I have a bunch of these cheap soft boxes, didn’t even think of lighting from above that way for product b-roll. Thanks for the tips! Will make use of this in my next camera video.
Thanks Max! Overhead/side lighting with bounce makes up for 98% of my b-roll. Easy to rig up too!
Caleb = the Macgyver of budget video production. Awesome solutions!!
Thank you Rene!
The best 6:19 I've spent on RUclips today. Really dope tip and thank you Kaleb.
Thanks Clutch!
10/10 on how useful this video is, I couldn't appreciate it more bro thank you!
This is simply the answer that I'm looking for LOL. I'm a newbie and been experimenting but can't get the correct info about lighting. Thanks for this!
This couldn't be better timed. A friend of mine is just starting to get into this and we've been pulling together a basic kit for him this week. Thanks for the tips, Caleb!
people who understand proper lighting are so damn impressive.
As I am new in this field and I have low budget, this video was super useful to get some ideas (even 6 years down in the line). Funny enough, one of the family member just gave me a similar softbox with remote control operated LED bulb and was wondering how can I adopt it for b-roll stuff.
Great vid for some quick tips right before i gotta do some product shots this morning, thanks!
Your stuff is golden
Thanks Sharon!!!
i like this calm explanation
Caleb, a video on lighting for whiteboard setups please! That would be a life saver.
Thanks for the tips !
Thank you so much for the tip!!
I ordered one of these with a stand off eBay on your rec Caleb, it's excellent! Just love your videos.
Very useful explanation! To the point, not too wild and absolutely not boring. Keep it up!
Thank you. Massive help. Just getting into product videography so this is just what I needed. Great channel. Hope you're keeping healthy.
Great informative video as usual! Just did my first product shoot about 2 weeks ago and this is really helping out with some issues I was having with my improvised ligthing. Placed an order for both items using your links.
Hey could you share your journey after 6 years!
Unbelievable! Thank you so much you make what seems complicated easy! And cheap!
Perfect!
You are by far the best on product review / tips . Love this channel !
Got my last part, the bulb, came about an hour ago and and I've already taken a rough few pics as I need to go to work soon. And let me tell you Caleb, this is the most amazing setup you've give us beginners/newbs. It is absolutely amazing. Even on the quick shots I've already done, I can see the potential. With a good camera, oh man ... I'm in heaven. This weekend I'll have a some better quality shots to use on my own website. The only thing I regret, is that I live in Japan and wasn't able to use your links. Anyway, many, many thanks from a big fan!! This is truly an epic DIY idea!!
Wonderful info Caleb. I like seeing the multiple setups you came up with for lighting the object(s).
Wow really great video! Really enjoyed the different angles and the light was awesome!
Thank you so much Pike! I knew about the bulb, but I didn't know it would work! Great job!
So simple, clean and affordable. Thank you for this tutorial and links.
Totally excellent tutorial!
The light is gorgeous - startlingly from such an inexpensive setup.
A great video for budget filmmakers!! Thank you!
Simple and AWESOME. Everything I have learnt I did from you. Just a big thank you.
I would love to see a video about alternative uses of a ring light
This is awesome, Caleb! Thank you. I actually already have the soft box shown, so as you like to put it, I'm "off to the races!"
thanks for great idea
Hey!
Do you think it's possible to have two ot thees setup's, one on each side. so it becomes a big softbox? Right now i am shooting small products in a square box with lights on the side. I just would like to replace itso i can shoot bigger items also. But maybe i should have both in the end! what you think?
Great vid by the way!
This is awesome! I’m going to try it for my jewelry photography. Which has been the toughest thing for me to figure out.
Hi there I just wanted to ask if you had much sucess with your set up? I too struggle with the jewelry shots in my tent. Thankyou, Michael :)
Great tutorial, simple and effective, builds on the LED video. Always stayed away from the corn cob lights but it seems they've improved the chips since both the videos with them you've posted have great looking light.
The light set up I have been looking for. Thanks.
love all of your videos man! thank you
You are on a roll, Caleb! Thanks!
Thank you Sir TechLine!
😄 I have a ton of boxes labeled fr organization too! It's the main thing I've learned from Casey 😅
Awesome tips Caleb!
Thank you.
Your videos help a lot in the field and studio. For instance, your video on how to light people with glasses helps me a lot! Keep making videos like these, you inspire us to think frugally creative! Yesterday I tried a shot with a 24W LED bulb fitted on my bedside reading lamp. I used two tissue papers as diffuser, and rubber band to hold them to the head of the lamp. This afternoon I tried another shot with 2 LED 23W bulbs for lighting. They aren't professional, but they did the job pretty well, and they cost me just about $15-20 in Indian money.
Since you make documentaries as well, could you please share with us about how you light your subjects while you're interviewing them at their place. How would you suggest to go about it as a one man documentary filmmaker?
This is what I was waiting for..!! Great video :)
Thanks for the solid content you produce. Just ordered the softbox via your link:)
Good stuff Caleb love the labeled bins lol
Ha! Thanks Jay!
This is a great video. The results really speak for themselves on this one!
Thank you Sam!
Really great tips that have amazing results considering what you're working with, thanks!

this was soooo helpful. thanks
I am trying to work on a setup for my videos. I have very limited space in my bedroom, so I have to take things down after filming. But this setup for B-roll looks great!
Would work well in tight spaces. I also love how that light doubles as a key for talking head shots!
@@dslrvideoshooter Ji guys is this ok for my jewelry shots if i put the pieces on a white ground? I struggle with my tent and get frustrated with it
These are some awesome tips!!
Great video Caleb! Thanks for the tips :)
Anamazing on how to film products, thanks for sharing these tips. What were the focal lengths, and ISO on the lens? Thanks again for all your research and tutorials.
I've been doing it wrong all along..thanks Caleb, you're a genius
Thanks so much your video is really awesome!!
Thank this helped immensely, currently doing product shots for a wallet company and needed the help thank you 👌🏻👌🏻
Fantastic recommendation!
Loving the content man. I'm sure you're asked all the time, but what camera are you using to film with?
For my main talking head setup, I use the G85 and for the broll/table top setup I use my old trusty GH4.
Oh hey, I know you!
Caleb always great tips in a budget. bravo ;)
Thanks Hybrid!
Great video , thanks for the info
Thank you so much for this video! So helpful!
Awesome tip.
Awesome video, pretty amazing and cheap setup!
Caleb, thanks a lot!!!)))
Hey Caleb! Love your videos! I’ve been binge watching a ton.
I was interested in creating a similar setup as you mention in this video, but noticed the links to the products you talked about are no longer valid.
Do you have the names or new links of the softbox diffuser and lightbulb you used? Thanks so much!!
another great video. you are my number one go to guy for content re: media/video content.
Great video! Thanks!
Oooo! So helpful. Thank you. This set up will be great for shooting my miniatures. Thanks again for the tutorials that you do they have helped me greatly. n_n
Great Information. Thank you for sharing!
You make me want so many things.
This video rocks! going to be doing something similar tomorrow, thank you :)
Awesome...
You are really cool and useful.
Thanks.
Great advice!
do you have a video about not getting your light reflecting in your glasses! I need that in my life
As usual, nice and useful ;)
awesome, might have to give this a shot! :D
Let's go cubs! lol good video man!
Heck yeah!
Would you recommend something like this for a budget set up for filming a video like this were a person is sitting in front of a camera and talking?
excellent video. I'm going to share on Twitter
Oh yeah!
Could you please do a video that explains how to shoot screens in a video? like phone or computer screens? I have a tech RUclips channel and I'm having a hard time to make good quality videos when I'm showing my phone screen or PC screen in camera.
DSLR Video Shooter
Are you going to do any videos on steadicams anytime soon?
Great content by the way! Have been a follower for MONTHS!
I don't know why I called you DSLR Video Shooter, when I know your name is Caleb LOL! I actually go back and watch your older videos all the time whenever I can!
How do you get a such dark background ?
Because I tried it but even if my background is black, on the video we clearly see the black background lighten up and doesn’t create this sort of infinite black background.
I have the same softbox, the same LED light bulb, and I use either my iPhone 7 and my Lumix G85 to film, so I tried different settings but I can't darken the background without darkening the object too so we don't see the object anymore.
I really would like to have this sort of infinite black in the background.
Any tips ?
If I had to guess, I'd say the black background is much further from the light source than it appears and thus the light isn't bouncing off of it as much. From my experience, you only get that true infinite black when there's enough space for the light to naturally fall off and not bounce off anything.
Ordered with your links... Soft box was sold out so I got a different company one... Same stuff
isnt the farther away your light source the softer the light, not the closer your light source the
Thanks for sharing
Looks gorgeous but are you using a grey or a black backdrop? In the beginning of the video it's grey but by the time you're ready to shoot it's black. Is this because the room is completely dark? I tried that but I'm still getting a grey backdrop.
your videos are always amazing, I really like it that you put your focus on all the affordable stuff. Oh btw, that vintage camera reminded me of that 8mm Film camera my dad used to film my first steps back in the... well... sixties ;-)
Thanks Joker! If you can, you should get your hands on that camera for a reason I'll be talking about in an upcoming video ;-)
Caleb, you can´t imagine how much I´d love to do that... however this gear is loooong gone.. sorry. Back in these days people really had to *cut* their films and sound wasn´t really an issue at all ;-)
That is nice light! And very easy to achieve! Have you done any green screen lighting?
This, combined with a Yongnuo 360 is golden for B-Roll ... oh ... and don't forget to vape :P
lol I would love to see you impersonating other tubers 😅 You're so calm and that is the Polar opposite of most people on here. Hell, even my wife and I amp up our personalities on our channel. (p.s. great video as usual)
Thank you !!!!
Close light being soft light is counter intuitive. Why is it not the other way around?
Its wrong. The inverse square law dictates that, the further away a light is the softer it gets.
I would find this even more useful if you would actually use all of this on a real production (short, music video or wathever), because there changes everything! Great video :)
Thanks Remco!
Would this work for video product reviews ? Like figurines, statues etc..
Wow
Any tips for using just metal work lights for a talking head setup. You can get them under $10 each. I use 3 of them and a 5 in 1 but i can't seem to get it to look real nice. Would like to see what you could do with this kind of setup?
Thanks :D
Very helpful! Does anyone know of a budget friendly light stand that goes well with this set up? Cheers
