I found this video in a strange and maybe funny way (I thought Chen looked like someone in the thumbnail) and I'm so glad that I had that goofy joke to myself because now I get to enjoy random parts of my life and experiences set to the score of Czardas.
Funny how we can be, and what can influence us.
